POSTGAME: Rd 02 vs Carlton

It’s amazing how it’s ingrained in the whole club that a ripping first quarter will amount to zip in the scheme of a game.

I watched the first quarter with a wry smile and waited for the last 3 to happen. It’s so very predictable.

Max was absolutely breathtaking with his ruck work in the first quarter. Some of his taps were extraordinary.

The only thing that really kept me watching was Rivers. He will be a serious player. Very classy debut and he’s got plenty of go too.

Betts was only alone cos Smith flew for everything and anything leaving him alone.

But yeah, Jetta to Betts in any ones world is a Monty... except Goodwins.

That’s what I meant by left alone, surely Jetta to Betts is just logical and Smith to one of their talls too is a no-brainer (although he should be played forward).

Take the 4 points and accept we are not as great as we looked in the first but better than we looked in the last.

Perhaps. But I did think our last couple of minutes we pretty good. But you might be right .......

At 3 qtr time we were still in a great position to make this a good result. All we needed to do was match their intensity for a period until we broke them. But we didn't.

I'm a bit lost as to where this club is at again. Maybe our list really is terrible. But can a terrible list play the way we did early in the game? I still feel like as a club we just do not know how to compete when it really gets physically tough. I just don't see how a different coach gets different results in that area, but who the hell knows at this point.

But you know what annoyed me. The team singing the song and no one bothered to notice our captain who just had his first win as captain and was our best player was still doing his fox footy interview and he missed the song.

Great call, his first win as captain should’ve been celebrated. Poor form from the others, and honestly after giving up such a lead they should’ve have been that excited to sing it.

Lol, unreal return to the footy.

Likes for now.....Bennell looked like he got through ok. Trac is just a beast, would’ve lost without him I think. Rivers although not the same type as Whelan just looked like he belonged immediately. Reminded me of Wrecker’s debut. He might even get some votes. Good to see Hunt amongst the goals.

Some of our boys looked dirty after the game

I think this is most infuriated I have ever been after a game of football. Definitely after a win, except for maybe Gold Coast last year and I think Brisbane circa 2016.

Thank you for reminding me of some of the positives from this game DZ. Rivers was fantastic. Trac showed he's ready to be a super-star of the competition. Oliver is close.

Goodwin/MFC nearly manufactured a scoreless half against the opposition. Does he get credit for that or just blame for our capitulation?

Where's all the ANB and Hunt haters tonight? I'm angry but i still love my football team. Go Dees!

The first quarter was as good as it could get, the rest of the game was a disgrace.

I know people don’t like OMac, well suck it up. Choosing Smith over him almost cost us the game, Smith doesn’t look like a key defender. A floating interception defender perhaps but zero sense of how/when to go for contests and spoil.

Before I say this let me be clear, I like the look for Jackson and I think he has a big future with us. But having him over Weiderman just gave us nothing, he didn’t do enough at the ruck contests and didn’t have any forward sense. Give him time but Weids should be in there.

But what really concerned me was the middle of the ground, they murdered us after half time and I’d say we broke even in the second quarter. Viney and Brayshaw were MIA at times and all of a sudden our ruck domination with Max went to zip.

The other big problem is Tom McDonald, he wasn’t even in the contest today again not great delivery but neither did he create a break even. He should be put on notice that one more game like that and he’s dropped.

We got the win, we didn’t deserve it. 1-1 gives us a chance but right now we look right off it.

Jackson gave us exactly what Weideman gave us last season as a fourth year player. I would much rather persist with that than waste any more time with Weideman. He had two easy marks he dropped early inside 50 that he will take with a few more games under his belt.

We got the 4 points

Bennell got through the game

Petracca looked good

That's all

I saw it and would be finding out who instigated it if I was coach. Also ball out ANB for his jhow good are we celebration of his lucky second goal. Not the first time and a bad influence.

It’s a good thing those waiting for Tom McDonald to come good aren’t holding their breath.

He needs to play deep forward as the primary target. It seemed we alternated between Fritsch and Petracca in that role, neither being suited to it.

Rivers looked like a young Guy McKenna.

Powerful.

I hope the fluffers on here will start to see that we have serious cultural/coaching problems. This is a pretty good list, and we still cant put away a lower ranked club while our supporters talk about flags.

We are MILES off.

Jetta manning up on the 204cm McKay is one of the most bizzare coaching decisions I've ever seen.

Yes, and it let McKay really take us apart with his (checks notes) 6 possessions, zero goals, and 14 Supercoach points.

A win is a win. 3 things:

1. Beating Carlton by a point is better than beating them by 100 (give 'em a sniff and then take it away from 'em :) ). I've seen both in the past 3 years and refreshingly loved both famous wins.

2. Keeping Carlton scoreless in the 1st quarter was a beautiful thing to see. Hasn't happened since 1951. Again, refreshing to see another record broken to celebrate - set prior to my birthdate! I will get serious sledging mileage with the poor unfortunates who follow CFC - scoreless in the 1st quarter HA HA HA.

3. Get Stuffed Carlton

May has only played about 8 for us. This was his first poor one. He's good. Forgive him one bad one.

Nibbler played his best ever quarter for us. Disappeared after that though.

Yes, he was Ok but faded like everyone else

    REDLEG PRIDE by Meggs

Hump day mid-week footy at the Redlegs home ground is a great opportunity to build on our recent improved competitiveness playing in the red and blue.   The jumper has a few other colours this week with the rainbow Pride flag flying this round to celebrate people from all walks of life coming together, being accepted. AFLW has been a benchmark when it comes to inclusivity and a safe workplace.  The team will run out in a specially designed guernsey for this game and also the following week

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe
