Believe there may be issues between Martin and May adding to the mix

That makes sense.

Playing with your mate Eddie Betts doesn't seem like a strong enough reason to completely dispel talking to another club

Wonder if MFC knows this too and is the reason they said if he's not interested neither are we?  May and KK would have been the first people they spoke to

Prefer to take Bennell a cheaper risk with a higher potential

Nailed it much? I couldn't imagine an inconsistent footballer with unfulfilled potential getting along with a serious full back for a captain that demands accountability and players knowing their role.

Source? Quite the speculation buddy. Where is this rumour stemming from?

When you’re looking at players of the ilk of Bennell, Martin and Murray there’s always going to be some risk and I’m not sure whether any of them necessarily entail taking cheap risks. I would be very surprised if a Goodwin team took a risk with any one of the above three but if it did, a reformed Murray might be the one.

That’s one of the worst insults I’ve seen on this site.

If you were going to take a risk you want maximum reward.

Bennell is the only one of that group that could give that.

I agree Jack that there's inherent risk and it's probably greatest with Bennell because it's behaviour and injury.  But to engage that risk is probably one third the price of engaging the lesser Martin risk (and lesser potential)

I hope we'll take the well trodden path of simulating the Premiers and take a risk.

There’s no question that Richmond took a risk with Sydney Stack and that it has paid off to date. I think it worked because the Tigers put in a lot of research and due diligence and then, in conjunction with Stack and his supporters, put in additional effort to make it so. A lot of follow through is needed to reduce risk. If we decide to go in that direction, that’s what’s needed irrespective of the price being asked by the player or his manager.

i'd forget about him

  • way over-priced (even on an average year basis)
  • doesn't want to even engage with us
  • will highly upload 1st contract year to get to carlton

only suns might be able to call his bluff as they have a point to make......we shall see

I don't really want him, and it appears the clubs in the same boat, but a heavily front loaded contact would be better for us. Easier to manipulate our cap for just this year rather than next. Our salary cap crunch will come trying to re-sign everyone for beyond next year. If the bulk of a hypothetical Martin contact us paid 'up front' so to speak that would be ideal.

A very big difference between Stack and Bennell.  Taking the off field issues out of it, Bennell has barely played footy for 3 years.  I dare say the persistent lower leg issues would also cause him to lose a bit of zip.

I think it’s pretty clear that every individual instance is different and the risk is different in every case. Mental and physical fitness are all taken into account in the analysis of risk.

Agree, I have no response to this.

I think this bird has flown and we need to look elsewhere.

I suspect that the club made a decision on Martin based on his asking price and isn’t pursuing him because of that so yes, we are probably looking elsewhere.

What if Jack Martin has told Melbourne the only way He will consider coming to our club is if we get Harley Bennell to our club. Then Steven May Harley and Jack Would be back together.

Welcome to Demonland. I’ve merged your thread with the existing Jack Martin thread.

He's what we need, would be thrilled if he chose Melbourne to take the next step - however quite injury prone so a little wary of the price-tag.  Funnily enough his recent GC highlights package shows him mostly kicking goals against Melbourne and Carlton.

Welcome, but that makes absolutely no sense. Players don't demand to go to clubs by insisting that their club of choice take their mate in too.

Unless you’re the Suns and you’re given a priority pick to keep mates together...

Perhaps Melbourne getting Martin for free was part of the AFL Suns assistance package. i.e. helping us without the optics of helping us

As part of the effort to trim the runtime of the regular podcast, we’ve been looking at which segments could be reshaped without losing what makes them valuable. One segment that naturally came into focus was Binman’s Stats Files. Not because it isn’t important; quite the opposite. It’s become such a substantial and much-loved part of the show that it deserves a little room to breathe.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
