POSTGAME: Rd16 vs Carlton

Gutsy effort considering the lack of rotations. If Carlton were any good, they would have iced the game in the first 15 minutes of the last. It means nothing of course in the sense of the season (apart from more injury woe), but that ISย the win of the season.ย

Donโ€™t know about that but our kicking for goal in the third quarter was our best of the season - 7.1 !!!!!!!!

ย

Should have been 10 goals up. The stats showed we absolutely dominated - doubling their possessions - yet were only 20 pts up.

Watched Weed closely today. Absolutely useless when trying to body his opponent. He is a lead up fwd only.

Carlton supporters are among the worst I have come across

Plonk him at Full Forward and give the defense a question as to who mans him up. Then rotate Max forward occasionallyย

Completely agree. He's aggressive, lanky and unpredictable. Perfect combo to at least get our opposition thinking.

ย

Wow, ย wtf did I just watch. We are atrocious, we have no forward line (Outside of Trac), our midfield canโ€™t hit targets, our defence canโ€™t handle pressure without giving away frees. Now after investing 15 games into a struggling forward, he comes good and cooks his knee. We didnโ€™t deserve that win and probably wouldโ€™ve been best if we didnโ€™t get it

A match againstย Carlton withoutย Cripps, Curnow and McKay is probably biggest gift in footy and we still nearly squandered it.ย Iโ€™m relieved and disgusted at the same time. Happy we got the win with 3 down on the bench, but jeez we shouldโ€™ve been up by 10 goals at 3 qtr time anyway!

How important was Preuss in the ruck 44 HO 14 poss 5 marks a great replacement for Gawn. How good to have both of them playing together ?

With Preuss's performance today he might have cemented a spot in the sideย  for a number of weeks ahead. Goody would have been rapt with his performance as he outpointed Kreuzer.ย

The big fella had 425m gained today, only second behind Fritta. Thought he was great shouldering the ruck on his own. Crash and bash.ย

Should have been happening most of the year GYM.ย ย One can play multiple roles, impacts the game and, as you stated, a difficult match up forward, while the other...?

Have to ask, what was with the awful centre bounces not being called back? At least 3 times Carlton won easy clearances because they were pretty much handed the ball.

Kreuzer was very influential with his round the ground play in the first half. Preuss held his own in the ruck and I see stats wise slightly outdid Kreuzer with disposals.

Preuss' role as I have argued for yonks is to free up Max to play around the ground. Max' hit outs are not much better than Preuss' so it's the midfield that needs to lift.

With Mc Donald out next week if not longer there's lots of time to experiment not to mention for Weideman to justify his re signing.

Kind ofย sums up the season, yeah, yeah, yeahย then just ploop!ย

Could have only been funnier were it a billiards game.

Laugh or cry.

I wouldn't expect him to get too much love on this thread. It would mean a lot of humble pie being consumed.

Goodwin would've needed a change of underwear when the siren went.ย

Preuss just needs a bit more fuel in the tank, which will hopefully get worked into him over the next few weeks.

Hunt needs to believe in himself and go for the friggin' goal when the opportunity is there.

Frost had moments of brilliance and moments of ill-disciplined stupidity that almost cost us the match. Needs to lose that aspect of his game now.

Salem was kicking like some other guy today.

Weid has some serious confidence issues, which have plagued him since that infamous missed goal a few weeks back. Could see him dropped next week, but for who?

Harmes hasn't been his former electric-self for a while now.ย

I'm just thinking out loud here.

Garbage. We absolutely deserved it because we were the better team and wereย limped homeย in the last quarter through grit. Weak assessment.ย

In their defense they had 50 minutes to overcome what was effectively a 7-goal deficit. Whilst also stopping our run. Their intensity in the 4th was unreal and even if we had full rotations, they'd still have staged a comeback.ย

When they got within 5 points,ย I noticed a few things:

1. Oliver stepped it up a notch. He started to control much of our drive.ย

2. It took us 15 minutes to realise but we started playing smart, boundary side football.ย

3. We started winning stoppages. This is important because we were badly down on rotations, and our entire centerline was running on fumes.

The win showed good character but it's not done much to curb my concerns. That said I thought we mildly resembled a finals team in parts during the 2nd and 3rd quarters.

We've won 4 of 6 close games this year. We should have been the Eagles and Crows. But we appear to have forgotten how to really bury teams, an issue that was present throughout 2015-2017.

Max's hit-outs are pretty sublime at times. Not sure I saw too much of that from Preuss today.

What what...say what!!???

So for all those that said Preuss is a dud, i say to you, you clearly have no idea. Well done to the big fella and I hope like hell he plays every game for the rest of the year inย combo with Gawn when he is fit to play again.

Deserved to win? Entitled much? That was the 17th placed team who just had a coach fired and was missing their best players, but yeh we deserved it. With attitudes like this itโ€™s no wonder we havnt won a premiership in 55 years.

not so much this year.. the opposition mids have worked him out.

TBH I don't rate the ruck role that much. It's all about halving the contest

We are poor football club that continues to be so fragile with a lack of mental toughness when itโ€™s needed, driven by poor leadership & culture. Down hill skiers & only want to play one way. Goodwin has unwound defence what Roos instilled. We had 15 goals kicked against a bottom team & have been leaking goals all season. Understand injuries but enough of the excuses as the top sides are faced with injuries & yet find a way!ย

If Macca has done a knee... I reckon the club needs a priest to bless the club & perform an exorcism as we must be cursed with all these injuriesย

Read it again and consider the relative injury impact on both teams. I couldnโ€™t give a flying fig about ladder position. We were the better team of the two on the day. Entitlement is thinking its deserved before the gameโ€™s been played. Stick to your irrational anger though, Iโ€™m sure it works wonders.ย

ย

3 rotations down in the last Quarter and to trail for the first time after being as much as 38ย points up 20 odd minutes in and it looked as though we were dead and buried.

We found something and scratched away picked ourselves up and fought back as it was an amazing last 5 mins.

To see the faces ofย ย the devastated Blues supporters was something. That could easily have beenย me and worse.

When we were staring down the barrel at a loss in that last quarter, I was starting to fantasise about merging with another club with a new name and a fresh beginning.

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
