Hey, I’m responding to the fact that you said, and I quote: “Deludio plays Tomlinson doesn't.”, which is patently incorrect.

Haha, you're in your element mate. Do you walk around talking to people in best 22s or do you speak in full sentences?

Due to a Tigers supporter complaining on FB about the Tigers compensation for Branden Ellis, basically being the same that GWS got for Tomlinson, I compared the two. Both went in the same draft and both have had near identical careers, Ellis only averages 5 more possessions and goes at 1.3% better efficiency, but 75% of his possessions are uncontested, prepared to 66% for Tomlinson. I also think Tomlinson’s less possessions are probably due to all the different rolls he’s had to play?

(Maybe I should’ve posted this in the Demons useless facts?) ?

Will be interesting when Clarko tries Frosty on the wing too....and 2nd ruck pinch hit.

Do you actually think before you post, Clarko is a good coach, so with the likes of Smith, Henderson, Impey and Scully who he rotated across the wings this season, he will use Frost and also drop the 2 rucks of Ceglar and Big boy that he went with for most of last season

Nah, was just being a silly bugger. Look, he might not set too many games on fire but I reckon he’ll be a lot more a reassuring presence on the ground than a few of the players we sent out there this year.

I like this acquisition. What many supporters don’t mention is were are average in the air. Both marking and punching. He rates elite in marking for his position. And that can only help us.

Yup, would much rather Ben King too, but Wright might be more gettable, cheaper and should be ready to bloom (23 years old, 66 games, 85 goals). My understanding is Wright's contract ran out at the end of this year.

No worries.

Watching this positioning over 3 GWS games helped me see value to us too. We have struggled on the wings, and I think it's because of lack ofstructure and smart positioning, not because of lack of foot speed (which I think is overrated compared to fast ball movement). This is why we tried "old heads" like Lewis and Jones out there.

2 way endurance running is one of the most important attributes in the modern game but it means nothing if you run mindlessly.

Foot speed is important in so far as a team needs one or two really quick players, but more as an attacking option. And as has been noted by some posters there is different types of speed - burst, 100 metre  sprints and speed over say 300 metres.

But agree the need is over played a bit,  particularly for the wing role Tomlinson will play.

Agree that we struggled badly on that wing position to cover opposition switches etc last season but whilst poor positioning and structure might have contributed I think the key issue was our lack of fitness and elite endurance runners.

Funnily enough (Given he is a key forward) i think this was really exacerbated by the loss of hogan who ran hard up and down the wing.

ANB gets a game because he is one of few players who has the endurance to cover that outside lane and the area between rhe arcs offensively and defensively.

Conversely gus's lack of fitness was exposed in that position (on that i suspect rumours of him carrying an injury last year and that being the reason he did not play as a pure mid are true).

Also agree that Tomlinson represents terrific value for us. Good pick up.

The fact we have not had to give up any picks or players is more than just icing on the cake. It is huge as it helps us in this trade period and potentially means we can draft a higher pick than if we had to haggle for him.

Great posts on this topic deanox by the way.

I watching the AFL player tracker (live player GPS position during matches) during the finals to see where players from top clubs were moving. It was interesting to watch Tomlinson constantly take the "fat side" wing, dropping just behind the play in the hole. His role seemed to be a defensive winger, whose fast movement to position and aerial ability prevented the opposition from switching play, stopped a loose man getting space out the back.

He found his way forward, trying to slip behind defense when GWS attacked: as he was on the far wing, he wasn't making the play but he was forcing opponents to match up on him and defend, so they couldn't be elsewhere.

He isn't a high possession winner but his positioning seemed critical to defending and to providing options in attack.

I also watched him compete against Grundy. Not fantastic but held his own, better than our pinch hitters do.

Hopefully he will help fix one of my greatest bugbears with MFC over  many years, even back to the early Daniher years when we enjoyed some success, that is lack of running and positioning when a player must know that the ball isn’t going to come to him.  I used to refer to it as decoying, drawing at least one opponent away from the coming contest, making space especially for the leading forward.  Whether it was laziness, lack of fitness or poor coaching / game plan I don’t know, but I will watch with interest if this happens.

Have you considered that maybe  Tomlinson / Frost playing is not a binary option?

He's a depth player not a list clogger. If it wasn't for GWS's massive amount of injuries he would have played a lot less games.

Agree on this WD.

Tomlinson was in the last 11 kept of the first draft  by GWS. They let plenty go over the first 8 years and he wasn't one of them. Thus they rated him highly in their future. That,s good enough for me as an indicator

Think, Tyson, Frost  etct, etc,.....

Very impressed with his interviews, very honest, he was sad to leave GWS with his mates but Happy to land at the Dee's..........!!

The FD have got this one right, shows character, reliability and understands his role.

How old are Henderson and Smith.  Clarko has a history of clearing out dead wood just before their use-by date.

Frost is a much more viable 2nd ruck than Brayden Preuss, that is the irony here; apart from the fact the the MFC are the slowest team in the comp, yet clearing their one of their quickest players that had a break-out year.  Ironic that you mention Impey, who along with Saad and other quick players, Melbourne just overlooked or didn't really have a solid go at.

I think before I think before I think before I post....contrary to you lot, who have been applauding the road to failure for decades.

Think x 4 before responding.

He's been tried in the ruck and forward before and failed.

It's just not his go.

If he's going to play anywhere it's as a lock down defender.

Anything else and he's lost, even Clarko can't fix that...

If you understand footy you understand the ball moves quicker than any player ever will.

There's a reason why clubs don't recruit 100m athletes

Not sure why people think tomlinson fills a need. We are the slowest and slowest working football side in the comp so we decide to trade out our quickest player and pick up a slow 6'4 fringe player that is slow on foot but also in the mind with making decisions. Crazy

Use your eyes to assess players. Stats are only there to confirm what you already think or don't think. And for the record, i think Tomlinson is going to be like Oscar Mcdonald playing on the wing.

Frost is not a very good footballer. He is a decent athlete but as a footballer he's not much chop. Why are supporters treating him as if he were Matty Scarlett?
