Collingwood’s work rate and pressure was through the roof in the first half especially in the first quarter. They registered 7-8 smothers in the first quarter alone. It indicates the mind set, hunger and desire. It immediately put us on the back foot, we did well to a degree to fight back and make a game of it until half way through the last but you can’t be chasing tail all day.

How often do we persist with the dinky little kicks that offer no purpose? And they just hang in the air forever. Really frustrating and please stop handballing to a teammate that’s piggybacking an opponent ffs.

They punished our errors like a good team should. ?? to TMac’s miss to bring us within 14. Not saying we would have won the game but it would have made their fans poop their dacks for a while at least.

Watching Max is pure pleasure, not much more you can say really. Even some Pies’ fans recognised greatness today.

Project?

Jack Viney is not a popular member of the team, but some say that the captain isn’t supposed to be.

I say he has elevated to the status he has within the club on the coat tails of his father and others look at him with a degree of resentment

That is complete garbage. Nothing irritates me more than people making stuff like this up. You are a total muck raker.

Breathe...just breathe... I keep telling myself...

16 th vs 3rd, and we played like it.  Honestly, we ‘tried hard’, but had no skill or finesse.  We butchered the ball, and made terrible decisions.

Goody slowed them down after half time, and that manic ‘play on at all costs’ improved a bit.  We simply dont have the skills or talent to play this style ATM.

Some players were simply awful:  TMAC, Jeffy.  Spargo not far behind.  Jeffy is a compete liability, and is responsible for at least one 12 point turn around (his non shot on goal that transitioned too easily).

Fritsch had 2 kicks in a minute from half back and missed both targets by >10 m.  Hopeless stuff.  We tried to switch when it wasn’t on, and got caught out.  Stephenson should have kicked 6.  What, we cant run someone with him to make a contest?  We have to lag 10-15 m behind every time.

I thought May and OBaker were good, Lever improved, Max was simply enormous.  Harmes was good.  VIney did some good things, and some pathetic things.  He is in the clear and kicks it straight to a Puss-filth-scum defender all on his own.  Really?  We had players open of that could have made a contest.

We are so far back at the moment.  Time to cut out the crap and being in some new blood.  Rest TMac if you have to (Goody says he will persist).

Early umpiring was confusing both ways.  Would have been better if the maggots had not decided that they needed to be important.

I wonder if there’s resentment against him amongst the players? He was made captain very early and partly because his father was a club champion. He made silly, holier than thou statements about May who had a couple of beers with mates. He’s hard at it but his decision-making is not great and his kicking is not straight.

I wondered the same thing. He has been over rated as a complete player since the day he walked into the Club. If I was a forward I would be very resentful of the praise he gets for shocking disposal into the forward line.

We played some pretty good footy at times today.

Now … I reckon .... we only need to learn how to kick, mark and handball … and we'll win a few games.

Good piont Uncle, unfortunately you tend to learn these things in u12 s... not when pulling BIG WAGES and not delivering on performance. Our Judgements, Skills and Rudiments are not even second rate..... They are Z Rate.

Just look at how nonchalant Collingwood executed skills under pressure, set up well and finished magnificently.

WE HAVE NONE OF THOSE ATTRIBUTES

Gawn and Harmes were brilliant.

Unfortunately, our midfield (with the exception of the two aforementioned players) doesn't know how to defend in transition. Until we fix this, we won't be a top 8 threat, let alone top 4 threat.

Petracca is trying his guts out but IMO the coaches have completely ruined his confidence. He looks to pass off at every opportunity inside 50 and has done, since last year's ridiculous review of a single selfish effort.

Goodwin is not going to make it as a senior coach unless he bites the bullet at the end of the season and changes the game style. Simple as that. We also need fresh ideas and fresh coaches to implement them next year.

We need Salem, Fritsch and KK all playing forward of centre / on the wings. Our ball use going inside is still ridiculous and is rarely to the advantage of the forwards.

We need genuine crumbers in our forward half with speed. Jeff is done. He's too soft and inconsistent. He is the only genuine crumber we currently have. I hope we're scouring the country for a couple of speedsters with an ability to crumb.

We need another genuine KPF to support Weideman. Tom McDonald is a good second or third fiddle, nothing more. The way things are going, both McDonald's will be off our list at the expiry of their current contracts, but I thought Weid showed some good signs today.

I think we'll struggle to win 5 games this year. It's all well and good to say our kicking was off, so it wasn't lost in the coaches box, but we have such little system to our play that it's time the blow torch was put fairly and squarely on Goodwin and co IMO.

I agree with Petracca looking pass it off but this for mine has only been in recent weeks. I put this down to his inability to convert simple set shots. Great players demand the ball and kick the goals when they’re there. Today’s effort just highlighted where he’s at. I agree he’s trying but he’s clearly not what we thought he’d be. He has no excuses he’s just not that good. I’m happy for him to be traded to improve our list come years end.

How the complete F is Spargo getting picked ahead of... ANB, Stretch, JKH, Lockhart, Preuss, ... anyone else fit

He's been pathetic the last 3 weeks, it was obvious to everyone, and he's picked again and puts out a totally shouse effort for most of the first half

Seriously, he's not up to AFL standard and I don't care that he got a few kicks in a team that was winning last year... That's the definition of a downhill skier!

