Did I just hear BT proclaim "And the crowd roars!" following a Carlton goal? It's artificial crowd noise in an empty stadium.

We got rid of Kent in the same offseason we signed vandenBerg to a 3 year contract.

At best it's inconsistent.

AvB is seen as a leader at the club, and to be fair, had produced an injury free finals series.

Possibly got to the stage that we could only carry one injury-riddled player, so they went with the one that is better to have around the club.

Ah gotcha, the official "Always injured but he's a good bloke" list limit quota is 1. Makes sense.

That feeling you get when you realise that BOTH St Kilda and Carlton are more exciting, playing a better brand of footy and probably closer to a flag than we are. Man have we gone backwards. I see a bad moon rising.

Trying to develop a culture. Perhaps do a bit of a search from a few years ago about a small group of Melbourne players being in Bali when there was an alleged "incident". Of the 4 players that were there, 3 of them are no longer on our list...

And for tonight, Kent had 11 possessions and kicked 1 goal. Wow, 3 votes D Kent.

vandenBerg last week 7 disposals and 0 goals. Must be Brownlow incoming then?

I'm rapt our list strategy revolves around Bali holidays.

I have a fair idea of two of them, not sure of the other two. PM me.

To be fair, I'm not a huge AvB fan. But at the time, I was all for moving Kent on, and still don't have one bit of regret.

He will have a good game here and there, we probably won't win a flag without him, and most likely wouldn't have won one with him.

Yes we have 4 in this category. Might be carrying a few too many.

This is simply not possible, St Kilda have a new coach and about five new players in their side. It takes years for a new coach to get their message across and the players to gel. I look forward to 2022 when  Lever and May should have chemistry.

Saints did pay overs (and for Hill, massive overs) to get the 5 new players to the club. They did also play that style under Richardson, and have had the benefit of 4 games at Marvel. The one game not at Marvel they got pounded by the Pies.

They are average at best, and [censored] away a 5 goal lead against North in Round 1.

I knew this thread would start up the whole Dean Kent thing.

We did nothing wrong in moving him on, and he's not playing as well as this thread suggests anyway. We don't make decisions with the benefit of hindsight, we make them at the time we make them, and at the end of 2018 moving Kent along was a completely justifiable decision, as was keeping vandenBerg.

The tendency of MFC supporters to complain the moment an ex-Melbourne player kicks a goal is so incredibly frustrating.

Hilariously so. Why people can't be pleased for the individual and not see it as an indictment on the personnel at the club who made the decision at the time, blows my mind.

But of course they're the same folk that gloat about the difference between obtaining Petracca over McCartin.

when fit, kent was a regular in our best 22

when fit, kent will be a regular in the aints' best 22

good luck to him - really liked him at the dees, but he needed a fresh opportunity

will never forget that footage of him sitting on his lonesome, in tears, up in darwin

our player welfare management was so poor

The person in charge of the crowd sounds tonight is trying really hard to inject some vibe.

Yes but surprisingly they still haven’t made a collection of different crowd noises for different circumstances and trained someone how to use it.

Ess and the filth not a bad game so far.

I’ll never forget that goal he kicked against west coast either ... wish him all the best , except when he plays the dees

It’s not just us who have long periods without scoring. Collingwood kicked 3 goals to nothing in the first five minutes and one more point to half time. Essendon are five goals straight.

Demonland would be in meltdown if that was us.

I mix albums for people. I’d love to have a crack at it.

or his match winning goal against the bombers in the dark years.

And it's still looking like we should have traded 1 of our surplus inside mids to outbid and overpay Hill to have his sublime kicks to advantage moving forward. Worth the money.

  • AFLW REPORT: Gold Coast

The forecast said wind. The ladder said mismatch. The scoreboard said obliteration. Melbourne didn’t just beat Gold Coast — they dismantled them: 13.15 (93) to 0.6 (6). An 87-point obliteration, the Suns held goalless, and the Demons delivering their second-highest winning margin and third-highest score in AFLW history.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #28 Will Verrall

It was a tough ask for him to break through as a 199cm ruckman in the shadow of an all-time great in that position who is also the club captain. He had some good days at Casey but was unable to progress and was delisted at the end of the season.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #29 Tom Campbell

The 33-year-old Campbell has yet to play AFL football for Melbourne, but his Casey form has been strong and he has been retained as a ready-made ruck depth option who is widely regarded as someone who is excellent for the culture of the club.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #30 Harry Sharp

The Demons acquired an interesting player in Sharp, who narrowly missed securing a spot in the Lions’ premiership team last year. The 22-year-old medium forward played in the opening round this season and ended up with 18 senior games, although he was substituted in or out in for ten of those matches. He demonstrated glimpses of form, but ultimately ended the year on the margins of the team.

Worked his way back after a slow start and a further slump in form going into the midseason but became a solid contributor for the club in the latter half of 2025. Closing in on 300 goals for the club.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Gold Coast

On Friday, the Demons return to our Casey Fields fortress where they have a 77% win rate. The scent of September is in the air and the struggling Suns are on the horizon. The Cranbourne weather forecast? Ominous, like the match itself: a strong chance of carnage. Let’s be honest, last week’s first half against the West Coast was a training drill but we dropped our guard in the final quarter. While this match is a mismatch on paper — second versus seventeenth — football is won in the wind, the contests, and the moments.
