What size is this fish? Could it be the elusive big fish we've been trying to land for years? We probably need a riddle here.

Koi?

Snap 'I'm up. He killed us the other week.

Just a few ideas for the types of players we need. Take with a grain of salt.

Half Backs to replace Hibberd and Jetta:

Ed Richards due to the plethora of half backs the dogs have; Johannisen as a short term fill

Dan Houston and try get him back to VIC, Coffield as maybe a change of scenery would help him

Eggmolesse-smith as a very cheap option for depth who has upside and skill

Outside mids to support Langdon:

Liam Duggan, Brayden Ham, Justin mcinerney, Oli Florent (long shot), petrevski-seton as a hybrid mid on the cheap to rejuvenate his career

Ball use/forward of centre players:

Jack Billings as a free agent, Rhylee west who we bid on when he was initially drafted who can't get a regular game, Ben Ainsworth, Kane Farrell, Petrucelle, Lachie Schultz, Luke Breust (2 year contract for the experience to help with kozzy, spargs and nibbla)

I seriously rate Maynard. Collingwood would as well. He wont be cheap.

Weid and Brisbane's second rounder would be a steal in my opinion.

Why does he want to leave Collingwood? Langdon wanted to come home totally different campaign in my eyes.

Well... they have terribly handled their salary cap and jettisoned good players in their prime and apparently may need to do so again.

They have an old playing list with most of their better players 27 years old with a heap of others over 30.

Their coach just quit.

The board are infighting with a large spill on the cards.

He is 24 and probably doesn't want to play his prime in a rebuilding side.

Easy move to make in terms of where we play and train. Wants to play in a premiership.

I think we should give Quinton Narkle a crack.

Hopefully take advantage of Geelong's desire to top up with 30+ year olds and nab a guy who otherwise would be in their best 22.

Has shown good signs at times and maybe a change of scenery would help.

I think we should give Narkle a good 3 year contract.  But what trade bait can we offer?  Perhaps let’s look to trade out a player like Hibberd for Narkle.  Nothing against Hibbo.  He’s 31 so right in the Cats perrrrrrfect age bracket!?!?!

I wouldn't be trading Hibbo he's proven Narkle isn't

Petrevski-Seton is an interesting one - probably gettable for a third rounder, horribly mismanaged by Carlton, ex pick 6 and only 23. Option on the wing and half forward - he's not really a defender or inside midfielder

I really rated this kid early in his career but he's gone backwards tremendously.  He's horribly inconsistent.

The only role I could see him playing for us would be a high half forward or wing which involves a lot of selfless running which I'm not sure he's the guy for.  Maybe a change of scenery & some better players/mentors would help.

You're right with the trade value.  I wouldn't offer anything higher than a late third.

Just re-visiting last years trade with the Lions which so far has been a win - in points value at least.

We gave up:

  • 2021 first pick (currently 18 @ 985 points)
  • Pick 25 @ 756 points
  • Pick 68 @ 59 points
  • Pick 69 @ 49 points

Total = 1849

We received:

  • Pick 18 @ 985 points
  • Pick 19 @ 948 points
  • 2021 Lions second pick (currently 33 @ 563 points

Total = 2,496.

The difference of 650+/- rates to around pick 29.

If NGA & Father Sons pop up our 2021 first pick that the Lions own may drop a few spots which makes the trade even more favourable.  Obviously if we drop a few games the difference will drop and the trade doesnt look as good.

So as positive as this has been, it leaves us with bugger all trade currency with our first two picks currently sitting at 33 and 39.

If we're keen to play in trade week, I definitely wouldn't be surprised to see someone like a Weid offered up

So if the Maynard trade is on the table who/what do we give up?

Vanders straight swap? maybe throw in Chandler/Bedford for an additional/improved draft pick?

Keep trading forward next year's first until we look like sinking back down the ladder in the 2030s rebuild

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
