Weideman is doing enough to stay in the side. 2 contested marks, a goal, an assist. More importantly he brought the ball to ground most times and did some good spoiling. Clearly not a great game, but as a young key fwd learning his craft this is typical. 

If his intensity or effort drop off then drop him. If we improve he will start kicks more goals

    We need to give young players a chance to get games under their belt. This season is finished. We cannot make the finals so let’s at least give guys like Weids, Petty, Baker and Petty as much game time as possible. 

    I know Hibbo and Lever can play. They’ll still be good players if they have another week or two off to fully recover.

    And give Hannan more time to run into form. It's not like Melkie is anywhere near ready.

    We are coming up against a small quick side, Lewis will come in fro Wagner I reckon that will be the only change although Mitch Hannan would want to start getting a kick, if we had a small forward that was capable of coming in he would be dropped

    Petty did alright on Saturday but if Lever is ready he plays Petty doesn't, it's not complicated. Frost, May, Lever is the defencive core and we need to develop them playing together. That said, the club was very careful to suggest the possibility that Lever might be out for more than just 1 week. 

    I actually think Wagner has improved this year and if they wanted to play Salem up the ground I'd be happy for Wagner to stay in and maybe ANB or Hannan come out. Fritch and Salem on the wings and give Baker a run as the high HF.  

    I love Hannan in the side but he just can't get his hands on it, I'd be happy if they persist or send him back for form. Either way I'd like to see Dunkley get a run at some point.

    Make them earn games off good performance, don’t gift them games. 

    I reckon they will drop Hannan. 7 disposals and 0 tackles as a half forward is not a good look.

    Wagner or JKH comes in for him.

    Hannan needs to go back and get his hands on the ball and start providing that manic tackling pressure he is known for.

    I wouldn't drop Baker. ANB, Hannan, Petty, are all way ahead. Even Jones.

    Might help his 'development' more to actually dominate competitive games of footy at Casey, take marks and kick repeatedly for goal. Week after week after week. That would build confidence far more than spending 95 minutes out of 100 simply filling out a guernsey and being disdainfully pushed out of the way by seasoned AFL defenders, which is what's happening now. Just a thought.

    Weideman is not earning his spot in this side. That's not healthy.

    I wonder about this. I suspect the confidence damage of being dropped for any player would be greater than any confidence gained from playing well at Casey. In addition, having watched a few VFL games this year, it is noticeable how different the pressure and pace is compared with the seniors. I am not convinced that playing in the VFL necessarily helps any player make it in the seniors. And the longer they play there, the harder I suspect it is to acclimatise to the seniors once a promotion is achieved.

    I think it’s just as important to give Hibberd, Lever and co maximum time to gel - they’re a bigger factor than Petty next year IMO.

    Also, there’s that assumption again that selecting them this week implies they’re not fully recovered. My read was that leaving them out this week was already conservative as it was.

    Have you seen him at Casey much @Damo?  He's a big bloke, filling into his frame and he's dominated some games down there.  He reads the ball in flight and the game very well,  he generally kicks very well and he has terrific hands both in the air and on the ground.  He's half way through his second year and has so much improvement left in him.

    On Saturday his disposal let him down twice that I saw but I loved his hands under pressure, his willingness to jump at the ball and his reading of the play.  I think he'll be very good for us and will be ready soon.  With Lever, May, Frost and Hore we have decisions to make.

    Does anyone know if he's played forward in juniors? I saw him against Brisbane in the JLT this year and he played relief ruck late in the game and did well.  It made me wonder if he could play forward and relief ruck in the longer term in the seniors.  Just a thought.

    No I havent seen him live at Casey except on the internet.. I do hope he proves me wrong.  I am against us trying to find form by playing in the seniors. Other teams dont do it nearly as much as we do. Look at who we are playing into form at the moment: Weid, Tom Mac, Hannan, Viney, your boy Harry and next week Lever. Looks to me Tracc has been played into form so a tick there.

    Other than Tom and Jack, Id let the other 4 prove it. And although Im a huge fan, Tom Mac isnt back. We saw a glimpse which if you like proves it works. But for 25% of the team? No from me.

    Not so sure about that. I’ve predicted my fair share of goings on that came to fruition over the journey. Trading out of Watts in 2017, Hogan last year, both calls I made well in advance of most. Gary Pert all but declared on Saturday we will be going after a key forward this off season. I’ve been the driver of that conversation on here. Just a few examples there for you. 

    I have little idea how you see things because you never actually comment on anything. Just snipes and put downs from the shadows. I thought an ex-boxer might be a little more courageous than that. Easy to pot, a lot harder to put up.

    Agree with Hannan going back to Casey to get some confidence, but it will be hard to overlook Lewis on his last 2 Casey games.

    Play him HFF on Hodge.

    Another example of reading stats only one way.

