I am not that arrogant that I won't admit when I am wrong. I was wrong when I said we will be Carlscums first win, we will be just one of their wins.

Pace, skill and a reasonable gameplan, yep they have that.

I’ve already got flights and accommodation for the Hawks game and Queens birthday so I’ll be going regardless.

I made the comment last night that besides AVB and Hannan who are we missing when we won rd 22, 23, elimination and the qualifying. Whilst their not stars they are important to our list and their respective roles late last year.

Could someone please explain how the new 666 rule is killing us? I think it’s a non issue, we win plenty of clearances at centre bounces. Our entry’s into fwd 50 and ability to keep the ball in there are far bigger issues.

Ive never bought into the “it takes years to learn a game plan”, our players (the majority) can play. Clearly it’s not working so change it up. Tigers beating Port last week showed every team what is possible.

At least they didn't send out an email asking us to buy finals tickets when wont be making finals.........

I'm reluctant to post but I will give it a go.

Last year when we were winning the game was a lot slower paced. There were a lot more contests, and ball ups etc. That is where we excelled. Like you said we are still winning the ball

The biggest difference as far as I can tell is that the 666 allows fast scoring. We can not send extra players to contest at ball ups any more basically meaning the game has sped up. For example last year we were sending 2 or 3 from the back line to the centre contest, which you're not allowed to do now. This slowed the game up

So what does that mean? It means the game is more open. We are getting exposed in transition for a lack of pace - we are too slow, and our ball use is terrible so we can't retain the ball. Other teams just sit back and defend, wait for us to turn it over and out run us.

This was a problem last year as well, but we found a way through contests to slow it down.

Now it isn't as all as simple as that, but that's basically how I see it.

We won't get any better until we improve our defensive set ups (Lever and May come back) and we need pace all over the ground. We have too many slow, poorly skilled one pace players, too many inside mids, all our talls are slow.

Our inside 50 efficiency is embarrassing, teams are consistently out running us, teams score so easily against us because we defend so high and we are too slow or we turn it over in really bad spots.

Jones cops a lot on here but at least he is willing and able to provide run which isn't his natural go.

Anyway there is a lot of work to do for this group, I honestly can't see them getting better this year. We are too slow and too portly skilled.

Thank you AFL for opening the game up and keeping the big teams up the top. (although I am happy to see the Suns and Saints win a few games)

And I agree with @Redleg the Blues will beat us easily

...and I still say the drop off happened last year in the Prelim.

Nothing has been done to change the obvious short comings that blind Freddie could see in that game.

I must credit Geelong with using their loss against us in the final as a huge wake up call. They reviewed, took no prisoners and worked hard in the off season to change their game plan, positioning and personal and now have a crack at another flag.

We on the other hand just excused the performance as not being the real us.

Problem is, it was the real us...and now we're repeating the same mistakes.

Maybe it was a bad time for a changeover of CEO, with Jackson leaving, Mahoney applying for the job and Pert yet to come on board...the prelim performance fell between the cracks. We dropped the ball...

Now we know that CEO's shouldn't meddle too much with the FD but either the head of football, Mahoney or the CEO should have seen that a thorough review was taken after that loss. That is in their job descriptions.

Then of course the warning signs were there for all to see in the preseason competition but most couldn't see them. Those who questioned the performances were said to be over reacting, or told don't worry we got this it's just the JLT games.

Wrong...

Time for a thorough review and a turnover of the FD...

Agreed. Have thought exactly the same

Jeelong learnt. We had Cocktails ?

lol an email?

Can someone post what was in it?

Thankyou Footscray, dubious honour usually reserved for us

Why don't we have anyway at the front/drop of a marking contest? All of our/opposition defenders tend to punch forward. Oppo take the possession and off he goes. Frustrating that other teams learn/do this and we can't.  Hey just one aspect of the way we play, but it's my biggest frustration.

I couldn't watch the whole game yesterday but three things did stand out:

The ball still comes out of our forward line quicker than it goes in with almost no resistance. This has been a failing for more than 2 years and, sadly, I have come to the conclusion that it is a coaching issue. More inside 50s for fewer scores and a 40 point loss is totally unacceptable. Geelong was worse. Fix it or get a new coaching panel.

Twice I saw the ainters tall forward successfully fly for marks against Hibberd and Fritsch who were both too short to compete. There was no one taller in the backline to compete. How could the selectors allow this to happen. Fix it or get a new selection panel.

I was staggered to see Gawn and Preuss compete for a mark in the backline against the point post. WTF????. How could this happen?? This is not the way to play two giant rucks. Who was meant to be up the ground as a target to relieve the backline pressure? If that's the best two ruckmen plan, then fix it or get a new coaching panel/selection panel/gameplan panel. The current ones don't work.

It is now clear that all opposition teams have figured us out and are playing to negate our strengths and punish our weaknesses. Pious and serious statements of greater intent and effort no longer have any currency. The only currency worth having is success.

As always, I say 2020.

Go dees.

