    Make no mistake though, the TMac question is the only one being asked. Melksham and Brayshaw aren’t going to be dropped for Jones or any of the kids, those suggestions are just laughable. The only player whose place in the side is tenuous is Lockhart, and they won’t make a pointless change like that after such a big win.

    I wondered a couple of weeks ago what qualities Lockhart possessed kept him in the side. He's probably never going to get a mountain of possessions but he's assured with the ball, he puts quite a bit of pressure on the opposition and he looks cool in a crisis. He could develop into a pretty useful smaller defender and I reckon he should hold his spot. 

    There are quite a few damaging smaller Brisbane players and we need someone like Lockhart to negate their influence.

    Hunt was the first choice I made, but the more I think about it if we're looking to replace the attributes Vanders brings: good size, strong tackler, has midfielder ability to sit on the back of a stoppage but can also play out in space.

    Isn't Trent Rivers the best fit?

    If we keep rotations high and limit his game time to say 60% in short bursts his tank shouldn't be so much of an issue.

    We have to keep the balance of good pressure around the ball, we can't bring in someone who isn't going to lay a tackle or have the speed to cover off.

    I've now had a chance to review Gus's first half and found it instructive. I acknowledge he wasn't perfect but using objective analysis (effective play, broke even, ineffective play) I found there was a lot more positives than negatives. Happy to concede 2 real clangers during the half. Although the worst of those (that some on here want to crucify him for) being the scrubber along the ground actually turned out to be an effective kick. I thought he was involved in a number of scoring chains and by definition; if he was ineffective we would not have scored. It was insightful to watch the first half and just watch for Gus and I found his positioning when he didn't have the ball was just as important. We can all be guilty of confirmation bias and in my case I'm most guilty of this when reading SWYL posts. Another example would be Saty where some peoples bias toward him actually negates what others see as significant contribution.

    Objectively, I found that the use of the adjective "abysmal" in describing his first half to be inaccurate and not supported by the real facts. To add further weight to this I've included Daisy's comments regarding one piece of play late in the first half.

    Based  on the above I cannot see Gus being dropped anytime soon and that's a fact (well actually an opinion).

    I'm getting nervous thinking what Charlie Cameron could do to us. I'm not sure Salem or Hibberd have the pace. I know Hunt's form is down but I'd be tempted to play him or Rivers to 'wear' Cameron. Another option would be Werridee's line up but swapping Harmes and Salem.

    Lockhart would match him for pace but he’d need on field coaching/leadership to get his positioning correct. 
     

    What they do to counteract Gawn will be interesting and I hope we have a plan B to counter counter act.

    May played on him last year I think and i would not be shocked if he does so again.

    If they can shut down the space he can lead into, may can negate his marking strength, which a small can struggle to do.

    Not that worried about Cameron. We win midfield battle ensures they attack from defence and gives us time to block the space in their forward line. My main guys I would like a hard tag on are Neale and Andrews. Harmes to Neale and someone to stay on Andrews even if he goes to someone else.

    Neale is key. A total A Grader.

    Harmes seems the obvious go to option.

    That seems the obvious with Brayshaw to move into the half back flank and Harmes on Neale  Last time against us he had a lazy 38 possessions and he ripped into us after half time. Good call.

    Petracca and Oliver could do some damage and cannot wait to see the match ups in the middle.   Inform Gawn  is on top of his game.

    You are right Binman the midfield is the key.

    Spaceman Tomlinson is my choice for AVB out on a wing; let's hope that across the game, May or Salem (whoever kicks out after an opposition point) actually sees him and avoids the  '...kick it to Gawny, no matter what...' syndrome. Tomlinson and OMac could be an effective partnership in this regard, making considerable 'metres gained' in attempts to drive forward. OMac is one of the better kicks in the team and provides another defensive option in this regard. 

    This gives Gawny some reduced effort and workload. Gawn needs support, as many have noted already. He is essential to ruck against Stephan Martin, and then marking around the ground in a variety of areas; Jackson could stay in the selections to provide relief for Gawn against the BL ruck No. 2, and there is a place for him in the side as a forward (marking and goal-scoring). If TMac is selected - he should be played at CHB - his days as a forward are nearly spent, preventing the development of the Weed, and now, perhaps that of Jackson.

    We had the offensive tag role last year with Jordan Lewis making a defender accountable. Jones could play on Birchall with the intention to prevent him getting enough free space to execute his corridor passes, hang off him all day, but give us a goal scoring option the other way, with his customary 40m goals from congestion. Melksham could actually make way there imo with his lack of pressure 

    I do want Tom McD for AVB in the side to take Harris Andrews away from Weid also as first preference. I'm just thinking of a speciality role Jones could play if he was to get in. 

    Otherwise he comes in as an extra mid in 3 weeks time to give others a rest

      The Sir Doug Nicholls Round kicks off in Darwin with a Top 4 clash between the Suns and the Hawks. On Friday night the Swans will be seeking to rebound from a challenging start to the season, while the Blues have the Top 8 in their sights after their sluggish start. Saturdays matches kick off with a blockbuster between the Collingwood and Kuwarna with the Magpies looking to maintain their strong form and the Crows aiming to make a statement on the road. The Power face a difficult task to revive their season against a resilient Cats side looking to make amends for their narrow loss last week. The Giants aim to reinforce their top-eight status, while the Dockers will be looking to break the travel hoodoo. The sole Saturday game is a critical matchup for both teams, as the Bulldogs strive to cemet their spot in the top six and the Bombers desperately want break into the 8. Sundays start with a bottom 3 clash between the Tigers and Kangaroos with both teams wanting to avoid the being in wooden spoon contention. The Round concludes with the Eagles still searching for their first win of the season, while the Saints look to keep their finals hopes alive with a crucial away victory.       And just like that, we’re Narrm again. Even though the annual AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Round which commemorates the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture to our game has been a welcome addition to our calendar for ten years, more lately it has been a portent of tough times ahead for we beleaguered Narrm supporters. Ever since the club broke through for its historic 2021 premiership, this has become a troubling time of the year for the club. For example, it all began when Melbourne rebranded itself as Narrm across the two rounds of the Sir Doug Nicholls Round to become the first club to adopt an Indigenous club name especially for the occasion. It won its first outing under the brand against lowly North Melbourne to go to 10 wins and no losses but not without a struggle or a major injury to  star winger Ed Langdon who broke his ribs and missed several weeks. In the following week, still as Narrm, the team’s 17 game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Dockers. That came along with more injuries, a plague that remained with them for the remainder of the season until, beset by injuries, the Dees were eliminated from the finals in straight sets. It was even worse last year, when Narrm inexplicably lowered its colours in Perth to the Waalit Marawar Eagles. Oh, the shame of it all! At least this year, if there is a corner to turn around, it has to be in the direction of something better. To that end, I produced a special pre-game chant in the local Narrm language - “nam mi:wi winnamun katjil prolin ambi ngamar thamelin amb” which roughly translated is “every heart beats true for the red and the blue.” >y belief is that if all of the Narrm faithful recite it long enough, then it might prove to be the only way to beat the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Sunday. The Lions are coming off a disappointing draw at Marvel Stadium against a North Melbourne team that lacks the ability and know how to win games (except when playing Melbourne). Brisbane are, however, a different kettle of fish at home and have very few positional weaknesses. They are a midfield powerhouse, strong in defence and have plenty of forward options, particularly their small and medium sized players, to kick a winning score this week after the sting of last week’s below par performance.

      There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

      At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.
