I think I'm on my own with this, but I don't think the HTB against Max was unreasonable. He chose to take the ball while he was on his back. He also dropped a mark 30 seconds earlier. (Having said that, I certainly dont blame him for the loss.)

Skill errors were murder. 2 that come to mind in Q4 ... Fritsch's kick ... and Hunt running in towards goal and basically stuffing up/turning the ball over. Pretty sad ... it's like they have a death wish.

Overall the game is what it was.

Midfield were really solid. Viney good for a half. Oliver awesome. Gawn better than the commentators made out. Brayshaw did a solid job. Harmes good. Wagner brothers did ok on the wing all things considered.

Backline started poorly then worked in to it. Frost always struggles with Darling who's too  clever for him. Jetta and Lever better and have plenty more to go.

Forward line was a complete rag tag bunch. Petty CHF - ok. Preuss FF - no thanks. Lewis as the 3rd tall stopper - worked amazingly for a half outside the goal kicking. Fritsch excellent, 4 goals and 2 posters. Hunt a great start, needed to go for goal in the last few minutes.

There's a lot to work with. Add Tom McDonald, Melksham and even Weideman to that forward line, a bit of outside run and another classy user through the front half of the ground and we're on our way.

Didn't Max hold that mark and it wasn't paid, or was the same position earlier in the quarter?

What rule is there that says you can't take the ball on the ground?

They are very clear you can't dive on it and you can't drag the ball in under your body but there's no rule that says you can't take it on the ground and move it towards you to give a handball. The Eagles players jumped on Gawn and created the stoppage. Ball it up.

An Umpire who gives a free kick and 50 meters at the same time to the WCE and in front of goal which he kicks because Lever said something is giving  a gimme goal. The Umpire in question uses the number 1. His name is Chris Donlon There are two O's in DONLON and two O's in MORON.

game was symptomatic of our year - our effort was solid throughout but our execution is routinely appalling and we had yet more players suffer injury

i'm half expecting the medical report mid-week to come out and say may has torn his hammy off the bone and petty has broken his tibula / fibula, while viney is suffering ongoing concussion symptoms

it would be right in keeping with the rest of our year

Yep Max held the mark and then it was punched away. Eleni has NFI and te players all sort of stopped waiting for the mark to be paid.

She is a joke and only getting games on the basis of equality. On her merits, she’d be umpiring VAFA Div 5.

Typical. Like a re run from the 70s. Play okay and get done in the last quarter. I thaught we had overcome our mental weakness last year but that was like a panadol during the flu. We are too soft.

Kick our 6-7 easy gimmes and we win easily, despite injuries, umpiring and losing Viney.

Exactly, not only we did miss multiple sitters early (Viney, Lewis x2, Petty x2, Gawn, Fritsch) the Eagles were kicking them out of their [censored].

Umpires were pathetic we got a few our way but overall I thought we were extremely stiff, constantly got blocked out of marking contests, rubbish 50 to Darling, another rubbish free kick to Darling. Still we had enough chances to win.

Saints sack coach on the verge of beating Bulldogs

Have I missed something.....So looking like 3 clubs who have sacked coaches will finish higher than the MFC!

What a Joke we are!

How many Prelims have those teams made in the last 12 months?

Anyone who puts this loss on Goodwin is just plain dumb. He coached well today, it was the execution of the players which lost us the game.

With most of us expecting a loss, probably of an embarrassing size, I can't believe how negative some posters are when we almost pinched the game against a top team desperate to get into the top 2.

BTW, the umpiring in the curtain raiser was far better than the that served up in our game.

He wasn't the only one that missed a sitter in the first quarter, but for a player that has played over 300 games, how did Lewis not realise you needed to kick at the left goal post?

Not only is this a personnel problem (baffling, as under 12s ask which way is the wind going when they take to the field), it is a coaching problem too.

Our poor kicking in the first quarter, when we controlled the play, lost us the game. As simple as that.

I can forgive Vineys miss, hell even Petty due to inexperience especially up forward (even though both his were absolute sodas). But the two misses from Lewis were inexcusable.

Making a prelim doesn’t excuse anything. Grant Thomas got sacked after making the finals. Ratten took the Blues to the finals the previous 3 years and got sacked (which in hindsight was bad).

Goodwin’s Record will be below 50% after this season ends. If we fail to make finals next year I can’t see him surviving.

Sorry Sue but at no stage did I think we would pinch the game. Eagles stepped up a gear in the last.

Let not kid ourselves Eagles were in second gear and just put the foot down when they had to. Being the second worse team is reality irrespective of today effort; injuries and appalling umpiring. The club is in serious trouble slow on the outside; poor skills and non existent forward line. The question is after a rebuild of years how can we be so bad. The constant reference to it will click next year is delusional. This is not just about Goodwin but the systemic issues at the club such as years of failure; lack of quality facilities; poor recruiting and an invisible board. Losing Roos and Jackson has been catastrophic. Beyond Goodwin it is impossible to have any optimism I truly believe next year maybe even worse

Laughable that some on here questioned the FD’s decision not to pick him earlier this season. The least fittest bloke on our list by a mile. Todd Viney would have beaten him in the 3km time trial.

Oh dear, Gonz. Oh dear....

North and Saints have rubbish lists. North was playing finals a few years ago, had a mini crash and is now in finals contention. The Saints have been average for a while but they just smashed a team we never looked like winning against last week.

Carlton have an absolutely putrid list. They currently sit above us, 75% through the season.

Goodwin got a talented list on a role at the time. He and his team list management this year has been utterly awful, bordering on career ending.

I found myself agreeing witu "spud" Frawley, that we've never seen such a significant drop.

This goes far beyond player deficiencies and well into coaching failures. Open your eyes. We are second last ffs. The only team between us and 18th is Gold Coast for [censored] sake.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
