I don't know how reliable this information is, but a dentist I know posted the following and he is not one to post BS:

"OMG! Government mandate as of 8pm last night stopped 20 000 dentists working for a minimum of 3 months. We can’t return to work until govt allows it, as the aerosols from dental drills cause Covid to remain in the air for 2-3 hours. Another industry closed down. Bring on the lockdown now"

And his reply to another respondent re lockdown, was as follows:

"This was from a client. They get direct emails. Sunday night will be lockdown night for at least 3 weeks for all of Australia"

Interesting times ahead, or so it would seem.

A bit of a read, but this is probably the best article I've come across so far. It provides an idiot's guide to the underlying maths of how the virus spreads, and why some countries are doing so much better than others.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-03-26/coronavirus-covid19-global-spread-data-explained/12089028

In short: there's still hope avoiding the worst, but only if we get absolutely everything right from this point onwards. If you're not extremely concerned, you are being naive - but mindless panic achieves nothing.

Also, the USA is beyond screwed.

The local council elections going ahead in Queensland is just so wrong it defies logical discussion.

You just declare the existing councilors elected for an additional term of six months and hold them then.

If the politicians cannot do something so simple what hope do we have of managing this issue

The key to it all,  is whether our Bodies build a resistance to the virus, or Not.?

If we can re-catch this virus,  the world is in for a horrid time.

Surely we can organise electronic voting,  for council elections.

Currently, most evidence suggests you are unlikely to catch it twice. There are several cases where this is reported to have occurred, but it's far more likely that patients gave a 'false negative' test result between positive tests.

Sorry but the Elections should go ahead

postal votes Are fine and strict policing of social policies has been undertaken at the early open Booths.

If we delay Any  more this Spendthrift LNP Lord  Mayor  Will bankrupt the City with his spending and outrageous promises.

He today ONLY ONE day prior Yo the election has promised free parking in the City in Council run meters ! Also free transport on Council buses!

How long will this go fir till Monday?

No he has had nearly 12 mths of rorting taxpayers funds and deserves to go as rates WILL go up no doubt fund for eg.$9 million to "green" Brisbane.

Huge difference...

Firstly there is a vaccine for the flu, it means people won't be infected in mass numbers and there won't be the amount of carriers.

Secondly because of the mass infections there will be a high number critically ill who will need intensive care and we don't have the number of intensive care beds to cater for these numbers. It means a lot of people will die, a hell of a lot more than from the yearly flu outbreak.

People who need critical care for other matters such as heart attacks, strokes, cancer, major accidents etc will struggle to get care because the beds are being used and the hospitals are full.

Thirdly the % of people dying from this is higher than from the flu, so again the risk is a lot of deaths.

...and finally, I repeat there is no vaccine. This is a big enough reason.

There are currently 11 dead and 11 in critical hospital care out of 3000 confimed  cases

Rate is .0037  so even if we get 50000 cases i really dont think (Barring some other issue ) the numbers are going to over whelm the hospital and something like 170 deaths far fewer than the normal flu in a year

Anyway as others have said we all play a role in this and it will be over sooner

Exactly. Or that it mutates into a different form of virus ( like spanish flu did ) and is much worse.

The information I have is that we have 15,000 intensive care beds in Victoria.

The current modelling is that we will have a need for 100,000 within the next 3 to 4 months.

I think that might just overwhelm the hospital system.

Stay home...stay safe.

We are lucky so far.  Look at Italy where there is a death rate greater than 10% of approx 80,000 cases.  Once a hospital system is overwhelmed, the mortality rate increases massively.  The only way for us to stop things getting to that point is to go into complete lockdown ASAP! This is nothing like the flu!

Don't know where you got your figures. According to this ABC report there are 2200 intensive care beds in the whole of Australia.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-03-27/coronavirus-australia-covid-19-icu-beds-ventilators-hospitals/12090420

Out of interest Malaysia has around 3700 ICU beds so we aren't that great

How many beds does Australia have?

If you've been in the bustling corridors of an Australian hospital, you'll know there is rarely a spare bed.

