yeah look I know where you're coming from, but I just think Spargos main problem is he hasn't got the tank yet for strong repeat efforts. I wouldn't lose faith in him just yet.

interesting thoughts on playing Sparrow as a defender. has he played there in u18s? it could be worth a look either way, as we do need to find some strong half back types to give us some drive out of defence.

He has played defence...I would be looking at him as a long term replacement for Nev...

Strong, has some leg speed and aerial ability.

Smith and Keilty may well assist the Weeds game, show him how it is done. Playing all three up fwd may be a bonus for us.

Given Hawthorn's KPF stocks are pretty thin, I wouldn't be bringing in another defensive tall. I'd be looking at more pace for the likely Hawthorn spread on the G. 

I'd be looking at Spargo or Sparrow to replace Jack. Spargo is probably the more likely.

 

Yes, we must counter Whorform's spread, both sides. It is good either fwd or back. An assignment for a Wagner and Sparrow, and others?

both similar types - can play a good quarter but have trouble sustaining the effort over a whole game.

Preuss, with a body well-placed up fwd against Whoreform (and an attitude for careful aggression) may make a difference and certainly, should take one or two defenders to control at each engagement. I note that Goodwin's "buzzword" over the last few weeks has been "connection". He seems to be saying that he's happy with the effort but with so many new players and perhaps a new game plan forced by the 6-6-6 rule change, the players haven't yet worked out how to play together. If it's "connection" that Goodwin is looking for, then keeping the group as stable as possible would seem to make sense, making changes only when the injured best-22 become available. 

I can never work out whether Weideman is in the wrong spot or whether we deliver the ball poorly to him. Either way, I'd like to see him continue in the firsts where the problem - that lack of connection - can be resolved.

I don't have a problem with Weideman being out form, it's the way he's playing, wouldn't lead at the ball carrier, wouldn't push up to provide an outlet for teammates coming out of defence and don't mention what continually running under the ball may be a symptom of. Always just seemed to be hanging around the forward 50 arc not getting involved. Needs a rocket.

Surely running under the ball is the fault of the person kicking to him, isn't it?

Ir is a balance thing. Leading directs the kick - to space but that kick must also be read accurately to continue the 'connection'. It takes practice; firstly, to be seen by the ball deliverer and secondly, to know more about that feeder's kicking styles, distances of possible kicks to receive and the identification of the spatial requirements to take an effective possession/mark. It is also a perfect training drill involving all forwards and the midfielders - obviously (but not confirmed) - left largely unpractised at MFC training. Knockout feeds produce knockout goals.

Running under the ball is the fault of the person kicking it to him, ON A LEAD. There really isnt much evidence for this one way or the other. He doesnt lead that way and the forwards are not looking for it. Wingards fantastic kick to a forward in expectation that he would swivel and lead up was one of the smartest pieces of footy Ive seen this year. Brilliant. Standing under a bomb coming from 5 floors up is not a great strategy unless you are relying on paying the man in front.

i think its all timing and a a good forward coach could teach him this. With all due respect to our fwd line coach im not sure they were a key position player ironically maybe not even a forward.

I agree with the last 3 posters, but i also think that Weid isn't reading the poor kicks well enough. And when the kick is poor (most of the time), we want to see an effort to at least make it a contest with the man who was pretty much hugging him to taking an uncontested mark as he read the poor kick better. I think that's the problem (Vlaustin - however it's spelt, reads the ball so well). Weid needs to improve and make it a 50/50 contest like a lot of the team.

At some point we need continuity. There's no point dropping 5 each week if when you look at every player individually, 75% of them wouldn't have held a spot last year at their current output. Singling out certain players and replacing them with underdone or unproven VFL players gives us nothing, short term and long term. 

Some people want blood each week, and I get that, but you can't pour from an empty cup. We already have most of our depth players featuring regularly this year due to injuries and what not. 

Our problem is fundamental across the whole playing group right now, and as a group they need to find a way out of this mess. Random appearances by middle tier Casey players will not help the group heal and move forward.
