Geelong keeps fielding the oldest teams in AFL history. This is their time to go for broke because the edge is coming. It came for Hawthorn and it's coming for Geelong. 

Their average age is over 28 years old. They have Tom Stewart, who is 27, but then only 7 other players younger than 28, and the list of players isn't that impressive: Bews (26), Kolodjashnij (25), O'Connor (23), Henry (22), Parfitt (22), Simpson (22) and Miers (21).

Their salary cap shouldn't be too bad now either, because the players who should be being paid the most are actually at the ends of the their careers and would be signing contracts far less than at their prime. Selwood (32), Hawkins (32), even Dangerfield (30) are their highest value players but shouldn't be on as big a salary now. The next year or two is their big shot at a flag with this group because they don't have the players to replace those stars, which is why they are going hard at free agency (Hawkins/Cameron, Selwood/Viney).

Great point and IMO Cameron is making a huge timing error if he makes it to Corio next year.  The Demons are actually a much better fit in terms of the GF window and players hitting their peak in the next 3 to 4 seasons.  It goes to show how poor our marketing is when we can't sell this "window" opportunity to some of the big FAs.

Giants are finished,  they'll have to rebuild. 

Flat track Jezza will be a nice fit down there. 

GWS should match the contract and force a trade. They can pick up all of the Cats Tim Kelly picks, maybe even big Esava too.

I still think Preuss is worth stuff all but the Giants might be prepared to work him in to a deal that involves a swap of higher picks and future picks if they end up armed with plenty of them.

What a load of rubbish. Nothing will give me greater pleasure than watching Geelong get smashed on Saturday. 

The AFL keeps supporting the successful clubs and lets the rest just make up numbers for decades.

 Spot on.. free agency is making a mockery of the draft & so called equalisation and will see the comp dominated by only a handful of clubs much like the EPL...

Well that settles who I will be baracking (too strong a word) for in the GF at least.

i'd be taking a look at him if we miss on brown, absolutely young and you could say raw but would be a good goalsquare player who can clunk them and take pressure off weid and jacko, u can definitely see he has room for improvement and unlocked potential but he'd come cheap and at least gives us a younger alternative to mitch brown. also back ups the ruck well too.

Gee I seriously thought he'd stay. Imagine that phone call to Leon Cameron. This is going to hurt the giants big time and set them back. 

However in saying that yes he is a key forward and we all know how good he is but he wasn't great this season. He is very hot and cold. Maybe he is frustrated with the lack of success that the giants haven't reached yet. 

Well I guess we aren't in the running but I'd rather see him at geelong than collingwood or essendon.

As a comparison, whilst Geelong has 8 players under 28 years old, in our final game against Essendon we had only 3 players older than 28 (Hibberd, Brown and Melksham), and none of them are critical parts of our future success.

Geelong and us are a different points, where we are continuing to build and get better whilst Geelong are looking to succed in their Last Dance (or 2). We need to go out and get more mature players that can support our younger players and fill roles to help them be better because we already have most of the long term building blocks. Geelong is trying to use their current success to lure good players whilst they still can but, like Hawthorn, there will be a reckoning eventually.

 

• We are all very resentful that:
  • Geelong hasn't shot both its feet off like we have in the last 10 years,
  • Richmond, a basket case for 37 years, started getting its act together 10 years ago, and
  • Collingwood, with three less premierships than us in 65 years, has somehow remained a power club of the comp?

He's a ruck forward who would pair really well with Jackson, but it might be too early to put too many eggs in to the life after Gawn basket. I'm not sure you want him in the team if he's not rucking. The way the Saints used 2 mobile rucks both capable of playing forward is how I'd like use Jackson and a player like Esava in the future. The Cats actually do similar with Stanley and Blicavs now.

A few years before it was Lynch getting to a recent Premiership club in the Tigers.  You are supporting the AFL circus regardless if you decide to barrack for one of these two clubs on Sat Jaded

It is what it is. Geelong's offering is different to all of the Melbourne clubs. I would prefer an AFL where this didn't happen, but most of the time the FAs go to clubs after they've already become successful. Geelong was nowhere in the mid-2000s but since 2007 have been managed well (both on and off field) and have developed a culture of sustained success. It might all end when Selwood, Hawkins, Taylor, Ablett and Dangerfield go in the next 1-4 years, but before then, they're going to keep challenging, and whilst they're challenging their unique lifestyle offering will continue to be a selling point.

They have broken records for the age of the side they've fielded this year.

Their list does have other younger players though: not currently playing are Atkins, Cockatoo, Parsons, Narkle, Z Guthrie, Ratugolea, Close, Fogarty, Constable and Jarvis (all of whom have debuted at AFL level and are all 25 and under). Question is, how many will they keep (there's been talk around Cockatoo, Narkle and Constable leaving) and are they any good? Hard to know given they don't get regular games.
