Swans in Cairns for 2 days vs Demons less than 5 hours - why?

Can anyone confirm if this was a club decision to fly up & land 12.30pm  or an AFL decision as there is a clear advantage to the Swans

This is pharken diabolical if true, amateur hour in its purest form.

Surely not? Surely not?

Classic Melbourne if this was a decision from our end.

Surely we did not fly up on the day... surely.  Swans there for 2 days before us?

WTF is going on and whens something going to be done about it

Very true .. Goodwin was asked at his presser and said no excuses but clearly there is ..

That is this season, I am afraid. Teams are playing games at a disadvantage from time to time, short turn arounds, too much travel on game day, inequities in training and residential facilities etc. We had a chance to get back into that game despite our poor start but our execution was VFL standard at best.

Don’t disagree but how were the Swans able to stay for 2 days & why we didn’t do the same???

We have a few days there now, Green Island has some decent snorkelling experiences, is the Casino open? But whatever they do they better carry a bar of soap at all times, the constant fumbling is doing my head in.

Like Earl said above it’s unfortunate but this is 2020 for you.

Apparently we had a 2hr bus ride at 7am to get to the airport for the plane trip and landed in Cairns a few hours before the bounce? I don't want to give them any excuses as it was still [censored] poor but that is absolutely unacceptable if true.

Someone in the other thread said we went today so we could wait for Freo to fly up on the same plane after their game last night. WTF??? Cost saving measure by the AFL at our expense? And they don't give a stuff because they know that we will never push back or kick up a stink over it.

Wouldn't it have been smarter to make the Swans wait an extra day for US to return from Alice before heading over with them on Monday?

Hate making excuses but who knows , you jump on a plane early morning all the time involved plus flight time then racing to get to the ground to prepare with different humidity vs a team who woke up in the morning & turned up to the game to play as normal ..

That’s a disgrace & not acceptable & understand costs but at least make the swans do the same , clear advantage

What do you expect we are an amateur club? I don't know how many times Goodwin has to stuff us up but it's time to go. C'mon Bartlett make a move?

Anyone remember what Port we’re doing earlier this year? 4 am flights fly in fly out ring a bell? Stop making excuses for this mob. They are mentally fragile. A team that truly wants to win would have found a way.

How many sitters did we miss? Despite being 5 goals down we had every opportunity to win the game in the last Q. [censored] weak. I’m not a Goodwin fan but this performance was utterly disgraceful by the players.

I reckon so.

To recover in 4 days, not just once but twice or more, is just stretching the mind and the body just too far.

And put 2 hours worth of travel on top my mind would go into zombie zone.                                                                                                            Give them the benefit of the doubt; they will repay.

BTW the Bradbury plan didn't get damaged too much but a win against  GWS is very important now.

Another reason why I can’t take this season seriously (Oh and the minor fact that the length of games are shorter than junior footy)

I knew we’d lose one of these two Cairns games because of the scheduling and preparation, and raised this concern in the selections thread.

Meanwhile Bulldogs and North are playing about their 15th straight game in Surfers this weekend.

Good post. If true  This is frikn diabolical. The AFL makes us fly up on game day to cut costs?   On a 5 day break into cairns. FMD. You could see from how they started something just wasn’t right. I reckon those opening 2-3 mins were neeldesque. I don’t want to let them off the hook but that is really tough.

Don’t disagree with you, they  have a serious issues mentally, leadership and drop games against lower teams. But The Swans should have traveled at the same time.

Would Eddie McGuire ever, in these circumstances, agreed for Collingwood to be the club that has to play two games within four days in the heat and humidity of Cairns with less time to acclimatize than their opposition?

Hell no!

Where were our people?

The whole season is a fix - the Grand Final will be 2 of Brisbane, Port and Richmond and the Final 8 will not be decided until the last day.

The fixture and when teams travel is being used to manipulate results and flowing from that, the ladder. WWE has more integrity.

Pies 4 day break will play lions 10 day break due to their bye... great planning Afl & obvious they want lions to win... tigers play last 4 games in qld.. seems as though they are protecting the contenders for the flag. Nevertheless we have serious issues with our  mental toughness, leadership & culture.

If it was a cost saving measure from the AFL , wouldn’t it have been cheaper to fly them directly to Cairns after the Alice Springs game?

Collingwood had one of the hardest runs in the first footy frenzy. Perth -> Bris -> Adel -> Bris in 13 days. But of course we didn't care when we got the soft kill in the last of those 4 games

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
