Luke Jackson, fantastic. He was worth Pick 3 every day of the week. I know there was debate around the ruckman … I think Luke’s going to be an outstanding player. He’s your modern day Nic Naitanui-type. Obviously Kozzy Kropinyeri-Pickett … they moved up, Melbourne, to acquire him. They wanted him, they’ve got him through the door, that elusive small forward. Trent Rivers, I’d like to mention, is one of the most elite kicks in the draft. He’ll be a half back for a little while, but I think he can also fit into the midfield at some stage.

This comment and assessment by McQueen is not sour grapes, at all.

It is more a justifiable and mature assessment, requiring the evidence of time that only further footballing experiences and applications to the game can elicit in all three young men. At this point, I'd vote an A grading on potential; note that such a grading could change either rapidly or over time - so I concede that McQueen has made a wise call deferring appropriately to another point in time.

I'm unsure how to rate this, seems like we've gone very left field apart from Rivers who should be a steal. Really need to nail these high draft choices. Jackson moves well in the juniors but hasn't been playing long and there has been many a KPF who have looked the goods and never made it for whatever reason. I thought we'd target high top end talent for immediate impact, not a 4-5 year view. Yes he may come in and go OK. I have a strong view on picking up ruckman early in the draft and history relates to that also.

I love my indigenous players but Pickett only averaged 3.5 effective disposals a game didn't he? At pick 12 I think it's a bit of a waste tbh, yes we need his type but is another project player IMO.

How would you rate our draft with our original pick 3 and 8?

Freo - Young, Serong, Henry

Port - Bergman, Georgiades, Williams on top of Rozee, Butters and Duursma last year who have had immediate impact.

GC - Rowell, Anderson, Flanders, Sharp on top of Lukosius, Rankine and Ben King.

Carl - Kemp, Philp - last year Walsh and Stocker.

GWS - Ash, Green - Caldwell, Hately, O'Halloran

Melb - Jackson, Pickett, Rivers - Sparrow, Jordon from last year and Hore who has been great.

 

This opinion wont sit well with the optimists but I'd say a B- until proven otherwise and I do hope I'm wrong. In Taylor we trust, apparently... Apart from bringing in Rivers, who may not even play next year, we haven't brought in any elite users of the ball, Langdon is not the saviour there either. Time will tell, it's all one big lottery at the end of the day but it's always frustrating to see other clubs nail their picks while we.....tbc

Overall very happy and excited by our draft picks. I like that we got on the front foot and traded out next years first rounder to get pick 8. Like others I feel if we had of waited until draft night to split 8 we would have gotten better value for it. Having said that it looks like we were always going to pick Pickett with our first pick after Jackson and I’m happy with Rivers as he comes highly rated and fills a need for us plus with little extra bonus of been good mates with Jackson. 

Overall I give us a B+. Job well done, over to the coaching stafff now to get their bit right.

There is no reason Freo would pick Young ahead of Serong on draft night if they rated Serong higher. They picked in the order they rated and Young was gone at 7.

Freo couldn't gift us Young in some deal without losing their 2nd pick because Carlton bid Henry at 9.  Your plan looks like this:

7 Freo Serong

8 MFC Young

9 Carlton bid Henry

Freo lose pick 10.

Or if we do the trade with Freo and they agree to let Young through then Carlton can pick him at 9.

You're clutching at wet straw.  We had the alternatives covered and got the result we wanted.

I'm sure Jackson could become a good player for us, it's just the go home factor, that's in the back of mine.

Kozzie, is he the small forward we have been needing for years, so I'm very happy to have him, can't wait to see him playing next season.

Rivers, is a steal for our last pick.

I would rate it an A

Jackson looks good to me with so much upside. Moves so well. Glad we took him as he is a very unique and players like him don’t come around that often. Playing basketball for Australia speaks for his talent and should not be underestimated. I am hoping he makes it as a full time forward and plays along side Weideman in the years to come. Pruess can take over from Max

Pickett we obviously rate him and you see why from his highlights. Excited to see him play. 

Rivers write up is very good and Taylor seemed happy he was still on the board. All you can ask I think. 

Taylor seems to have taken somewhat of a risk here but I like his style. He did draft Oliver after all. 

I like that Taylor drafts players that often do not align with the ratings of the media. He looks at the future not at the now as much. And with all due respect to the media if they were that good you would think they would be working at a club.

Jackson, looks like he will fit in. As he matures I expect him to be a difficult match up. Would love to see him kick goals.

Picket looks like he wants to play and pressures the opposition. Great that he has family at the club, with Neville. Our indigenous program, is it led by Wonaeamirri? Anyway, it will make a difference within the group and the wider communities, welfare and acknowledgments. Can see May, Neville, Bennell and Picket forming a strong bond, and bringing others with them. Hope he can make goals out of nothing.

Rivers will be a dream for Crossy (I rate as the best kick in club), Lewis and Vince with his accurate style of kicking, if they mentor him. Hope he can break lines with his precision and footy IQ.

