I hope Jack leaves on his own, because that's what is best for our list. 

If he's strong-armed out though, I worry about the damage that could do to what little team culture we have right now

    Agree Mickey, but again hypothetically, if you traded him to Cats after matching contract offer and say they gave you a good outside mid and a first round pick and you got say a good key forward with that pick , what would you say to that?

     

    If the AFL doesn't adjust the compensation threshold/formula down offers could easily fall into lower compensation categories as the sal cap is being slashed post covid. 

    Geelong aren't known for paying high $ to get players. 

    Those two things would make it difficult to get a 1st round or end of first round comp pick.

    Clubs should start lobbying the AFL to change the thresholds.

    I know the question wasn't phrased for me, but I think I'd take it to be honest.  

    I've been conflicted throughout the season around Jack.  On the one hand, he is our vice captain, can play to a high level and is clearly the sort of player you want in the trenches around finals time.

    On the other hand, it's been clearer this season that his style of play can also be to the detriment of the team, and at 26, he may have peaked somewhat.  He doesn't always make good decisions and he isn't a good user of the footy either.

    If the club, and Jack, parted ways respectfully then I think I'd be okay with it.  But if it went pear shaped then it could hurt us down the track.

    So, if Jack said he would like to move on, and the Cats offered something like the above, then I think I would do it and move on.

    Yes Wise, it’s a bit of the each way argument. Wouldn’t like to lose him, but if he wanted to go and we benefited , I would be ok with it. He is harder than anyone at the contest, but unfortunately is not a good user of the footy, very often to our detriment. I also have the feeling he has a smashed up body and that he may be past his best. If he stays great and I hope his style is modified, in that he disposes at first option, instead of trying to break tackles and reach the touch line.

     

    Why are people even talking about Papley and Zac Williams. The last 2 weeks has shown us that we're probably going to be a bottom 4 team next year. We need to start rebuilding. Take the viney compensation and nail the draft pick.

    Hmm seems Mr Shadow was close to the mark. Viney is gone in my opinion.

    If this is our decision it would be a mistake of the highest order.

    I understand he can be a bit polarising and he has some limitations but he a bull that needs to be used better. He is in the mould of Selwood but with less polish. If he can add some calmness to his game and be more measured with his decision making he could be one of the outstanding players in the comp

    These players are not a dime a dozen, they are incredibly rare. And while his shortcomings are well known to us here with better coaching and direction he could explode. Maybe they have already tried that, maybe he doesn't listen but I wouldn't be happy with him leaving until we explored every last avenue to help him become a better player. Eveyr player has limitations and we have to work out how to work with what Viney has, not what he doesn't have.

    I am of the view the he and Oliver don't work effectively together as they are both 'see ball get ball' players that get in theirs and others way often. I think we have a coaching problem with our midfield and this needs to be fixed asap. We have gone from being #1 in clearances to being an also ran.

    That to me is all on the coaching panel and the confusion of how we are trying to play.

    In my opinion he's looked a little distant this year despite having a reasonably good season on the field. 

    I look back at the vision of Max being announced as sole Capt. and I reckon it's cut him pretty deep and may well have been a catalyst for him to reconsider his future. Alternatively, maybe he's sick of our mediocrity and wants a flag? 

    We need to give up some quality to get some outside run or another KPF and this might turn out good for both Jack and the club. 

    If Jack Viney plays in a Jeelong Jumper next year, i may have to give up this entire game 

    To see him play with those arrogant [censored] will make me physically ill every time they are on my TV

    I’m assuming that the posters who are reporting this same issue are hitting the quote button below the post and not the 3 horizontal dots button above the post which is where the new edit feature is. 

     This change is part of the new software. People will get used to it.

    At an emotional level I would hate to see Viney go. He is Melbourne and the Viney name is Melbourne. 

    However, you can’t blame a player craving success. Sadly, if he decides to go, it indicates that may also be tired of playing for an unsuccessful team and putting up with the negativity. He probably also has a view that a turnaround and a Melbourne flag are unlikely. He may be disappointed and even resentful with losing the captaincy. 

    He simply may see the opportunity to cash in before it’s too late. At 26 is body is waning. In 2 or 3 years he may have little value to another club and have a broken down body. 

    Rationally a move makes sense. Just like Isaac Smith who may want to leave the Hawks after great service to that club and seeing the club spiral down. Isaac is a lot older but his body in better shape than Vineys. Isaac still has his speed and disposal skills, and sublime kicking ability. And I have heard it said that he wants to cash in before the end of his career. 

    So I suspect Viney may well want to cash in before it’s too late and taste finals success. So Geelong makes sense. Going to an unsuccessful club would make no sense. 

    However, we lose a heart and soul player and a high possession player irrespective of his poor disposal. Viney is a player that can win a game in the clinches through sheer will and intensity. 

    Could not blame him for wanting to move on. Todd may also see the sense of a move and have a fresh start without the Melbourne/Viney cloud over his head. 

     

    If Viney leaves I will be very dissapointed but at the same time i dont blame him.

    It just confirms that if a team continues to dish up rubbish performances season after season it takes its toll.

    Current coaching and results will probably help him decide to seek greener pastures.

    I wonder if we got an experienced coach for next season if he would stay otherwise i dont see Viney as the only player who will want out and then our cycle of a non destination club continues. 

    I dont want to go through that again, there has to be some reward for sticking with the MFC.

    Have you not been watching us? we're 10th, and the way we've been playing we're a big chance to lose the final 2 games.  So that puts us about 12th.  Following on from 17th last year. And that's with no injuries this year! We won't be so lucky next year. If Goodwin stays, how can you think that we're not bottom 4 next year? 

    McDonald is cooked, Melksham is cooked, Brayshaw is as slow as he's ever been, Viney may leave, Pickett hasn't showed anything, Jackson is a ruckman playing forward until Gawn is done, Fritsch is now without a position as his goal kicking has let him down, Lever is still shaky in defence. Please don't try and sell hope.

      As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie? 
      Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG. Unfortunately, performances like these went against the grain of what Melbourne has been producing from virtually midway through 2024 and extending right through to the present day. This is a game between two clubs who have faltered over the past couple of years because their disposal efficiency is appalling. Neither of them can hit the side of a barn door but history tells us that every once in a while such teams have their lucky days or come up against an opponent in even worse shape and hence, one of them will come up trumps in this match.

Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide.       There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

      Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season.
