Training Ground?

We should just build a big complex in the MCG Carpark

They don’t allow cars to park there anymore, haven’t for years

Would an alternative be to build our facilities underground beneath the MCG with a full size underground stadium beneath the G. I appreciate this would cost a bit but how awesome would it be. It would also solve the planning problems instantly. The entrance could be a the gates to hell theme.

I think they'd have to do it at night and hope no one would notice

Would get my vote straight away.

This whole situation is beyond absurd, The oldest Club in the world does not have a home base!

But we here know all that….

The main reason now is we are wedded to this idea that it has to be a stone's throw from the G.

Why did the Pies leave their spiritual home in the first place?

Because Eddie always wanted Olympic Park and saw the perfect opportunity in 2005 to effectively steal it when he was appointed to the board of Athletics Australia thanks to his mate and former Pies player Rob Fildes. This article explains half the story behind the "acquisition" of Olympic Park:
https://www.smh.com.au/national/collingwood-secretly-lobbied-for-park-20090811-egz0.html

The real question is how did McGuire get on the board of Athletics Australia when he had no involvement whatsoever in Athletics up until then and what negotiations did he have with Brumby. It is just another classic example of ruthless opportunism by McGuire, one of the luckiest [censored] on the planet. It was also unfortunate that at the time (2007-2009) we were in our darkest period and had no hope of seizing the opportunity. That's what makes this current period in our history all the more important in finding a home.

Love it, we could call it the pits! We could also have a bunch of those daylight lights they use in Iceland.

As it should be. We were born out of The MCG. That is a fact

We SHOULD be part of The Southern Stand upgrade

There are options outside the "G proximity idea" but we are welded to that area.

Whilst I would much prefer our ‘World class’ training facility to be near the MCG  it appears we have ‘missed the boat’.

Time to go All In at Casey.

Agree with the above. Time to go all in at Casey IMO. Otherwise the alternative for near the city could be Brunswick Street Oval.

Problem with a permanent base at Casey is that you limit the talent pool (mostly off-field) when you move operations to outer suburbs. Casey is nice little additional home to have but there must be a reason why it's not being considered long term.

I am not sure the opportunity has gone but it is going to be some time before it happens. Think  the end of this decade. It won't matter to me by then.

I know they're wedded to be as close as possible to the MCG precinct, but why they have not explored developing Brunswick Street Oval is beyond me.

The ground has history being the home of Fitzroy Lions from 1896-1966, but with Fitzroy now gone we could take over their old home and make it our own.

It's only 4km from the MCG, has plenty of room to develop being in the Edinburgh Gardens precinct (might need to convince to Tennis club to relocate up near the North playground and cricket club to Alfred Crescent Oval).

They could refurbished the old Grand Stand to have the locker rooms/showers done up. Build their admin, physio, Gym and meeting rooms. Maybe as well as a little supporter style museum and community hub given there are current squatters in the Grand Stand.

They could avoid the need for a pool with Fitzroy Swimming Pool near by and a social club by coming up with some sort of arrangement/sponsorship with Lord Newry Hotel across the road which could become a supporter hang out and meeting area.

Finally it means that our AFLW team could play out of Brunswick Street Oval while our alignment with Casey can stay in touch with maybe one training session a week at Casey Fields with the VFL and VFLW sides staying at Casey Fields.

That's just me though and instead it looks as though they'll keep trying to get something in the MCG complex.

It's an idea at least. Something there has been very few of lately.

Also a stone's throw away from where Norm Smith grew up, would be fitting!

Been mooted by myself and others in the past, apparently Yarra Council would hate it and it has massive community use at the moment that the lefties in the area wouldn’t relinquish to a professional football club. (Nothing against lefties btw)

Brunswick st oval is not the right size/shape for AFL training. Too many community groups would kick up a stink, not dissimilar to Jolimont/Yarra Park proposal.

IMO it will be either sports precinct, such as car park F building + Goschs or perhaps on another state govt owned land (eg Docklands E-gate) or we will have the status quo, a combination of AAMI/Goschs/Casey

Any land owned or controlled by a local Council scared of its residents will not get through

Having lived in Brunswick for 15 years, I tend to agree. Throw in a yoga centre, a wellness clinic and a vegan cafe, we might get it done.

Although it falls into the seat of Richmond in the state electorate which is safe Labor.

As for those suggesting its too much of a shoe box, does anyone know what the dimensions are? Obviously as part of any build they can re-do the dimensions some what. We could at the very least get it Marvel Stadium size dimensions wise?

Well it basically comes down to Government funding at all levels. I just saw North's facilities were upgraded through council funding, because it incorporated community facilities.

It's difficult to put forward a case for a training facility close to the CBD when there's no votes to be gained. We have more chance of getting funding for a facility out at Casey.

Yeah just like the monstrous and obcene funding arrangements at Jeelong! No wonder I despise them so much😡

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack
