All of a sudden we don’t need back up for Gawn (who has needed time off for injuries and rest just about every year). Jackson way too young and inexperienced, Bradtke not even close. A late first rounder/early second which we could onsell for Gunston? Purpose was to exit Tyson so match committee didnt select him on the wing! 1 Quote

Little Goffy 14,970 Posted September 24, 2020 Posted September 24, 2020 I guess the issue with Preuss is that he is only a ruckman and isn't going to be able to contribute much or get a lot of games as a forward target. Jackson looks like a credible future option, with chop out support available even if Gawn needs weeks off while Jackson is still young. Given how much we need a big body up forward it would be a perfect result for all involved if Preuss moved to somewhere that needs a ruckman only, and in the backswing Melbourne can find a physical forward/ruck who absolutely does not need to be a star, just has to fill the role. A ruckman who isn't a star can't afford to be sentimental and we need to be able to offer maximum opportunity to any forward/ruck who can deliver what we need. Quote

He and Gawn would have been a nighmare match up. Hard to find rucks who kick goals but Max resting forward with another ruckman who can cover the ground and complete is a tactic worth trying. I remeber the panic opposition Clubs went into when Sandilands was plonked forward. Height in the forward 30 metres frome goals makes backs nervous. Kinda disappointing that the best contested mark ruckman in the game, doesnt play at least a little more forward for a team that needs a little better talent forward of centre, no? He had two shots at goal this year. 2018 he had 25. Goodwin has his plan A, where weed and others take the ruck in forward 50 and blah blah blah. But heck wouldn't it be great to rattle a few opposition teams from time to time with a change in tactics. 1 Quote

If TMac can't be traded I suspect we will use him as a bullocking ruckman with Gawn forward for a while. Worth trying... I thought that was what we were doing when T Mac was recalled this season but Simon knew better Quote

Dr.D 1,771 Posted September 24, 2020 Posted September 24, 2020 it sounds simple but guys that can't kick shouldn't be in the forward line. Quote

Demons3031 375 Posted September 24, 2020 Posted September 24, 2020 FWIW My preference would be to keep Preuss and use him as first ruck. Gawn has a lot to offer in both attack and defence - depending on how the game is going. He has saved us with his marking interceptions on many occasions and is so hard for the Opposition to match up on in the forward line ....and he can take on ruck duties in the forward line as Weeds and T Mac do now. I feel we leave ourselves very exposed if Gawn gets injured seriously. But its not just the insurance factor - I feel we need to instill more fear and frustration into Oppositions and make them sweat more. As others have suggested, Gawn's great ruck work is often not capitalised on so it wouldn't necessarily be a great loss in that department ...though we could always swing him back there during a game if we felt it needed that. I feel we don't really create that fear in Opposition' where they panic - have seen it only rare occasions such as Geelong in the 2018 final. Gawn as a weapon in defence and attack might make us more unpredictable too and create confusion in Opposition decision making. I think that partly explains why every now and then I go back and replay those last half goals in that 2018 final! :) Quote
Yze_13 310 Posted September 24, 2020 Posted September 24, 2020 I’d trade Preuss for a second round pick that we could then package with other picks for the Dogs’ pick 8. I’d then go and knock on Peter Wright’s door. 1 Quote
Lil_red_fire_engine 11,386 Posted September 24, 2020 Posted September 24, 2020 I would look at Preuss to GWS for Riccardi or Himmelberg, preferably Riccardi. There is no reason to give him up unless we get something we value. 2 1 Quote
ProperDee 1,698 Posted September 24, 2020 Posted September 24, 2020 Preuss to GWS for a meat tray and a carton of stubbies is closer to the mark. 1 1 Quote

We paid good cash for Preuss, it's salary better used somewhere else. Quote

Preuss is a valuable commodity now and there should be no fire sale. Caldwell is rated higher and a bit more of an inside player, so we'd have to throw something else in. I thought O'Halloran would be a more realist straight swap, and offers a bit more speed (less polish) and is pretty tough. He could easily sit in an inside/outside role, not sure if he could be a pure wingman though. Calwell is probably more likely to end up as an inside mid, which we've got heaps of, he'd probably go for a first rounder. Plus O'Halloran is managed by Trac's brother, and I'm guessing but there's every chance he could be managing Trac when he's contract comes around in 2 years, so be nice to start working with him early. 1 Quote

Yes, they need a ruckman but they arent that desperare. they can always draft a ready made ruck anyway 1 Quote

Little Richard 6,265 Posted September 25, 2020 Posted September 25, 2020 I don't think this is too dissimilar to when Nankervis was traded from Sydney to Richmond. He was a ready made ruck who just wasn't getting the opportunities. He went for a third rounder, so if we ended up with a second rounder for Preuss we'd be doing very well. Quote
adonski 13,278 Posted September 25, 2020 Posted September 25, 2020 Kelly & a future second for Preuss, pick 23 & a future first Then it’s Kelly, pick 23 & a future first versus Salem and himself!!! 2 Quote
Axis of Bob 11,945 Posted September 25, 2020 Posted September 25, 2020 The difference here from many of the other ruck trades is that Preuss has 2 years of contract remaining. This means that we have full control, unlike say Nankervis or similar. We have leverage here because it's not like we are desperate to get rid of him and he's contracted. We could easily have him on the list for another year and do it next year. We hold the whip hand and it wouldn't surprise me if we got a pretty decent deal for him. He play 2 games in the ruck this year. One where he was very competitive with Grundy and the other where he smashed English. He's an AFL quality ruck who we have in contract. A team that needs a first ruck would need to tempt us into trading him. 11 1 Quote
rjay 25,424 Posted September 25, 2020 Posted September 25, 2020 If we can get a good deal for Preuss I would take it. I'm not convinced in him as a good ruck option anyway...nor of his trade value. Surprising many on here seem to overvalue him substantially as the 2nd coming of Grundy or the like. ...but if someone is willing to pay the price we can use the pick or trade for a player we need. Then look to picking up a back up ruck from the state leagues. 1 Quote
