I guess my point is that I think that the whole "premiership player" or "involved in a premiership" is often overrated. Plenty of duds have premiership medallions and plenty of stars don't. Yeah, just like all the premierships that Clarkson bloke had been involved with before he got the gig as a senior coach. I think even Leigh Mathews admitted that there is an element of luck in winning a premiership or just getting close. Based on that, we should be making our recruitment decisions based on how much luck they can bring to the club with them. 6 1 Quote
Caligula's cohort 1,014 Posted August 23, 2019 Posted August 23, 2019 Good signing for the club. As other posters have mentioned, Richo and Burgess had a good working relationship at Port and is a key reason why Richo came to Melbourne. Goody and Richo have a similar coaching mantra where they embrace players as opposed to firing rockets up them, and are generally non-confrontational, so I think we will see a more cohesive coaching panel which will translate to better game day performances. 12 Quote

So, Goody put his finger in the pie and has thus seen and enabled an early firming-up of another (Richardson) whose pedigree is sure to be considered lower than his own at the present moment. Something 'Putinesque' about that strategy, don't you think? Just a thought.... Is Richardson into Traditionalism too? Quote
Deeoldfart 8,201 Posted August 23, 2019 Posted August 23, 2019 From the MFC Website: "The Club will speak in more depth about his position at the end of the season" It seems to me from this, that there are more dominoes to fall, and the Club is still in the process of clarifying what Richo's final role will look like. Maybe it depends on who else comes through the door, and who is shown the exit. 3 1 Quote
nosoupforme 3,085 Posted August 23, 2019 Posted August 23, 2019 (edited) Sometimes we make changes to our list or coaching staff that we like or hate and in this case IMO is a good get for us. Richo will help rejuvenate the list and will be a good support for Goody. That is only one small part of the puzzle the other is to Draft wisely a couple of seasoned boys and a good number 2 pick might land us a ready made recruit. We are on the right track. When l heard that A Richardson was joining us It was a kick in the guts for the Kangas who tried hard to sign him and a win for us in the end. Hopefully we can kick them in the guts a second time in as many days. Good guys don't always run last. He has made my day. Edited August 23, 2019 by nosoupforme 5 Quote
billyblanks35 33 Posted August 23, 2019 Posted August 23, 2019 Whenever sentiment is positive about a new player or hire on demonland it generally turns out to be a disappointment. Eg. Jack Watts, Paul Roos, Steven May to name a few. The opposite is also true. When we think very little of a new recruit eg Marty Hore it turns out well. The fact that most people are a bit negative about this appointment makes me know it will turn out well. 1 1 2 Quote
DeeZone 10,594 Posted August 23, 2019 Posted August 23, 2019 Well done Dee’s we really need to tweak our game plan and build up our players. I thought the Aints showed us up in several areas the last couple of times we played them. As posted previously there are more dominoes to fall at MFC and I for one like this change. Go Dee’s.!!! 3 Quote

Yep MFCSS is my mantra Seriously though what benefit does a sacked coach bring to a dysfunctional playing group. He comes with no authority or credibility. It has echoes of Mc Cartney which didn't end well. Mind you he was pretty good at outcoaching Goodwin on so many occasions. Just shows really how shallow the professional pool is. Spot on. I just can't see what benefit this appointment will be. Burgess I get what he brings in contrast. Quote

Ron Burgundy 8,588 Posted August 23, 2019 Posted August 23, 2019 Seriously - some of the posters here should just support another club. Sure - it’s been a schizen season. There are reasons for this - some unfortunate, some probably due to our own incompetence. But to bag out this signing is red hot. Like Burgess, Richardson absolutely had options with several other AFL clubs, and he chose us. Plainly this is a good sign. There’s NO way he would’ve committed to us if he thought we were a basket case - I mean, why would he?! Despite some of the criticism here of him as a failed senior coach, the reality is - he’s a super experienced AFL man and he knows the lay of the land. That he chose us is on any construction a great sign for the future, and IMO an endorsement for the way we are run and our potential for success next year and beyond. 21 2 2 Quote

Absolutely 'Ethan'... It's crazy what some are posting on here about wow factor and his St Kilda record. He's here as an assistant and he's one of the best in the business. Very highly regarded. What a great get... 6 Quote

It's the same usuals who bask in the constant negativity and tripe. Yep [censored] we've had a [censored] year, but getting someone in the caliber of Alan Richardson as an assistant coachis a huge coup for us. He credited for Port Adelaide rise in 2013 before getting the full time gig in 2014. I have heard people say that ever since he left Port they just never quite got it right due to his huge influence over the group. 8 Quote
dworship 3,343 Posted August 23, 2019 Posted August 23, 2019 My read of the Macca situation was the Snr players were no longer listening/ agreeing with him which may have been influenced by Macca not having played at the highest level. Richardson automatically has an advantage in that area. Quote
Rodney (Balls) Grinter 11,064 Posted August 23, 2019 Posted August 23, 2019 (edited) I seem to recall Alan Richardson always being a very well respected player at Collingwood, due to the way he went about things. Leigh Mathews was full of praise for him in his autobiography, which I would have thought is a pretty good sign of the quality of the guy from a football perspective. I'd also love to prise Voss out of Port as I agree with someone here who thought that he'd be great for our group of young mids in particular. St Kilda were usually a very good tackling team under Richo and I hope he can help get our team back up there in this respect. I noticed in the Swans game in particular, that we allow our opposition to break tackles far too easily on the whole at the moment. Edited August 23, 2019 by Rodney (Balls) Grinter 6 Quote
monoccular 17,760 Posted August 23, 2019 Posted August 23, 2019 Seems a nice sort of guy but just what would his rôle be and where would he fit in the hierarchy? If he can strike up and maintain a good working relationship with Badloss, then it could be a great move: but if Badloss spits the dummy and / or does not accept help from him then next year could be worse than this (if that is possibly). buck_nekkid 6,103 Posted August 23, 2019 Posted August 23, 2019 I think it is a great get. I am intrigued that the role is not released, and that suggests that there is a fair bit still to play out with internal structures and perhaps other signings. I look forward to finding out which other fish we ‘catch’ after the season is done. I hope when the players walk into the club after their break, the whole place is different. Like they have been traded to a professional, even successful organisation. I hope any ‘complacency’ I have been reading about has well and truly been flushed out of the system, and we can set a course for considerably better next year. 1 1 Quote
