CO-CAPTAINS : VINEY, GAWN

VICE-CAPTAINS: JETTA, T.MCDONALD

Surely they make an announcement before the first practice match or do we go into this game without an established leadership group?

It's only a practice match. Jack is still technically captain and Max isn't available anyway but I get your point. I've noticed that quite a few teams have announced their leadership groups in the past week.

My guess would be

Co captains - Jack Viney, Max Gawn

Leadership group: Nev Jetta, Tom McDonald, Jake Lever, Jake Melksham

Let's be honest - the leadership group and the big announcement is more for 'show' than anything.  We will already have leaders across the ground (eg. someone like Jake Lever or Nev Jetta directing traffic in the backline) so not announcing anything right now isn't a big deal.

Max sole captain for me......

Jetta & T Mac vice captains

IMO Viney needs to focus on getting his body right & playing consistent footy without the burden of being skipper. Lever & May shouldn't even come into consideration (yet). Lever 19 games for MFC & May 8 games for MFC. Both reported to be on $800k per year & need to play more consistent footy.

Agree Wiseblood.

IMO when the structure is actually announced will make zero difference to the win loss results this season.

That is a ridiculous statement

Why have a leadership group then?

OD not much knowledge gained in your many years !

Wiseblood time to change your name to Not very wise blood !

Seriously guys good Leadership groups set standards and maintain them.

Have a big influence out on the ground if they do their job properly.

Poor old Luke Hodge Ron Barassi (and Stephan May)  must be wondering what Leadership is.

in good Clubs it makes a big difference.

Perhaps last  years Leaders efforts have dulled your judgement and memory after watching the Dees

What I’d like:

Captain: Gawn

Vice: Viney

LG: Harmes, May, Jetta

What I expect is they’ll go with a group close to that with Gawn and Viney Co-Captains.

You have totally missed the point. I said it will make no difference when it is announced. i.e today, tomorrow, next week or the day before the first game.

Profound apologies OD and Wiseblood.

Perhaps I should  catch up With DL a bit earlier in the day.

Hope it's great season

Go Dees

Anyone catch 7 News a short time ago? Wife text me saying they previewed a story about our captaincy and Viney is set to lose it.

Tom Chadwick reported that Viney was not amongst the top vote getters in the players vote.  Specifically mentioned Gawn, Lever and May as leading that.  Said that it was possible the players could be overruled, but unlikely.  Apparently Viney was very disappointed according to Tom.  That was about it.

I think jack has plenty of time to be captain he needs to be a bit selfish and work on his own game for a bit, max sole captain but leave Viney in the leadership group tmac vice captain

Interesting if it turns out to be true.

While I'm sure most would be happy with Max as captain, going with a Lever or May as VC (or both) would be a questionable move.  Again, I'm only going by the info above so it's all assumption, but it would be clear that the playing group as a whole value them as leaders even though they have struggled to get on the park.  The players would know more than us on this issue, and wouldn't vote for them if they didn't rate them as leaders, but it would still be a very interesting outcome if true.

Looking in advance obviously but surely lever would have to be one of our next captains?

If Lever can stay on the park, he should wind up captain in the future. He’s the most natural leader we have out there and acts as the general directing traffic. We don’t have many vocal leaders and onfield coach types unfortunately.

Agree I have little confidence that either of them can stay on the park.

Time will tell.  May hasn't exactly covered himself in glory, but I'm more bullish about Lever's long term future with the club.

If the Co Captaincy model is again adopted then this club again refuses to make HARD DECISIONS!!

Viney needs to concentrate on getting a game!

Disappointing if this is true and some turd in the club is leaking information.

Yes I saw the channel 7 report and my first thought was who blabbed? As no decision has been made or at least ready to announce. I still remember many of us questioning the original decision elevate Viney to the co captaincy that [censored] off Jones at the time. I don’t think that decision was driven by the players, it was a call by Goodwin? but I may remember that wrong. Many said at the time, why so early in his career, just make him vice captain and let him learn from Jones and co. Now it seems the players are not impressed and Viney has spoken about not being ready, not understanding that not everyone is an unstoppable bull at the contest and at training etc, etc, etc.

I mean I have seen this so often in the workplace where people are promoted into people management positions too early but more importantly without the leadership training to understand how their behaviour can impact on their team members. So you get managers who believe they have to lead by example instead of stepping back and asking others for their thoughts and ideas. Anyway maybe that’s old school thinking, I am not being paid $300k plus a year to be an AFL club Leadership guru.

Well said Earl

I never liked Viney as Captain for all the reasons you have stated.
I am not having a go at him, he is just not made of the right stuff to be Captain.
People management is a tough gig, hey i never wanted to be top dog at my work. I just wanted to work. If my Boss told me to work late i did it. But i didn’t take work home with me. I left it at the Front Gate and picked it up the next day

Captains are that 24/7. It takes special people to do it right

No, this is spot on and absolutely well put.

Despite a spirited third quarter surge, the Demons have slumped to their worst start to a season since 2012, remaining winless and second last on the ladder after a 39-point defeat to Essendon at Adelaide Oval in Gather Round.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.
