WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - HARLEY BENNELL

Serious?  Just said that the emphasis is on the SECOND syllable.  What part of that don't you get?

Probably not permitted due to the contamination risk.

Funny Gary Lyon mentioned it in the interview on SEN this morning. Said 17 is a legendary number at Melbourne but wasn't sure if Brett Lovett could get there for a jumper presentation.

Loved all the shoutouts he gave, his Mum, Ross, his agent, beyond I reckon what he would be taught to do, sounds like honest appreciation, suggests he is a quality bloke beyond being a brilliant footballer.

Also just by the by but Ross always had wraps for HB as a bloke and a footy player. If HB had been able to get up sooner I reckon he'd still be coaching.

I get confused by that

Is it Bennell, like Pummel

or Ding Dong Dell, [censored]'s in the Ben Nell?

ha...censoring nursery rhymes.

It’s the latter.

I'm all all about HB but I got a greater appreciation of Ross Lyon after that interview.

The big if is will his calves hold up. If he does remain injury free fit he will be a gun week in and week out.

And totally agree he could really change our fortunes. I have followed the club a long time. In term of recruits probably only Peter Moore comes close in terms of potential impact on our team.

I think Kelvin Templeton was the triple A excitement factor, until it was realised he could no longer kick further than 35M.

I get the distinct impression that we haven't paid overs for Harley though.  Not sure there will be any GC or Freo supporters dumping sacks full of 20 cent pieces at HB's feet and not just because there will be no supporters at the game.

...and I also get the impression Harley can still kick well over 35m too!

That wouldn't surprise me.  My recollection isn't that great on this matter, but I think Garry and Brett are/were in-laws too, so there may also be a natural affection on that basis too.

I saw this comment and immediately thought of BBO and then I castigated myself for Bitters would never be so crass.

Are we still going on about how to pronounce Hadley's last name?

@Demonland , I think we need to pitch to get Harley on for a podcast interview just so we can set this straight ?.  Plus, he hasn't even played a game for us yet and I sense he's already becoming a bit of a fan favorite (watch out Nev).

Funny you should say that. I actually initially typed Peter Moore AND Kelvin Templeton. But after considering it i deleted Kelvin. Was an out and our star - one of the bests forwards i have seen live. But was cruelled by injury and by the time he came to us was slow, big and as you say couldn't kick past his shadow.

In terms of raw talent, albeit way past his best, Phil Carmen came to mind. Insanely talented player who was the complete package early in his career (for one or two seasons). Brent Crosswell also came to mind.

I remember Crosswell and Carmen taking some big speccies in the red and blue, they were absolute dominators for their clubs. I think Carmen played a few blinders for us. Seemed to be able to take big pack marks at will when he was on.

That's not fair in my opinion Grr-owl.

You are directly  throwing that at Max and if no names are mentioned it is unfair to many or all of our players.

Harley was extremely emotional and spoke beautifully but his journey has been a lot harder than any one else's so he was reflecting his wonderful spirit and appreciation of all the Club who have been very serious in backing him all the way.

Well, I was trying to emphasise why, perhaps, Harley is a cut above as a sportsman. One of the major takeaways from The Last Dance was the seriousness of MJ. Winning was everything to him, and I sense that Harley has something of the same quality. Not everybody does.

I was talking about this topic with a mate and he said surely Jeff White is on par with Harley in terms of a quality recruit. Have to agree. Early draft pick, came to us early in his career and was star for us.  Had forgotten all about him.

Very different but I know what you mean. Jeff White never had this many injuries coming to the club (i read HB has done his calf 25 times which is wild) and certainly didn't posses the natural talents that HB does.

To be honest, I don't think we've had someone like HB in the team since perhaps Davey/Yze - both just natural footballers and had so much class with ball in hand. It's exactly what we need and even a 70% Bennell is going to be a huge difference today.

Noticed Harley talking to various players as they walked off the ground.Good to see.
