The goal umpire called it a mark. We were 100 metres away with the ball and players running. The field umpire ran in and forced the review. Disgusting game by the umpires.

That was a disgrace, AFL umping continues to be a blight on the game and integrity.

Have a look at his posting tonight - the ol' coq is having a troll I think.

Not at all. There are many on here that think he’s the best thing since sliced bread. He isn’t. He reminds me of JKH. Too small, fast but fairly ineffective. Could be exciting but doesn’t deliver (so far). Let’s hope he does soon. Compare Rankine.

Those last few minutes, the umpires did everything but kick the ball themselves to prevent us from scoring again.  Inexcusable.

I spoke to Steve Hocking after the game, who disagreed. Although he did ask for clarification as to which ones were the umpires, and what sport was being played.

Bearing in mind the umpires don't know the rules they're refereeing to, it was a pretty good go. Walk a mile in their shoes: what if you were asked to referee a sport where you didn't know what you were supposed to do? If they get some guidance from higher ups at some stage, they might give it a really good shot eventually.

So that doesnt get reviewed we win? We still had to kick a goal which we had struggled for that aspect all night.

It’s not guaranteed of course but we had all the momentum

I suggest giving them each a copy of the  rules and telling them to adjudicate the game according to those rules.

A tad dramatic. We have Port, North and Adelaide up next and a spare game v Essendon who look to be struggling. On tonight's form I reckon that's 4 wins which would make us 7-4. Hardly a disaster.

Lose to Port and we need to go 7-2 or scrape in at 6-3 maybe

Agree with you on most of it, but will hold on the trade till the end of the season. Can’t do basic kicks or handballs and is slow. Terrible game.

Unfortunately I just see him going down the same path as Tyson.

I feel he's hit his ceiling.

Well that was frustrating. They were a lot cleaner when the ball hit the turf until we started to click in the last quarter and really started to smash into the contests.  Fritta not handing the ball back really stuffed us at the end after Trac did so well to set up that one final chance. All those missed sitters in front of goal really cost us too. Viney was fantastic again and his kicking to a target has improved out of sight.

Agree with all that Rab. Massively frustrated with getting the rough end of the pineapple especially during the last almost climaxic 90 seconds. Thwarted again by lesser mortals sadly and our own keep shooting themselves in the foot. Rather than putting scoreboard pressure on. Filthy on  the 50 metre penalty against Fritter. Brisvegas boys were doing the exactly same and had umpiring immunity.

Brayshaw is a mile off it at the moment. At one point Viney looked at him for a handpass and decided to go it alone.

"Hmmm ... I'm a lousy kick. But I might just ... I mean law of averages and everything ... get it to a teammate. but Gus ... he'll just [censored] it up."

The lightning reflexes of the modern AFL player!

I actually rewound the tape to check, it was the goal umpire who called for the review. Did a weird holding chest stumble on to the field. Another cheating maggot as there was no reason why he wouldn’t be in position to adjudicate especially given there were no other players than Lever on the line competing. Cheat

Our poor kicking for goal cost us the game.

Viney, Petracca & Oliver led the way other than 2nd quarter when they were quiet, a number of players had very ordinary nights, so to get within four points shows we’re close.

As mentioned in a prior post we need to win a close one against one of the better teams, then we will be in business. We still have four of the bottom five teams to play, and at least with one favour from the draw play North in Qsld rather than Tassie!

The umpiring doesn’t help, they need 15 metre across on the ground so the umpires can see that 20 Brisbane passes didn’t travel the required distance. Only on team seemed to get pinged for holding the ball! Brisbane didn’t return the ball all night and also kicked the ball away a few times after the whistle for a free was blown!

It's truly the one  aspect of the game that has gone nowhere in the last 20 years

In fairness, partly due to S4It rules, but also due to poor adjudication

So how many games are you going to give him 10?

Here's a question. Why does the Lever score review need to stop play? Why can't the ARC review it behind the scenes and if it turns out it was a behind, then bring it back.

The goal umpire should have called it a mark from the start. The score review system is making goal umpires second guess themselves.

This problem has been irking me for years. Aren't goal umpires chosen for their specific skills in observation, quick thinking etc? The field umpires should give them more credit and let them make the decision without getting involved all the time. How many times have I seen a field umpire go up and appear to say to the goal umpire, are you sure, are you sure. Yes they are sure, they are the goal umpires, that is their area to adjudicate, they are the closest. Instead doubt is put into their minds because they realize the cameras and technology is there to prove they may have made a mistake. Stuff that! They should abide by the goal umpire's decision and be done with it. Let them do their job without this constant interference.

How many mistakes do field umpires make? No official questions them when they are on the field while the game is going on. We hear about it during the week. It's too late then. Let the goal umpires do their job!

When will this club ever learn to take its opportunities & win these games??? Basically own worst enemy with poor field kicking/turning over the ball & missing easy goals. Oliver kicking was shocking & has been for a while , brayshaw not sure what his role is?

I am so angry

Shot ourselves in the foot

Umps were terrible but can't blame the loss on that. We had a bunch of rubbish decisions/non-decisions go against us but we got a number of soft frees as well

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
