In theory yes but there is a price and he isn't really a 'proven' performer. He is a reasonable player with a lot of potential. At the risk of setting off a firestorm I rate him like Jack Watts. Could be anything but will probably end up middle of the road.

Dover's got a history of this.

In the lead up to the 2012 mini draft this is from an article in relation to Martin nominating for the mini draft.  I'd like to know Jason's thoughts on the 'wrong club' and the 'right environment':

It is a system that Martin's manager, Jason Dover, said could work for the teenager if he is recruited into the right environment.

However, it is possible he would remain in WA for the first 12 months of any deal if that didn't happen.

"We need to make a decision by Wednesday as to whether Jack nominates or not and part of that decision is weighting up which clubs are likely to figure for this," Dover told AFL.com.au.

"If it looks like the deal is done with the wrong club and we don't believe it would be best for Jack's development, then there is every chance that he'll stay in WA for that 12 months.

"Having a year in the system and developing a lot of the positive habits would be perfect for him in the right environment and with the right plan around him.

"I can see it working really well for a player like Jack, it's just trying to get him into the right environment."

Is it true that his first name's "Ben"?

we need to back ourselves in that we can convert him to staying if he front loads his contact and back ourselves in to make him better player

we need some X factor

It might not, but it should in my opinion.

Why?

What in any of his IG photos, is particularly worrying... or are you judging on the photo above? If you are, then I find that kind of judgemental attitude far more worrisome.  Perhaps you can enlighten me as to other ways in which he has strayed from the path of righteousness? (and as much as I believe sometimes it should be, fashion sense is not a crime)

It's about time the AFL came down on this draft tampering. Martin has no right to name any one club he will only play for. He's open slather for anyone to draft him who will pay his contract. having said that he's probably not worth anything over $600K

Draft tampering isn't really a thing. Experienced players have a right to meet with whoever they want and to set whatever contract they like. If Melbourne and Carlton were the other way around we'd be doing the same thing.

I'm a big jack watts fan but I think that is a completely reasonable comparison.

I wonder if along with both being highly skilled players who haven't fully delivered what was expected they also both have suffered from poor development at resource poor, lowly clubs.

There’s a separate Murray thread available.

I’m here to read about Martin, hardtack.

actually they can't set any contract they like

it has to be min of 2 years and can only be expressed as x $s over y years. that's it

everyone can then bid on just that basis

whoever then gets him can pre-load or back-load by mutual consent, but can't go less than the x over y

Sorry McQueen, but I could only respond where the post I was quoting existed. I’ll desist now.

It's not the trade period , it's a draft he can do what he likes in private, but by putting it out there in public he's trying to influence the draft.

Is it balls or stupidity if the price is genuinely too high?

that is the question , how far do you back yourself ?

like life I go all in, so its bit of both !

The question to ask is will he improve our team or fill a gap in our playing list. In my opinion the answer is NO and Fritch can more than adequately fill the role. Remember Richmond spent years poaching Collingwood players as payback and it got them nowhere. If Carlton want him they can have him. They have played Gold Coast to get him for nothing and ironically the last time I remember this they took Nick Stevens from Port. Clubs have long memories and it will come back and bite the Blues as Martin just isn't worth $700K.

I have a tattoo of a cat on my right forearm............ (if you want to know why, just ask)

Probably comes with some ugly baggage, but I can't believe with so much upside that a question of this potential has been overlooked until post #526. I'm sensing an absolute bargain here which could slot right in to address our current humour shortcomings (and at worst a solid citizen which can cover for Tremblay while he's on the sidelines with a #brokentrade issue), such as that your cat vaguely resembles Billy Stretch, in the way that in stretches a lot. ?

Do not want, Hoping another small forward from SA that got a low ball offer registers as DFA. Better value IMO.

Agree. Sam Gray is still a chance.

What Carlton/Martin can do I think is set the contract at say 2 mil over 2 years but agree to pay only 1.2mil over 2. However the 2 mil figure has to go into the cap and not the 1.2.

Not according to this.

Haha, nah not a of of baggage.

My daughter had been saying for years that we should get matching tatts, as she already had a couple and i had zero. I said yeah, why not..... bugger me if she didnt turn up with a pre-purchased coupon from her tattoo lady. Couldn't renege now could i?

Anyway, we both like cats so we chose cat tattoos.... I got mine on the right forearm to distract attention from the huge scar on my left forearm (from heart surgery). People always ask about the cat-tat but never notice the scar.

Winning bigly.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?
