“Maybe it’s what needed to happen for us to improve. It’s been lineal improvement year on year for four to five years now. This year we took a hit, a big one, but one that makes everyone internally reflect and get a true indication on what it is going to take to get to the level we long for.

“I’m positive we will find our way back.”

I will put my hand up and admit to being super critical of  him this year, he just didn't do enough or lead well enough, but i love him and love what he has gone through and what he stands for.

Good on him, lets be honest, its good positive news and he will reach 300 games and he deserves to and this great (it is great for all of its non greatness...) deserves to have more than just 1 player reach the 300 mark.

Good on you Jonesy, i hope you prove me and a few others wrong.

His finish to the year was pretty woeful, but I still think footy clubs in general are too quick to turf out older players after 1 bad year, which could be for a multitude of reasons. I'm tipping him to bounce back.

In saying that, he won't be captain and he will have to learn to adapt and master another position like half back, or next year will be his last.

Jones has been a great clubman and has stuck with us however I believe he should have retired. I don't believe he is in our best 22 next season so will be interested to see what happens.

Love him. Found it hard to watch him this year but glad that he'll make the 300 club. (Fingers crossed).

One comment was of great interest to me - "Playing multiple roles all year and having a really injury interrupted prep before the season, I managed to get through the year."

I'm not sure about anyone else, but @Satyriconhome said that nobody had an injury interrupted pre-season so I don't know why Jones would choose to lie about something like that...

Who do you have taking his spot?

Yes, positive news if he plays on merit. Hope he gets to 300.

Sparrow. Maybe langdon if we get him. I could throw in the likes of Chandler and Jordan who are at least got plenty more years in them.

Both him & Viney had an interrupted pre-season only managing to put in about half the usual build up.

Reason for Edit:  just saw this off the MFC site from Viney (extract)....

..."This is probably the first time l'm not having post-season surgery, so l'll be looking to have a rest for two to three weeks and let the body recuperate," he said. You get to the end of the season and you're pretty banged up, so you do have too give it a little bit of time to recover, but once that period is done, I will be into training.

"I'm pretty motivated, after the season we had, to get into training," Viney said. "I haven't had a pre-season for three to four years now, so l'm just looking forward to getting my body into the best condition possible to get through a pre-season."

End.

P.S. That highlighted part is a worry.  Would have thought he'd be always motivated and super motivated after a seaaon like that.

I think there are a few that'd be dropped before Jonesy for those guys.

Chandler isn't even close.

Would he be offered another season if we had been playing finals and/or been half decent over the past 12 years? Probably not.

Let's be honest, this is legacy pay for sticking through grim times. Love the bloke, but he's depth at most from here out. If he's top 22, then we have problems.

Are people kidding he is not in the best 22 right now? He played every game this year, who takes his position? We have so many average players that I don't believe anyone can deservingly take his spot.

Good utility option, hopefully he gets to 300 but I don't see him running around in 2021 but he may surprise me.

On ya Jonesy

With Jonesy pretty sure to retire at the end of next year, our next most experienced player is Melksham with 168 games!

gives a good indication of the lack of senior experience in the team

I am a real fan of Jordon. He could be a very good one.

About 15 players had injury interrupted pre season, that’s the main reason we had such a horrible year, speaking to Corey Maynard, who retired recently, he’s absolutely positive about next year, says we will be back as a force when everyone is fit and firing!

I'm aware, it was a tongue-in-cheek comment that has been misunderstood.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