Spargo compared with:
JKH: has a longer future (by default) better tank and really no worse disposal. So he was set to the tagging wing role on Phillips, then moved forward
ANB: He's a disaster right now,  two head knocks recently, needed the run at Casey
Lockhart: Missed time with a knee, isn't a huge endurance athlete, reasonable that they gave him a game at Casey. I would've put him straight in but I get it
Corey Wanger: yeah/nah

The reality is we need more talent but also more guys who are willing to run hard and to the right spots. Spargo's 17 touches and good pressure numbers show he did all the right work today, just very ordinary with the ball/contest.

I really do believe it is untenable having your old man in a position of power at the club.

Viney JACK needs to relinquish the captaincy and Todd probably needs to reassess his position also!

The Silvagni factor is not dissimilar!

I have defended petracca at the start of the season due to lack of fitness, then a few poor games called for a change of role. But failing to kick for goal and trying to pass it is a coach driven practice. Ive read in a past article where our plan is to put it in "the hot spot" in front of the square as this is where the highest percentage of accurate goals is kicked from. Goodwins huge on numbers and the plan is to get  it to someone in this position. For a forward flank petracca meets the pass mark. Sad as i hoped ge would be much more.

Weids looked pretty good in the last when he was hit up on the lead. Encouraging.

Oliver was at his most damaging tonight. Unfortunately it was his defensive attributes that were damaging us because he follows the contest and allows his opponent (trelore) to position himself as the outlet with no pressure.

The kick was a hack pass, he can’t tackle, there was other times his disposal was poor today. If today was a pass to the coaches then there lies the problem.

We're you there?

He was uncompetitive for the first half! And had a disposal efficiency of 46%

It was embarrassing

If your argument is potential, then develop and prove that in the 2s, not on the main stage.... Baker is 3 games in and showing his potential which was developed in the 2s

Coaching group need to spend the bye having a review.

-  skills deplorable / poor decision making

-  no forward line connectivity

-  players not developing / not fit enough

-  game style (frenetic / pointless) ball movement exposed every week

-  no improvement over 12 months to the above

-  keep making wrong selection calls -  Spargo

They're too arrogant to do reviews

Understand Goody has to remain positive but out game plan is not working.. getting slaughtered on the outside & can’t take a mark inside 50 & we butcher the ball.

I actually thought JKH wasn't all that bad last week!!

Spargo of his 17 disposals many were insignificant.

If he is the future then we really are in strife. Lucky but good goal, but very little else.

Jeffy?? Gee almost got it a few times but looks totally devoid of any confidence and he CAN play!!

Leadership is shown.

Its tough being a captain and while jack has leadership attributes he doesnt show enough in performance on the field to someone like Max.

Id really like to know what is holding back some of our players.

I had assumed Petracca and say Spargo have not had injuries which may or may not be true. I dont think Traccs knee has held him up much this year. Harmes has come good after his badly broken and dislocated finger in round one. I think Tracc and Spargo could be leaner and fitter.

I think Tmac and Jack Viney are playing injured but to what degree i have no idea. Id say they are willing themselves onto the park. If thats so, how come they seem to attend and complete training?

Is Hannan playing still injured? Is Oscar incapacitated or just not much good?

If anyone can point me to information on the above Id be grateful.

If you were a forward we'd give you a game as we're desperately short on them!

Back on Jack, this is the same guy who had highest disposal efficiency and second highest tackle count, 8 contested possessions??

There's plenty of guys to pot before him! Start with Spargo would be my suggestion, then onto Garlett ... TMac... Fritsch ....

I thought we were a chance to pinch it in the last , but we kicked 4 points in a row when we were only 3 goals down and I’m just wondering when the hell are we going to wake up from this bloody nightmare of butchering the ball inside 50?

I disagree that we need to change the game plan as I thought we won the midfield battle, just that all our hard work often goes unrewarded.

I feel sorry for guys like Maxy who absolutely busts a gut every week.

Nasher, i couldnt agree more, while ive been guilty of emotional posts in the past, i can not understand how fans question how viney is co captain, goodwin may have handled it better with jones, but no one questioned his leadership capabilities at the time and most thought it was a good introduction for him as co caprain with very few saying he could learn the same as vice, not because of viney but because they didnt like co captains. Before jacks injuries he was being compared to selwood and was looking at taking the next step. Ability wise and leadership wise. Were fans saying he was being favored because of todd after the geelong and hawthirn finals last year?

His disposal had improved before his injuries, still his lack of a right foot would have held him back at some stage. Tonight, he looked for a handball or a short kick out of a contest. Hes coming back from injury, and may never get back to what he was becoming, or even what he was, but the fact hes changed his style and is working on these weaknesses is exactly what you want, . Jones was horrible at this, but during his best years lowered his eyes and hit targets going forward, as his yime is coming to an end he is returning to his early ways of bombing it forward. Often happens with ageing players, but i highly doubt any of these forwards are resentful to these two.

This talk of jack riding on todds coattails is utter fiction.

Jack like the other mids gets the best armchair ride in the competition. Disposal efficiency is generally poor and when good is 30 metres on average. Yeah, yeah to the tackles, we have always know that. What other Captain would broadcast one minute before the game our plan is to start fast. Just like Trengove and Grimes made Captain before fully developing his own game. Agree on the likes of Spargo,  You can have Hannan too, always been NQR.

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
