Preuss is a 25yr old ready-to-go first string ruckman with multiple clubs interested and two years to go on his contract. Clubs want him, they'll have to pay up and make it appealing to us. If we want to become more ruthless as Goodwin said, then it can start at trade week.

Swap and carry the contract to another ready-made player instead. All sounds familiar. It is the coach's easy way out of the inability to develop, develop and develop. In Goodwin's case, just to develop and provide a purpose.

    Giants and Swans interested so far but i expect that to grow quite a bit. definitely a few clubs that would love him 

    I would be setting the price high and making clubs pay up if they'd like him. he's contracted

    Apart from GWS those other clubs you named have much more reliable options and don't need to desperately gamble on Preuss. There's no way that 2 years of doing stuff all at Melbourne has suddenly increased his value.

    He's been behind Goldstein and Gawn so it's not surprisng he hasn't played many games.  Maybe he'll go to Collingwood next and get his Ph.D in Ruck Craft under Grundy before he gets a real job.

    As someone else posted, it only takes 2 interested clubs for an auction.  I think we should be able to get something valuable back.

    It doesn't set a precedent as there are few other positions in AFL where there is only room for one player.

    Imagine being the reserve goalkeeper for an EPL team. Other than the money it would be soul destroying.

    Makes me think of Sergio Romero, was happy earning £95,000 a week at Manchester United and playing sporadically, but now there is a younger Reserve keeper and Sergio wants to leave. Much Like Preuss/LJ situation but without the swimming pool full of money ala Uncle Scrooge

    According to the club release /preuss-joins-melbourne  'Preuss will wear the red and blue until at least the end of 2021'.

    So he has one year left on his contract.

    Whatever the contract, we don't have the leverage some are suggesting.  We said we are open to enquiries for him.  So now he looks around will choose a club and we will have to deal with that club.

    I dont think it changes anything. Hes contracted for 2 more years. if we dont get want we want he stays and we can still trade him next year when hell still be in contract. Its not like Ben Brown who is out of contract. Melb hold all the aces. All depends on how RUTHLESS we want to be.

    The point I was making was if we traded McDonald to North for Polec, both are on good coin, but we'd get North to pay the fee or financial gap above McDonald's contract (there must be an accounting term for this?).

    I only did accounting up to year 12. But for Tom McDonald , I would use the terms “depreciation “ and “write-off”.  I’m hoping he can have a big preseason and come back but I’m also pragmatic and maybe we can get some trade value for him whilst he’s still worth something.

    There's actually a debate in the big money sports of the EPL and similar as to whether you recognize player transfer values as revenue. The consensus seems to be that they are intangible assets and are therefore not brought onto the balance sheet other than in the form of cash at bank upon purchase and disposal. The other argument is that you treat it like trading stock

    If we were required to write MFC player values to market each year I wonder if we went up or down in 2020?

    Doesn't really matter if he was behind Polly Farmer and Dean Cox too, the lack of games hurts his value.

    Trade week isn't an auction. Preuss seems keen to leave. We seem happy to get something for him otherwise we would've told him he's staying. So he'll find a club and we'll haggle over his value. The bar is being set very high when I imagine the club has a more realistic target on what they want back.

    2. Development - he knew he didn't have the fitness or ruck craft to be an effective starter 2 years ago. He had to build his tank and work on his tap work. 2 years as Gawn's apprentice gives him a much better chance to lockdown a starting job.

    I think we sold part of an idea of a two ruckman system, plus there was a lot of concern about our lack of depth with ruckman should Gawn go down. Perhaps we also sold the idea that he would be our future. 

    Either way I’d personally say that his value has increased rather than decreased. He’d walk into at least three clubs as their number one ruck.

    His time at the club whilst not overly productive, was a resounding success, he leaves as a much more developed player plus possibly netting us a player swap/ 3 way trade or 2nd round draft selection.

    Or straight swap for J. Cameron. ??????????????????????????????

    agree... but it will be the highest money/term bid from Preuss' viewpoint

    The draft pick will be a long way down in the negotiations

    It probably also depends on what North are willing to pay to get at least a bit of his wage off their books.

    He came because we discussed playing two rucks.

    We got him because we had a bumper 2018 and needed cover in 2019 in case Gawn went down. Unfortunately he has been injured, or coming back from injury most of the times we needed him. 

    Now we have Jackson has proved capable of holding his own, and we've probably decided that we'd rather play him as first ruck (for development) than Preuss, then Preuss became expendable.

      A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

      Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

      Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset.     • REPORT: Richmond

      The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

      The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace.They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
