Was going to be picked up at the start of the 2nd round until Robertson sliding threw a spanner into the works. Reckon this one will end up as one of the steals of the draft.

that's a great article. Pity we couldn't swap with Port; 12 and 18 (potentially Pickett and Robertson) would have been very nice.

That said, I'm bullish about Rivers. He's a good size with a good kick, and Brisbane have been drafting pretty well; if they rated him at 23 we did well to get him at 32

Superb Debut from the kid.

Has some serious dash, can find it and deliver it well!

Potentially our first rising star nod for how long?

Was surprised to see him in, but happy for him to stay. Hibbo will need some injuries to occur to get back in.

Edit: Rowell is tearing WC up. 18 disposals an 2 goals to 3 qtr time... Rivers may have to wait for his RS nomination

Oscar McDonald, Round 21, 2016 was our last nominee. We had three others that year. I’m confident Rivers will get a nod sometime this season.

Great get for us and will be nice to see a Rivers across halfback in red and blue again. He’s a good size to mop up in the back half and has a neat kick on him. Welcome to the club Trent!

Was good to see a Rivers across half back again. And he does indeed have a neat kick. We’ve found a long term player here I reckon. Hibberd won’t be back in the side anytime soon if Rivers maintains form!

We've done a lot of trading,  and less drafting early,  since that time IIRC.?

An excellent debut. Showed good run and a well weighted kick but was just as impressed with some of his defensive aspects. Is it too much to have a youngster take the kick ins?

Agree. One goal saving big tackle just outside the square on one of Carltons talls (Casboult?) springs to mind. Love the combination of grunt and polish.

His skills stand out above the others already. Has poise. I think opposition sides would've watched him last night wishing they had him. Just levels above most blokes in the red and blue already. I actually wish Rivers took all the kick outs. May and Salem need to never take a kick out again.

Interestingly Hayden Young debuted on the weekend who plays a similar role to what Rivers does.

Young had 11 disposals 46% disposal efficiency 3 tackles and 92 metres gain.

Rivers had 12 Disposals, 87% disposals efficiency, 2 tackles and 286 metres gain.

They'll both have good careers, but Rivers impact on the game over the weekend cannot be underestimated.

Jeez, I love the composure of this young guy. Solid penetrating kick, good in the air, very good decision maker.

Trent Rivers is now my pick for best first year player.

In his 7 games, he has shown his pace and his skills and his intensity and courage to go at the contest.  His marking is also very good. I will put him automatically in the team across half back.  He can even play on the wing.  He takes the game on. Last night he also took some of the kick ins.  Not safe 15 metre chip kicks. Good clearing kicks.

Good signs so far in his debut season.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