Australia has just over 2,200 intensive care beds, with almost half of these in NSW.

That's around 8.9 ICU beds per 100,000 people, which is better than New Zealand (5.1 beds) but worse than Italy (12.5), where COVID-19 has overwhelmed hospitals.

COVID-19 patients in ICU will need a bed for around 10 days, according to Imperial College modelling, which is a lot longer than the average time for other causes (just under four days). And those beds can mean the difference between surviving the disease and dying from it.

For the patients who will be hospitalised but won't need intensive care, Australia has about 3.8 hospital beds for every 1,000 Australians, which is lower than the OECD average of 4.7. Japan and South Korea have more than triple Australia's number of beds per capita.

Know what I find interesting about this Chinese virus?

The fact that we have all been happy to share the flu with our families for the past 200 years, with never a word about mass hibernation, even though it kills scores of vulnerable people every year, and will again this winter..

This is not the worst virus that has ever hit the world, so what changed?

And before you snap, I am asking a serious question, and not downplaying the need to stay off the streets right now, as I am following the current guidelines.

I watched this Asian reporter when this all began to spread. She was interviewing a doctor from the US.

She came out with, due to the last four viruses that had escaped from their infectious disease facility, do you believe this one is another man made virus?

Well i almost fell off my chair when she said that to him, i was expecting him no it's from bats, snakes etc, but he had a long pause and gave the China is doing their best to try and stop the virus speech.

She kept on asking him, not once did he say no it's not man made.

Also when you haer from different news reports, no one has came out with yes it's from bats, iv'e heard bats, snakes and some other animal.

This could be man made, and as a result that's why they are worried?

Things just don't add up? With Sars they got that under controled with in a few monthes, there is something that's got them scared.

I think they are missing a trick by including hairdressers and barbers as essential services. Close that loophole and anyone in dire need of a hairdo, trim or dye job that has had to resort to a really bad home made alternative is far more likely to stay indoors and self isolate. It's fine for authorities to appeal to our moral conscience in this time of crisis but it's our soft underbelly of vanity that they really should be targeting to help flatten this curve.

C'mon Rab.    Surly you can see that,  Pollies must have their hairs trimmed,  as a matter of urgency...  or even daily.   Tashes trimmed,  Comb-overs set,  Merkins coloured,  and Brazillans waxed.

It's a matter of National Impotance.    Just ask Slo-Mo,  or T'Rumpadoo.

Whether that is true or not, unless there is a leak in China we'll never know (They are becoming more common how China didn't include 43,000 positive tests in their data as they had no symptoms, You can't trust data from China).  The link was China's only high risk biological research centre thats run by their military (Like everything important n China) next to Wuhan.  The rumour was some researchers made extra cash selling used test subjects (animals) for extra cash after they had been experimented on on the local food market.   There are cases in the past of some being charged.  Whether this was the cause of the virus as there was research ongoing for the corona family of diseases at the time as they work towards responses to them, as it is the same family of SARS for example.  Latest leak from China in a report says it was a 57 yr old wet market merchant is patient 0. Whereas China currently still states they do not officially know

The reason SARS was easily to get under control was you weren't contagious until you developed symptoms.  Hence you could temperature scan every person before they boarded flights etc and quarantine them very quickly with a high hit rate.  Covid-19 is not like that, but far less lethal than SARS which is good.

In saying that the virus whether originating from a lab or nature, it does occur naturally in bats, simply poor hygiene and outdated special meals is the cause.

In the end we need to isolate,  wait for the peak and slowly go back to work and hopefully a vaccine is developed in the next 18months or so.  Luckily the current reports says you can't get it twice, but its. still early days.

The Vic govt are rushing to convert one of the two ICUs at the RCH (Melb) into an adult ICU. Ward nurses at RMH are being retrained to work within their expanded ICU alongside the specialist ICU nurses. The old Peter Mac in East Melb is apparently going to be reopened for COVID-19.

Sh#t is going to get very real in the next month.

The introverts were spot on: stay at home, sit on the couch and avoid others.