    Despite our terrible bombs inside 50, I saw Weid make the contest and spill an easy Freo mark at least 5 or 6 times. Twice that I remember resulting in goals to us, including one to Lockard (double effort) and the Tmac sealer. Both Goody in his presser and Roos on TV made a point of emphasising his work rate.  

    Did you and Range Rover miss this? 

    I think Weid is tracking very well and could become the key forward to build a team around. The more games we get into him now, the quicker his development.

    Its boring seeing posters still bag him as a means of pushing their 'trade the farm for a kpf' agenda (not you).

    Frost is such a different hybrid of a defender. For someone who is 194cm, he has speed of a small running defender and can easily play on the small blokes like Walters. I'd give him first choice on Cameron next week.

    Lever and Hore are brilliant intercept defenders. Something we haven't had since Jared Rivers. Once May and Lever are up and going Hore plays a floating defender In the same way as what Tom Stewart does down at Geelong. 

     

    I agree. Frosty has the pace,  agility  and stamina to go with him . I’m Remembering  his ragdolling of petrocelle a few weeks back. Seems like a strange choice given their different sizes but I can’t even think of who our second choice would be. Jetta is still leaving a hole in this side.

    Manic tackling pressure? Even in peak form Hannan has a good sprint but is far from the best at sticking the tackles and ordinary at changing directions.

    The best of Hannan is decent forward pressure but a versatile attacking player who can get to the right spots to create goals or link up with clever run and carry. And the ability to kick a goal at an important time.

    I'd be inclined to drop him as well but more to get him some easy touches than thinking his pressure is going to drastically improve. The best argument to keep him in the side is he's a natural forward where as the replacement for him wouldn't be. It goes against the idea of keeping continuity in the forward half as well.

    Agree with all points. I thought he played quite well.

    Made some turnovers but jeez so did every other player.

    I liked when he crashed into a dockers player in the air - really committed to the contest. And i liked the mark he took late in the in the last q. Simple but snaffled it. 

    Happy for him to stay in the side, but also happy for him to go back to Casey and keep building. If Lever is ready would seem a natural swap. A good dilemma to have.

    Salem on Cameron? More damaging by foot than Frost

    I can see the argument for dropping him but personally i'd like to see him stay in the side.

    Has not been in great form yet but with 3 (?) games under his belt he will be close now to full fitness and if he clicks i'd rather it happen in the ones not at Casey. At his best  provides a real x factor  and i have a feeling he is a good energy in the team.

On Friday night the Swans will be seeking to rebound from a challenging start to the season, while the Blues have the Top 8 in their sights after their sluggish start. Saturdays matches kick off with a blockbuster between the Collingwood and Kuwarna with the Magpies looking to maintain their strong form and the Crows aiming to make a statement on the road. The Power face a difficult task to revive their season against a resilient Cats side looking to make amends for their narrow loss last week. The Giants aim to reinforce their top-eight status, while the Dockers will be looking to break the travel hoodoo. The sole Saturday game is a critical matchup for both teams, as the Bulldogs strive to cemet their spot in the top six and the Bombers desperately want break into the 8. Sundays start with a bottom 3 clash between the Tigers and Kangaroos with both teams wanting to avoid the being in wooden spoon contention.       And just like that, we’re Narrm again. Even though the annual AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Round which commemorates the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture to our game has been a welcome addition to our calendar for ten years, more lately it has been a portent of tough times ahead for we beleaguered Narrm supporters. Ever since the club broke through for its historic 2021 premiership, this has become a troubling time of the year for the club. For example, it all began when Melbourne rebranded itself as Narrm across the two rounds of the Sir Doug Nicholls Round to become the first club to adopt an Indigenous club name especially for the occasion. It won its first outing under the brand against lowly North Melbourne to go to 10 wins and no losses but not without a struggle or a major injury to  star winger Ed Langdon who broke his ribs and missed several weeks. In the following week, still as Narrm, the team’s 17 game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Dockers. That came along with more injuries, a plague that remained with them for the remainder of the season until, beset by injuries, the Dees were eliminated from the finals in straight sets. It was even worse last year, when Narrm inexplicably lowered its colours in Perth to the Waalit Marawar Eagles. Oh, the shame of it all! At least this year, if there is a corner to turn around, it has to be in the direction of something better. To that end, I produced a special pre-game chant in the local Narrm language - “nam mi:wi winnamun katjil prolin ambi ngamar thamelin amb” which roughly translated is “every heart beats true for the red and the blue.” >y belief is that if all of the Narrm faithful recite it long enough, then it might prove to be the only way to beat the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Sunday. The Lions are coming off a disappointing draw at Marvel Stadium against a North Melbourne team that lacks the ability and know how to win games (except when playing Melbourne). Brisbane are, however, a different kettle of fish at home and have very few positional weaknesses. They are a midfield powerhouse, strong in defence and have plenty of forward options, particularly their small and medium sized players, to kick a winning score this week after the sting of last week’s below par performance.

    • REPORT: Hawthorn

      There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

      At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.