Seriously embarrassing - WTF - an email ! nobody in their right mind wants an email from these plodders

I cringe when I recall interviews before the season started they genuinely thought they were a shoe in to make finals and be a serious threat - DEElusional

so far off the pace it’s not funny with no real light at the end of the tunnel

Business as usual at MFC - brief glimmers of hope always quashed mercilessly - it’s been this way for 50 + years - can’t see it ever changing

Have we reviewed the Perth final yet?

Seems like we didn't learn anything then and we are still being beaten the same way....

They are reviewing it on Queen’s Birthday while the Pies tear us a new one.

My main question, how much time some have on their hands or very little in their lives,  to post the same thing over and over again, as if it will change anything

It's footy we were poor and got beaten, move on to next game

Personally I think it was Checkers fault, only one not to get a name check

I can just see Goodwin before the game

'Ok boys I want basic skill errors, a lower work rate that the opposition across the board and no connection between the defence, mids and forwards'

Yep this club has been all talk and no walk for an eternity. Just shut up and do your jobs you overpaid hacks.

Maybe Saty some of us are hurting more than you. Sorry if you find that funny or strange.

My main question is how good is our list ? At the start of the year champion data rated it as #1 I think

At the time I thought that was a huge stretch of the imagination and really based on what exactly ??

I look through this team and see a few decent players but the vast majority just seem massively overrated

Do you actually watch games or just go to training?

Do you actually care whether the Team wins or loses? I don’t think you do..

“move on to the next game” was exactly what you have said since Neeld was imploding...

I'm furious at May's lack of preparation coming into a new club

He's a mature age recruit that knows the system - wtf?

Yet, so many on here stroke his furrowed brow and coo, 'there, there'

No quality small forwards who have crumbing front & square smarts.  A bit of burst speed to burn off an opponent or any goal sense.

Getting Jeffy back in and performing might help but apart from him that's abaout it at the MFC sadly.  Our small forward stocks are shizen houzen.  Preuss (when he's fit and in) is handy as he offers a get out deep for smalls to work their craft off and score.  The trouble is we have no one to compliment his size and work (getting the ball to ground) so in many ways unless he is kicking around 2 goals or so himself in most matches, with our list, he becomes a bit of a liability (back up ruck relief for Maxy aside)

Don't you want to see Carlton and Freo duking it out at the G? Do you even like Aussie rules???????

It's partly a player / personnel issue (lack of outside runners / class / finish and quality smalls) but mostly a coaching / FD lead problem Sydee.

I would not be too harsh on the team as a whole.  There is effort by most and for me a there was a lift in that effort/output last week and y'day.  Some are playing within their own limitations and others badly out of form due to the injuries etc pre-season.  Sure some aren't up to it and may never be.  Others coming towards the end of their careers.  But it is without doubt the limitations of the coach and his panel as well as the list itself (which the players had no say in), which are having the biggest impact on our performances since the Prelim.

  • PREVIEW: Richmond

A few years ago, the Melbourne Football Club produced a documentary about the decade in which it rose from its dystopic purgatory of regular thrashings to the euphoria of a premiership victory. That entire period could have been compressed in a fast motion version of the 2025 season to date as the Demons went from embarrassing basket case to glorious winner in an unexpected victory over the Dockers last Saturday. They transformed in a single week from a team that put in a pedestrian effort of predictably kicking the ball long down the line into attack that made a very ordinary Bombers outfit look like worldbeaters into a slick, fast moving side with urgency and a willingness to handball and create play with shorter kicks and by changing angles to generate an element of chaos that yielded six goals in each of the opening quarters against Freo.

  • NON-MFC: Round 07

Round 7 gets underway in iconic fashion with the traditional ANZAC Day blockbuster. The high-flying Magpies will be looking to solidify their spot atop the ladder, while the Bombers are desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top eight. Later that evening, Fremantle will be out to redeem themselves after a disappointing loss to the Demons, facing a hungry Adelaide side with eyes firmly set on breaking into the top four. Saturday serves up a triple-header of footy action. The Lions will be looking to consolidate their Top 2 spot as they head to Marvel Stadium to clash with the Saints. Over in Adelaide, Port Adelaide will be strong favourites at home against a struggling North Melbourne. The day wraps up with a fiery encounter in Canberra, where the Giants and Bulldogs renew their bitter rivalry. Sunday’s schedule kicks off with the Suns aiming to bounce back from their shock defeat to Richmond, taking on the out of form Swans. Then the Blues will be out to claim a major scalp when they battle the Cats at the MCG. The round finishes with a less-than-thrilling affair between Hawthorn and West Coast at Marvel. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Fremantle

For this year’s Easter Saturday game at the MCG, Simon Goodwin and his Demons wound the clock back a few years to wipe out the horrible memories of last season’s twin thrashings at the hands of the Dockers. And it was about time! Melbourne’s indomitable skipper Max Gawn put in a mammoth performance in shutting out his immediate opponent Sean Darcy in the ruck and around the ground and was a colossus at the end when the game was there to be won or lost. It was won by 16.11.107 to 14.13.97. There was the battery-charged Easter Bunny in Kysaiah Pickett running anyone wearing purple ragged, whether at midfield stoppages or around the big sticks. He finish with a five goal haul.

  • CASEY: UWS Giants

The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.
