I think we should get Michael Voss  in as our midfield coach If he is available. Surely he could lift our mids a level or two.

Tracs improvement may well be the benchmark for players to aim but that is more on an individual level.

Voss would bring a new dynamic to the group which would be a great result IMO.

Also Oliver’s hero growing up. But I think he has said he’ll stay at Port.

I would LOVE Hodge!

    • Hi Tommy, any truth to the Oliver to Carlton rumours? As a Melbourne supporter it’s a scary prospect!

I agree that Brendan Mc Cartney was instrumental in Clarries last couple of years. He still finds the ball but why does he persist in this jockeying for position with another player is beyond me. Does Danger do it does Dusty. I reckon if this is a coach driven thing it is flawed logic, Surely he can stand more or less by himself and let MAX Palm it out.!? I was frustrated that time and again he needed to jostle and bounce of someone, surely the idea is to keep moving with a set strategy for palm outs??

From the chat.

Is there any info around what exactly Clayton Oliver is unsettled about at the Dees?

Hi Kent, he was frustrated to finish 5th in the best and fairest. I don't think he believes they value him highly enough. He also wants to play in a finals team. He's frustrated.

So are we rating Tom Morris as a journalist.

I don't and eveything he is saying can be found on Demonland

If he thinks they don't value him highly enough because of where he finished in the B&F, and that's if we believe that rumour, then I'm not sure I want someone so childish at the football club.  I mean... really.  Everyone who finished above him, with the possible exception of Viney, had a better year than he did.  It's not as if Jake Melksham finished Top 5.

He's pretty well connected when it comes to the MFC.

Also while I understand several Journalists have reported the Oliver rumour @Pennant St Dee and its up to the individual to believe or not. But there must be some noise to it somehow?

I hate to continue to tag him, but when@Chook in Perth confirmed last week that Oliver is unhappy then i definitely take that as legit.

Yes I know, I also don't believe the Nev Jetta story.

I love Nev, but hate to say time has just about caught up with him. No way Buckley and his FD haven't seen this either

And I'm one who is in the 'not believe' camp, but that's not a knock on you dazzle.  As you said, you're just the messenger here from the chat.

And when I say 'not believe', I can believe that he is potentially frustrated after missing finals.  But the B&F thing is strange.  So what happens if he were to leave and finish 7th in the B&F at his new club.  Does he crack it and move on from there as well?

I can buy the frustration, but I don't buy the 'wanting out' part.  It just doesn't add up to me.

This is a good point, hope someone is sounding him out/getting things sorted

DD I'm not disputing the rumour is out there and back Chook in Perth.  I'm just highlighting that Tom Morris is clearly sourcing his information from Demonland and then saying he's hearing. Amateur journalism (Good morning Tom)

I'm still of the belief it's step one in his contract negotiations by his agent and the process of getting the best LTD for his client

My opinion all along has been that I have felt he is unhappy and inpatient. He wants to play finals and yet its another year lost.

But I have always said that he won't get traded this year. Even if he does request a trade, my starting point would be two 1st rounders.

If he is seriously upset about the b&f finish he needs to get a reality check. Why would be be so upset, perhaps there are bonus triggers in his contract for a top 3 finish? His first half of the season was pretty poor so he wouldn't have done too well votewise up until the Crows game.

There is zero chance the club will trade Oliver while he's contracted.

If he is unhappy about missing finals or finishing 5th in a BnF then do something about it.

Do we think Luke Hodge in 2006 after being drafted in 2001 and having his club finishing 11th thought 'oh I'm sick of not playing finals I'm leaving'.

This is the calibre of player I want Oliver to be.

My read is he is frustrated that he is trying to bring lesser players into the game with his handball. He was a stand out as having a fast footy brain from the outset. His hanball has become less effective but its possible he still sees it as connstructive and therefore doesnt like being told by the coaching staff to run and kick. The idea he sees the 5th place on as a reflection of being undervalued is very different than thinking, i reckon I should have come higher. I am seeing his point of view especially if he imagines himself dishing out disposals to more creative type players than our mids, petracca aside. I reckon he is gone, not this year though.

The bit about the BnF finish is silly, but the bit about wanting to play finals is a legitimate issue.

If we continue to miss finals, we will lose talents like Oliver who play the game to win. For far too long we have had players who seem happy to just be an AFL footballer, and lack to desire to be the best and win at all costs. Oliver is one of the competitive types who wants to win, and if we continue to lose he will want out. It's not as if he's lazy and coasting, he leads the league in contested ball, so he is putting his body on the line to win.

Some will argue that Oliver should get better and then we'll win more. That's partly true, he has potential to become even better than he is already, and therefore push us to more wins. However, he can only do so much, and if you're a competitive type stuck in a losing environment, you'll want out.

I would be miffed as well if blokes like Melksham kept getting games all year because there was no better option.

The frustrations would be in line with the supporters - we played finals 2 years ago then fell off a cliff. The club came out and publicly said it was finals or a fail this year and we failed again. There doesn't seem to be anyone with answers within the club, so why not chat to other clubs and see if they have a clear directive and future goals in place

Jesus, is this [censored] rumour still being circulated?

This year has seen journos make up even more [censored] than normal, as most of them have been stuck in Melbourne with no direct access to players, coaches etc. Still have the same amount of space to fill so just writing anything and everything.

it's not just the journos, clint

player managers have a lot to answer for, planting fake suggestions to journos and other clubs to raise a player's profile. sometimes for this year or setting the ground for next year

in clarrie's case i think it is just a ruse to raise his contract extension value with mfc next year (probably early next year}

if he thought he should have finished higher than any of May, Langdon and Petracca he is kidding himself.

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.
