Good decision. Wonder what Viney thinks of it.

hopefully it takes the pressure off him a little and he can focus on having a ripper season.

Big Max the right call, onya big man.

I'm glad Jack is still vice-captain, and it sounds like the club handled the situation well in that they kept Jack in the loop the whole way and didn't just surprise him with it.

I think Max is the right man for the job and he could very well lead us back into the finals this year.

i'm on record as saying that i was sure both would be made captain. And am very surprise that hasn't eventuated.

Agree they have handled it well. Adding to your points WB i'd add the decision not to have a leadership group outside a captain and VC is cleaver in so far as it makes both positions more significant in some respects and therefore mitigates a bit the impact on Viney of being demoted.

Onya Maxy!  Very happy with this decision.

But SWYL, you know what they say about people who refer to themselves in the third person.  ?

Oh i totally agree 100%

But they didn’t ask to be Captains, they were still in nappies as far as i am concerned. The whole thing was a disgrace

How do you know that they never asked to be captains...?  That is your speculation. As i said... they were not up to be captains nor were they experienced enough. It was a "political " statement for the Club moving forward that failed.

Yes. The Club failed them both and ruined their careers

I love what this decision means.
Maxy is the type of person who is willing to be himself in what can be a very conformist and macho culture while still being ruthless in his pursuit of excellence. I think for too long we have used the criteria of either 'speaks well' or is 'competitive and self disciplined beast'. I am not sure we have looked at the human relationships side of things enough.
I have heard that MMM have thrown shade at the decision already though.

In my view these days Max does meet all the criteria of competitive, self disciplined beast, speaking well and with the required diplomacy, whilst still being able to be his own very unique and entertaining character.  It takes quite some intelligence and character to be able to do all those things at once.

It would only be a second consideration, but I imagine that the regular press conferences required of a captain figure will now get a heap more interesting and entertaining - might even draw some more media exposure for the MFC and our sponsors.  At the same time, it may also be something that we need to consider sharing around some of the exposure as the media often sought out Max anyways, no doubt chasing some more entertainment factor.  Conversely it probably wouldn't hurt for most of the team to remain more focused on footy and winning games.

A new skipper for 2020.

Max Gawn will lead the club this season, supported by Jack Viney as vice-captain.

Looks like he is counting his money already in that photo.

The  captain should be the on field leader of the team. Not the media darling nor the pr front man for the club. So long as Maxie provides the on field leadership and direction I don't care how he speaks or how entertaining the press conferences are.

Nathan Jones was a great captain who led from the front and whose only weak point was that he could not lift the team in a match. Should we ever get silverware while he is still playing, his hand should be on the trophy together with the captain and the coach.

My hope is that Maxie can add the extra dimension and lead our club to success.

2020

Go dees.

Go Maxie's mob/mates/maulers/mugs/mass/multitude/  - add your own.

The majority of players & coaches have obviously seen the light.

Thank Lucifer common sense prevailed.

If i ever see another leadership group model rise from the ashes it will be too soon.

Super outcome for the players & club!

Glad to finally have one captain,  not that shared leadership crap.

Gawn’s my favourite player and a top bloke. Hope he translates it well to captain

Great decision to have a capt and VC only. Absolutely love it.

Are we the only club structured like this with no other leadership group???

I think this decision is a slap in the face to both Trengove and Grimes

It shouldn't be! Both were put under the gun by an Inept administration and Coaching Fraternity

Every club has a leadership group, if we have a great year others might follow

Back to the old days, Leadership groups are always hollow to me.
Everyone on the field has a job to do, just do it and support your teammates.

Owh,  Illeism, this is a form of self promotion and you don't want to go down that path do you?

I love the notion of having a captain and a vice captain and no leadership group as such.  A sign of maturity, and confidence that everyone in the playing group can and will be a 'leader' when their turn comes.  I congratulate our Club for being prepared to back their judgement, and break away from the current AFL trend.

Not really. It is only that i have been banging on about these useless “new age” ideas of Dual Captains and Leadership Groups for years.
it covers up the facts that a lot of our players just haven’t been good enough

I honestly think the Club has finally got it.
strip it down and get serious

Sorry dmma I meant a leadership group like ours or do they all have more than 2 in their leadership group.

Basically are we the only club with 2 leaders in the leadership group in the afl.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
