The calumny of the AFL's priority pick policy

My mail is really strong that the Suns will not trade any of Pick 1 & 2 and that both Rowell and Anderson want to be drafted together, great mates and more than happy to go to the Suns. The AFL see this as the Brisbane model and a way of genuinely keeping them together at the Suns.

So its pick 3 and we take the best skilled player available the one who is the best kick, probably Young from all reports. The next thing to look at is to see how we can get another top 10 pick.  And i genuinely think this will revolve around Brayshaw. he is currently our most expendable top end talent worthy of trade bait. I believe in the coming days we will hear this to be true and that Braysha ywill very much be  on the table to the likes of Freo, and also St Kilda and possibly Essendon.

Pity it's not Viney on the table instead

Angus will become a very very good player, I don't want to see that in an opposition jumper.

I think Angus is a good player and if i was forced to choose, i would rather keep him i think (although i am constantly changing my mind)

I'm not anti Viney like alot of people on here, i think he is one of a rare player on our list that has that competitive mindset, now it can hinder at times, but i love seeing him in and among st it. Take the captaincy off him and tell him to concentrate on his game. His job on Cunnington was great, People wanting him traded is fair enough, but its never ever going to happen.

Viney is a great Bull, but that is all he is, a tagger (and a good one) and a very poor Captain

Brayshaw is worth much more played in the right position, I hope he stays at least next season. If the team fails next year, then all our talent will Bolt.

Can Brayshaw, Viney, Harmes and Oliver all play in the same side? That's the question we need to ask.

None of them are versatile

I dont think they can, plus we have Tom Sparrow in the wings who is also an inside Mid.  Add Trac to the mix and we have a lot of the same players. You would want Salem to go through the middle as well, Jones is still going to be there by the looks of things.

Harmes played Back on the weekend and looked good, Viney cant play much else but the middle, you want Oliver in there as much,  so maybe brayshaw is the expendable one?

Nah, I saw them play Brayshaw everywhere but his preferred position this year. He was arguably our best player in the second half of 2018 when we gave him full midfield minutes

Yeah we was for sure i agree with you., he is a midfielder for sure, my point is we are not trading Oliver, Harmes wont get us anything decent, Viney a bit the same and he isnt getting traded (whether people want it or not- will never happen) Trac has strings to his bow and Sparrow is an investment, so he is the tradeable commodity, best case scenario is he isnt traded and we keep him and he ha sthe mental fortitude to come back and go to the next level.

That makes very little sense.

An expression of frustration that wasn't meant to be taken literally when almost every post in this thread is a genuine complaint about the AFL [censored] the MFC over.

Right.

So you decide what posts mean???

You'll note my post was the second in the thread, well before "almost every post".

Go away.

What's with the poor me victim. Mentality on here.  The GCS need all the help hey can get and picks 1 & 2 will give them some real currency to trade in some senior leadership which they desperately need. I think the AFLmis doing the right thing by providing GCS picks 1 and 2 and if the difference between pick 2 and 3 is going to hurt us then our problems are much bigger than many think they are.

Prob because apart from last year we haven’t been that much better than Gold Coast for the last decade

Who cares, we made a prelim last year, dramatically underperformed this year, and if we get our act together next year have the foundation to challenge for the next 5+ years. Compare us to GCS, they have lost pretty much all of their best senior players for the past 4 or so years and this year performed as well as could be expected.

To hell with trading Brayshaw. Like most have recognised, he was played out of position for the majority of 2019. Maybe it was because he didn't have the fitness base to stay in the middle full-time due to his lack of versatility.

What i do know is that he is a much better midfielder than Viney. He kicks just as well (or is that poorly?) on his left as Jack and he still has his preferred right foot.

Jack is prone to injury, and he selfishly brings himself back way too early. I know who i'd trade first out of them 2, but it ain't gonna happen.

Bring in Young with pick 3, put him at half back or on a wing and keep Angus in the middle (centre is his position). It's either that or we go after Ben King with pick 3.

I hear what you’re saying but we never quite seem to get our act together. I keep hearing about what a great side we have but on the field it’s generally more shattered dreams. Who knows if 2018 was just a lucky season can anyone say with certainly it wasn’t? We’ve endured another season from hell and if pick 2 nets a significantly better player than pick 3 we have every right to be furious that the AFLs pet basketcase gets it over us...

GC don’t need 2 18 year olds to improve.

They need more mature staff to guide and mould the place.

Not that i think they will survive up there, nothing does. But sending the top 2 draft picks up there is just typical Lazy AFL Rubbish.

They need a change of culture with experienced players in the model of Hodge, Lewis etc coming from successful clubs.  While this might not lead to wins in the short term, it will build stability and set a foundation. This is what happened for us (Twice Barassi and Roos), Sydney in the 90's, Lion's very recently.

They should be made to trade at least one for role model players and those payments are outside cap for those in their late 20s to encourage them to go up there.

Harmes has played back a fair bit for the past month or so and looks good, he's a really versatile mid.  I reckon all of our mids need to be more flexible, e.g. Brayshaw on the wing, Oliver full forward, Harmes anywhere, Viney back and half forward, Salem half back and mid, Trac forward/mid.

It's easy to forget that we have a fairly young midfield group and since the bye they are being challenged to play different roles.

These two new clubs already spent years disrupting the availability of talent for the other 16 clubs with all the concessions they were given at inception. At some point the club needs to own their poor management and stand on their own legs. Trading Pick 2 for Lachie Weller? Delisting Jarryd Lyons? Clubs making idiotic decisions like this don't deserve priority access to elite talent.

What their club actually needs is experience, senior players, mentors like Hodge at Brisbane, and maybe temporary salary cap relief to retain their young talent. Just throwing them another 18 year old for free will achieve nothing; they'll just pack their bags and leave in 12 months anyway.

Create a culture where talent can develop and thrive, and the success will come.

SWYL I agree they need mature players which is why I think picks 1 and 2 provide good currency to trade with. They could potentially turn those two pics into 3-4 A grade players that could provide some leadership. Older sides like Hawthorn, Adelaide, West Coast and Collingwood for example would consider moving on a 24-26 year old or two to get some young talent in and relieve salary cap pressure.

I agree as long as that is the stipulation

If GC just bring in the 2 Highest Rating kids, they are jeopardizing their careers and that is not on

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