I gave it a B+, I had hoped at the start that we were going to get Hayden Young with our first pick and Cody Weightman with our second pick, but it came clear that we wanted Luke Jackson and Kozzy Pickett. In the end I didn't mind this, my picks were probably safe picks and we have gone a bit left field. I liked the fact that we traded our pick eight for ten and twenty eight and we were able to get Trent Rivers because of that trade, who could play the same roll as Young would have anyway.

Non vanilla, all WA kids from the same successful under 18 group who bring a positive, winning approach. 3 WA kids  in itself brave IMO. Non conservative, that we are often accused of being.

We seem to have got, who we set out to get.

Doubt it. All he does is grade clubs against his own ratings.

That said, I wonder what he would've given the Pies in the year they took Thomas and Pendles. 

It's also somewhat soothing to be graded along with Hawthorn and Richmond, generally not bad company in recent years!

Do I know what I'm talking about?  No.  No I don't.

I have to go on gut feeling.  While it's taken time to warm to selecting Jackson, I think we've absolutely done the right thing.  He might take some time to develop, which means he will come under some scrutiny when some of the mids and half back flankers hit some good form, but we need to be patient.  He shows all the right traits of being a modern ruckman/forward/midfielder and he could be something special.

Pickett was a no brainer.  One of the areas on the ground we struggled with was not only retaining the ball inside 50, but having someone kick goals when it hit the deck.  This kid might struggle early to see out games and be consistent, but he has the talent to turn games on his own and kick goals out of his back pocket.  Not only can he win us games, but kids will have his number on their back and come along just to watch him play.  

And Rivers looks like an astute selection.  Good size, a very good user of the footy and someone who isn't afraid to take the game on.  Could slot in across half back but could have the capacity to run through the middle as well.

Again, I don't know much more than that, but I've got a good feeling about these selections.  We've taken some risks and they are ones that could pay off handsomely in the future.

A lot of us would be aware of these circumstances, but very few would have "seen the need" to say thither. The spectre of "sour grapes" 

however should not be necessarily construed as wrong.......

Langdon - good fit - good value
Tomlinson - questionable fit - solid value (contract hurts but he's free)
Jackson - interesting fit - solid value (think he can easily be worth pick 3 if it works out)
Pickett - great fit - ok value. If we play well the future first round pick could be a steal, if we go poorly it won't look great
Rivers - solid fit - solid value

2 supplemental period picks - watch and see.

Overall list needs:
Forward line impact tall type - tick
Pressure and crumbing forward - tick
Backline talent with kicking - tick
Outside run - tick

Midfield balance - fail
Backline tall depth - fail

I think we've got a glut of young inside mids who could play if they come on - Dunkley, Jordon, Sparrow - and that we didn't do much to address the list needs of the inside/outside speed and skill type of mid/flanker. 

Why did we keep both Wagner's, know that we've got ANB, Spargo and the young mids I've just mentioned and not make a move for a skilled mid/forward type outside of a flyer on Bennell? Too many of the same type of player - there has to be someone out there we could've found with some classy midfield skills? And if not why aren't we taking rookie shots on guys like Harmes and Vanders? Jason Taylor watches 1000 players a year, the 50th best guy he's seen this year isn't better than our very extensive depth of similar types?

With the exception of an ageing Lewis we seem to have improved our class across all areas.  Now they just have to perfom on the field.

 

Take out Walker who was a category B rookie for JKH and you have it right. I rated it as an A+ We recruited a tall forward\ruck, a small forward and a running half back. Can't complain about that.

Haha. So we could draft Robert Harvey, Robert Flower and Tony Lockett, and you'd still be unhappy because although superstars, they never won a premiership. I guess you're right, mate. I'd prefer we drafted Mitch Morton and Steven Armstrong (again).

Recruiting Rivers who I rated a top 25 pick was a bonus. 

The beauty about this draft compared to last year is all 3 are all ready to go and could all play round 1. We knew last year that the likes of Bedford, Jordon and Neita were all going to be playing VFL all year for development.

The way I look at the Jackson pick is that we are bring him in as a key forward more then anything. Watching his highlights the way he flies and clunks his marks reminds me a lot of Tom Lynch from Richmond. A 200cm key forward alongside Weideman and McDonald will give our forward line a whole new dynamic. Jackson coming in allows McDonald to play that 3rd roaming tall which he is best suited to.

I expect Weideman to fill out more and play the stay at home forward alongside Jackson.

His agility at ground level is what might enable him to contribute. He needs to get to contests and when it hits the ground (if he doesn't mark it), he needs to get to work. If he can do that, he's a chance to be helpful, but even then he'll need a bit of size. Still think McDonald is our number 1 target.

yep, no doubt. And fingers crossed Tmac can get back to something like his best. Question in my mind is  will Jackson be up for being the second fwd at the start of 2020? or if not,  be at least fighting for that spot with the Weid. Im not sure if we can play all three, but if LJ's mobility is being likened to a midfielder then maybe. Will be eagerly awaiting what LJ and Kozzie look like at AFL level.
