He’s a good assistant with a schoolteaching background. Doesn’t mean he doesn’t have fresh ideas - it just didn’t translate into the top job. He’s not a leader of men into battle. He’s a cuddler. A 2IC. Good cop to the bad cop.

Not sure any AFL coaches are leaders of men into battle, given none of them hold positions of leadership in the military.

A 'battle' is  not exclusively defined as pertaining only to military conflict.

I don't know that good bloke factor is what a club needs sometimes (not that Mitchell isn't). But he does bring is a winning mindset, a winning resume and highline footballing IQ. He's also a natural leader. Some might not like him but everyone would respect him. Big difference when a guy like Mitchell eyeballs you with directions, someone who's fought in the trenches and been to the Summit of football four times.

Congratulations on using both a war and a mountaineering metaphor in the one sentance. However neither have any real link to the game of football.

FWIW I've heard suggestions that Mitchell can be a bit of a [censored], which would certainly affect his impact on any group.

Metaphors can have a link to anything if you use them appropriately enough. That's why they're metaphors.

Also, it's sentence with three e's.

Of course he's abit of a [censored].
Tackled with his knees and like Ablett bumping with his elbows it was just a poor technique.

Shame you didn't, teacher.

Now now, metaphors can mean whatever one like's remember?

Sam Mitchell has fought in the trenches, obviously. He's dropped the soap with the boys, got blood on his hands, been around the block a few times, been bent over a few barrels, and even been chewed up and spat out.

Dude's had a rough time, gotta give him that. Don't know if it makes him coaching material though!

You mean like I metaphor a drink, and she continually laughed at my ideas about footy

Is McArtney, Paul's brother, coz that's the way I pronounce it

As an ex military person, footy has no resemblance to it whatsoever

It sticks in my craw, everytime I see the drivel they produce to advertise the Anzac game

An example of 2 great players who 'climbed the mountains' and 'fought in the trenches', but failed spectacularly as coaches, Voss and Hird

Sheedy, Malthouse, Matthews, Blight, Worsfold, Thompson, C.Scott, Longmire, Hardwick Simpson. Hell chuck in R.D.Barassi while we’re at it. Cheers.

If anything, you're just proving the opposite of your point - given how many great players there are, that's a tiny list. In reality, very very few great players go on to be great coaches.

With the Blues in turmoil and likely another rebuild or major reno under a new coach in 2020, Jones in his twilight years and on the verge of retiring, is it time we got our own version of a Dusty type to add to our mid field stocks?  Just might be the tincture of tenderness needed to create our Milton and win the big one! ...

Maclure is being hysterical...surprise.

The Carlton list is in a good position and with the right coach will turn it around quickly.

They don't need a major rebuild, just time, a good coach and a few targeted acquisitions.

Fully agree Saty, it completely irritates me every time I see the 2 linked together. It is usually compared by those who have no military experience.

I have no military experience but it certainly irritates me too.

19 of the past 29 premierships have been won by coaches who previously won premierships as players. 66%.

Satyricon gave 2 examples, I countered with 12  Add David Parkin to the list.

I was going to say affecting, but then I agree, it could effect something in you.

Perhaps needless pedentry?

[this is a joke post, without metaphors]

Two opposing forces engaging in combat. Close your eyes and really think DD. The metaphorical link will eventually crystallise and make sense.

Yes had they won the two against GCS and the Hawks Bolton might still be coaching Rjay.  I thought they weren't far away either.

Wonder what Cripps thinks about the latest goings on though.  Might be gettable.

Edited by Rusty Nails

i disagree - carlton's list is a hodge-podge mix that is pretty average

  • too many tall defenders who lack strength (jones is easily the best of an average bunch, marchbank, weitering, plowman, plus goddard as a rookie)
  • too many poorly skilled mids (as good as cripps is he's a terrible kick for the most part, dow is an awful kick, sps is super average, and fisher is tiny and not skilled enough to make up for it, matt kennedy and setterfield more failed gw$ recruits)
  • too many tall forwards who don't like body contact (mcgovern, curnow, mckay, and to a lesser extent kerr, who won't make the side while the other three are around)
  • no real small forwards providing defensive pressure (pickett and garlett are the only ones and they're perma-crocked, while silvagni at least tries to tackle but just gets brushed aside by bigger and smaller oppo)
  • too many injury-prone veterans (murphy, daisy, kreuzer, casboult, simpson and docherty is not old but hasn't played for coming up three seasons)

the likes of walsh, dow, weitering, o'brien, fisher and stocker should be good, but how many times have we said that about kids who show something in their first year?

if i was plucking the eyes outta the blues list there's not many players i'd be super keen on:

  • cripps
  • walsh
  • mckay
  • charlie curnow
  • marchbank
  • maybe weitering, fisher and sps
  • jones as a veteran, but he's no better / worse than frost, really
  • o'brien, stocker you have no real idea on them at this point

the rebuild continues on and they have adelaide's first round pick in 2019 and then nothing til the third round

Unfortunately yes.

With the talent they have, they should have jagged some wins against good sides on days when it all "clicked".

That they haven't says everything you need to know about Bolton. Surprised it took this long.

In the context of your sentence, that's exactly how it reads. You can argue semantics all you like, your metaphor is poor at best if this was not your intention. I will call out the likening of a game of football to the horrors of war every time I see it because it is a ridiculous modern day sentiment among football commentary I am sick of hearing. Give it a rest.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Collingwood

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

  • AFLW REPORT: St. Kilda

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
