Jack Viney had scans yesterday. I believe he has avoided shoulder surgery, but will miss a couple weeks. Not ideal timing for Demons fans. But I guess it could have been worse

That makes yet another Casey player to stand up and be counted . Is it possible we could catch a break insteadย of yet more injuries?

No. If the quality ain't there it ain't there.

Why avoid surgery? Just give him surgery, get him right proper and prepare for 2020 opposed to trying to keep him on the park throughout a wasted season

Agreed.

It will also allow him to get his foot right too.

If he has season ending surgery, when he could just have it now, after a 1-5 start to the year I just won't know what to think. But can see it happening being a Melbourne supporter.ย

Hopefully the fact that he's only missing a couple means there's nothing structurally that needs fixing.

ย

He has been NQR all season. It will be like for like. Ordinary player replacing ordinary player.ย

Is Maynard the obvious replacement at this stage? He is the only one I can think of. I think Tracc should move to the midfield, along with Melksham, for the next couple of weeks.ย

Or Sparrow.

The standard he has beenย playing he won't be hard to replace. I don't think it matters who gets a go at doing the job. The reality is Viney is no longer reliable and on the park enough to not require an understudy or two. Another bad coaching decision to not have a plan B for him.ย It is about the only thing stopping Jones from getting dropped. I remember saying to someone a couple of years ago that I did not think he had a lot of footy in him because of the way he plays and his body not holding up. That said, his desire and determination will be hard to replace.

Good call. I'd forgotten him. Time to get the youth involved. What is James Jordan up to? Is he a chance to play a few games before the end of the season? I know he had an interrupted pre-season.ย

He was off for about 20 min after the knock in the last quarter ie about 16% making him available to play for a max 84% time.ย  But he played only 59% of that, having the equivalent of a full quarter off in the first 3.

Certainly looks like he was being nursed.ย ย  Playing him underdone just puts pressure on other players especially mids to cover his work load.ย  Very tiring for a midfield that lacks fitness.

Bring in someone who can at least play 80% game time.

Good time for a rest/surgery.ย

I still can't work out whether Viney took on Stack thinking he could run straight through him, or was completely oblivious to his presence. Either way it was extraordinarily poor football.ย

I agree with other posters - if there is any thought that Vineyย could benefit from having surgery, just get it done. He has had little influence to date, so we will hardly be worse off getting games into a kid.

Melk was a turnover king on Weds night probbably as a result of more time in the middle.ย  Would rather he plays HF pushing high (wide) and/or off the wing where he theoretically has more time / space to execute.ย  One of our best kicks coming i50 also so wouldn't hurt.

Maynard's the obvious direct replacement as an insider but are we better off bringing in someone with a bit more outside speed and run going to HFย if Tracc is playing as the insider?ย  Not sure there's anyone like that (in any decent form) at Casey

He definitely tried to take it on. 99% of players in the league would have side stepped it which was the smart thing to do and would have been beneficial for the team. Almost feel sometimes Viney is just out there to show how tough he is rather than actually play football and help his side win.ย

We donโ€™t need courageous acts that amount to nothing. We need match winners and thatโ€™s what a captain should do.

Yes, Viney's football IQ is limited to being tough and never taking a backward step. A very valuable attribute but with an obvious downside.

It's a split second decision.ย  If he didn't take him on half of D'land would be up in arms accusing him of squibbingย it.

Would take a goer in the team any day over someone who blinks.

Hardly poor football.ย  Just part of the game.

Has Maynard been playing? Didnโ€™t play last week and is not named this week either for Casey?ย

Personally, Iโ€™d bring Sparrow in,ย give the kid a few consecutive games and see how he goes. Misery continues, unfortunately Maynard isnโ€™t the answer going forward. Maybe Jones back in the centre square now.

Maynard is the ultimate hack bomb forward kick guy. Very poor skills. Iโ€™d rather play Sparrow or another kid

Isn't that the ideal replacement for Jack? โ˜บ

Maynard's skills inside aren't that bad.ย  He will probably run as well through there as chunk would at this point...possibly better.ย  Similar bombing also lol

He had a millisecond mate.

He didn't see him until the last split second as he did what most MFC players wouldn't, and that is keeping his eye totally on the ball.ย  Extremely poor football?ย  No, extremely poor commentary from you.

ย

Viney is bloody tough considering he just got up and didn't even grimace.ย  I have whinged more about a biting my tongue.

To those calling for surgery now youโ€™ve clearly never had an AC injury. They vary in scale.

If you donโ€™t need surgery, you donโ€™t do surgery.

Ummm... perhaps because he doesn't NEED to have surgery?ย  99% sure it's just the journo's phrasing, not because the MFC is trying to avoid surgery. ?ย

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterdayโ€™s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown andย  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
