In the second half Gawn  started to play like his AA form and ended up with 20 diss 8 marks  46 HO  and a goal  from 45 m out. He certainly got the ball rolling.  He was the instigator  and fed all of our midfielders to perfection . Freo's  ruckman  in Darcy  is no slouch however Gawny IMO helped to win the game and was by far the most influential player on the ground.

Much better today from the boys.

TMac - YES! You could see some fire back in the eyes. He's been so down, hopefully today's killer performance will spur him on.

Frosty was awesome out back. In fact, our movement out of defence was so much better. More controlled, thoughtful. May was great in this respect and it'll only get better once Lever and eventually Nev return.

Gawn, huge again. As was Clarry.

He doesn't always execute well, but Lockhart is creative and energetic. Gets into good positions.

As for our leadership. I queried Jack's fitness and leadership last week (more from the perspective of giving him a proper break to let him get his game back together, but he showed a lot today. Real retro Jack performance. Didn't like the leadership shown by Jones in giving away the free though. Liked the passion, but stupid output.

If we can build on today's improvments, we might finally be getting somewhere.

Fox showed the ranking points for the last quarter about half way through and Max was on 72 from memory. That’s insane. Wonder what he finished on for that quarter.

I see according to the AFL stats we almost broke even on centre clearances.

Strange because I can barely remember one good clearance. I raise this because we have the best or second best ruckman and Oliver who is at the top of the clearance specialists.

What I saw was a lot of fumbles and good wide clearances by Freo that were then well defended by our Defence who no doubt won us the game.

Great win and hopefully a good follow up next week against the Lions... Could Preuss get a game..probably not

From what i witnessed...

Freo's clearances were somewhat flattered in the first half by a dominant Fyfe and to a lessor degree Mundy.  After half time Harmes played a fabulous lock down role on Fyfe, limiting his influence and allowing the likes of Clarry, Viney & Salem to work the ball away from congestion a little more effectively with Gawn also getting on top providing a big assist.

Several of our passages towards goals were fantastic. Superb linkage, with our boys actually lowering eyes to find targets. What's more, the execution was much better. A little scrambly at times, where it looked like the last link could have gone anywhere, but that will improve over time with confidence.

Much smarter, more direct, intentional football.

Great stuff.

A much more enjoyable day at the footy. It was one of the best games I have seen Petracca play. Lockhart was fantastic. You have to love and hate Frosty.

I think he finish with 129 points.  Now that is insane.

I heard that too. What were they thinking? Sorry, I just gave Freo fans the benefit of having some intelligence. Silly me.

So there's 3 minutes to go in the last quarter and Gawn marks it out in the open. He decides to play on and gets caught for holding the ball. Freo gather it and gives themselves a big chance to get right back into the game.  Sure, Gawn had a good second half but it's these sort of decisions that cost games. Even social players have better IQ than that. There was only one player that decided to slow it down at the right time and that was Petracca and I honestly think it was due to his basketball background. As basketball players are brought up understanding shot clock/game clock management and strategy.  It's just frustrating that footy players seem so simple in the mind.

What’s with peoples love affair with maxy he was Terrific again and is probably out most consistent player but he makes terrible mistakes like most the team yet nobody seems to notice.

viney was by far our best player today and the best on the ground

I thought Jones First Half was inspirational. He looked fit and firing. He broke tackles, negotiated traffic and got the ball moving forward for us. In the second half I thought Brayshaw and Viney stepped up. Tim Smith, Max Gawn, Jay Lockhart, Sam Frost and Steven May were all vital to our win.

Jones should still be ashamed for that 50 metre penalty. I just watched it a couple of times

shocking to do that

Jones is ageing noticeably; his pace is well down as is high endurance. He is the big offender in terms of the forward line 'bomb' and is more easily frustrated than ever with his game and an opposition's game, and his team's commitment and skills.

Some of these things are reasonable; losing his cool as he did is not a Captain's leadership - a tacit word that directs eyes to the verbal argy-bargy is enough - it is a penalty against the team and was rightly awarded.

Jones' best skill is his evasion with the ball and the link to someone nearby. That is what we really need from him looking forward; yet I expect a great deal of sentimental empathy will go his way across the rest of the season - producing football work that is sometimes good, sometimes quite horrible.

The sunset support that Jones really needs will keep him valuable rather than overt mistakes and moral retributions, like today. Teammates must be near, around him, in a space to receive his quick running evasion and often sensible handball. If he drops forward, he could be very handy in front or near the goalmouth. Jones has always led to space well, ideally finding isolated space.

'Team' qualities are re-appearing; individual  and solo efforts are now a little less frequent. These are good things...

Well there you go.

Didn’t go today due to disinterest after seeing six losses live this year and having 2 x 5 year old kids parties to attend.

I had to remove myself to the front yard at the second party after I shouted ‘PLUGGER MCDONALD!’ during ‘pin the horn on the unicorn’ (metaphorically sums up TMac’s attempts at finding form this year, really) as I hovered in the corner refreshing the afl app.

Now the kiddies are crashed out, couch time and replay.

Nice win Dees, now let’s finish the year stronger and build towards 2020 ??

His evasive skills could almost make up his entire repertoire to the Team both in possession of the ball to feed handballs as Clarrie so aptly has done, or in leading to space to receive from the fwd pocket areas as his short-burst speeds are still excellent whereby few taggers (if allocated) could catch or get the jump on him.

We won...yayyyyyyyy

we managed  to not trip over too many times against a very undermanned walking wounded version of a pretty much so-so team.

We did some things much better...we were still pretty lucky. Today Ill take it.

Tomorrow I'll reflect more and probably think...yeah...we're still bog average...and they were worse.

Finals ??   yeah.....nah !!!

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last
