God some of you posters are carrying on like we are a top 4 team. we came 17th last year and are 8th this year with some disgusting performances in that. So a bit of a reality check.

We need good decision makers across the park as well as more speed, a key forward to replace tom McDonald and a small defender to replace jetta.

Crows are desperate so I reckon they will make Jack Viney a big, big offer at the end of the year.

Yes agree. They will offer a 5 year deal worth about $800k a year. Jack is now 26 so in his prime.  Crows will be desperate.  Dees have to match it imo.

Agree. Hunter for Joel Smith is a win win. I think Smith will ask for a trade and Kangas, Dogs or Hawks might be likely suitors.

We definitely need another wingman and a small forward to help out Kossie. I don't know about a ruckman Preuss can't get a game and Bradtke is developing. I think we have enough depth in the ruck stocks.

How do we know Bradke is developing?

Anybody seen him? I would hang on to Pruess like grim death must have cover for Max

Hes already on the list. Chandler.

There's really no way to do any business in this trade period other than shopping around one of the value players. I know the instinct is to hang on to everyone and keep a list together but this isn't a case of packaging up Matty Warnock, Tom Bugg and Ben Kennedy for a 1st rounder.

Make the bold calls or be happy with what we have.

That’d be the greatest heist of all time. More like a first rounder & Smith

A test for us is if other clubs come calling on Salem.

He is a 'pre-Free Agent' this year.  Of late this is when clubs trade a player to get a better trade pick/deal than an AFL comp pick, if the player goes as an FA a year later eg GCS when trading May to us.

He would add 'silk' to any number of teams.

I'm in no way suggesting he would want to go or that we would let him go.  He is my favourite player.  But it would be surprising if the question isn't asked by other clubs.  A question they will ask of other players but the pre-FA year is when poaching clubs fancy their chances especially if the player is at a team high up the ladder.

The issue all clubs face is the reduction in list sizes and salary cap.  Players might want to go but clubs just won't have the room for them.  Don't believe any reduction has been confirmed but this will happen.

Another point is the draft, 12 months development is massive for a 17 year old.  Recruiters will have no idea, a kid that dominated last season my have struggled.  If this happened the Clayton Olivers draft year there is high good chance he isn't drafted and if he was it would have been in the 3rd/4th round or rookie.  He had a massive year and we picked him up early.

Hard job for the recruiters and list managers this year.

We won’t be matching that, or even nearly that amount. If it came down to that we would wish JV the very best. But I suspect Viney will remain at the club on a far lesser amount.

Wait a minute - in other threads you are saying we are a top 4 team and the problem is Goodwin.

They won't be doing it if Crouch is leaving as it would dilute their compensation so can't see this happening. If Crouch stays the last thing you want is Viney joining the Crouch brothers in the midfield.

The Doc needs a tranquilliser. He doesn't know whether he's coming or going. Any excuse to have a go at the club.

If we can Trade Tmac for a crafty forward or even some picks then so be it

I think he needs to move on and we do too

Interesting that he is your favorite player Luci. I have found myself expecting more from Salem each year and i reckon he has not come on as most of us wanted or hoped.

Leaving aside the trade that got him to us which only complicates matters, i honestly believe he hasn't delivered what i personally hoped he would when we first bought him in. I was genuinely hoping he would be a backline version of Adem Yze. Not just because of the left foot, but the speed and skill that OOZE bought to the team. Unfortunately Christian has lost quite a bit of his initial speed, and takes some of the shortest steps in the league. Im not saying he is cowardly. Quite the opposite as he is as hard as a cats head, but after his repeated hammy injuries his gait is as short as anyone in the AFL, so he looks fast due to his cadence, but the short stride he takes means he is nowhere near as fast as he looks. Add to that the dinky little kicks he is famous for and i am a bit disappointed that he has not reached the heights i thought he could. I was hoping for a line-breaker. He is far from that.

Salem has never (IMO only) been considered as a massive loss when injured despite his obvious skill.

If someone who followed him more closely had info that could change my mind i would be happy to see it, but my immediate impression is that he isnt one of our "indispensable" players.

I would be up for trading Preuss, particularly if we think Bradtke will make it and keep him.

Geelong might be interested and we might like one of their excess small forwards.  Here's a post from BigFooty on the subject from a Geelong supporter, I really don't know enough about the bolded players mentioned as possibles to make an evaluation:

We have a lot of small forwards/pinch hit mid types even with Ablett retiring - Miers Parfitt Fogarty Dahlhaus Atkins Close Narkle Simpson Evans Taheny Tarca and Parsons is a lot of guys fighting for 3 or 4 spots. The first 3 on that list are highly rated and I doubt we will let them go Dahlhaus wanted to come home he won't leave but any of the rest are gettable but I don't know how much interest Melbourne would have in them.

Is better suited to delivering the ball inside 50. We need a Zac Williams or Adam Saad at HB to facilitate that...

Are you serious? Papley is worth 2 first rounders. Why would Sydney want Tom McDonald who has been in and out of a side and overtaken by a 18 year old ruckman?

To be serious, it'd be our 2nd rounder, next years first and Tom McDonald for Papley.

You are why trades get done. That trade would get laughed out the door at

I'm a Salem fan. Admittedly, he hasn't (and probably won't) reach the elite status that we hoped, but he remains one of our better players and we don't really have anyone else on the list capable of playing his role. For mine, he's indispensable (until we get more players with his skill set at least).

I've seen far too many butchers at MFC to advocate for trading one of the best kicks in the team.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
