No contact to the head.

May braces but doesn’t fully bring the arm up to lock the shoulder.

May is nearly stationary at collision as other player is running forward.

Umpires were there and no concern.

Mummy puts forearm into players face a week before and is fined.

This not suspension worthy or IMO even reportable.

Luckily he just raised his chin before impact. Looks like he copped the worst on the Adam’s apple. Would have bloody hurt but no real real damage.

Joel Smith has shown great form. And the best part is that he is kicking straight. Must stay forward.

Not so sure 'Dr'...

Smith, Tommy and Weid are not working well together.

Part of the problem is the delivery into the forward half but a lot of it is positioning.

They are spoiling each other and getting in each others way.

Does Smith make way for Melk?

Just about choked on my morning coffee while in. A cafe this morning reading the Herald Scum. Sam Edmund has potted that Vandenberg tummy tap that was awarded a fifty as likely to land him in trouble. Neale should be fined for staging. These journos are beating up both incidents.

My concern is that we look slow - getting caught with the ball too often and have trouble breaking free to allow good ball movement

Coz we are SLOW

Brisbane's run and spread really opened us up and there are much better teams than them going around!

Stretch, Hates contact 19 disposals 15 uncontested and even then he doesnt hurt with his disposals Should not play another Game

ANB Putrid fumbled many times Casey bound next game

Kielty not and never will be up to it

Oscar Slow Frosty a much better bet

Lewis? Time has passed him by

JKH even before injured didn't do enough List clogger

Weeds needs to impose himself more

Spargo kicked a goal but again doesn't do enough

Hibberd was killed by Lyons

Can someone explain how we miss too many easy targets with attrocious Kicking and even more shocking handballs around someones ankles.

Brisbane's game plan and personel fantastic, full credit to them !

And this surprises you?? ?

I was there yesterday.  We looked underdone and slow.  ANB needs to step up, he is a great trainer but it does not translate in games.  Our forward setup looks ragged and it is bombed in too much.  Brisbane spread better and cut us open.  We have a lot of improvement to go when the real stuff starts.

well yeah I agree in that they aren't working well together. I think weideman or McDonald need to roam higher up the ground so we don't have 3 talls clashing.

I'm a massive joel Smith fan though and am confident that he isnt going anywhere. they'll find a spot for him for all 22 games.

I've said this multiple times on this forum over the past 12 months.

Leg speed is so overrated in football. It's all about ball movement, when we get our run game going & quick handballs we look slick & quick (passage in the 1st quarter where chain of hanballs through the middle & Hibberd fluffed the kick at goal from 50m is one example). Yesterday we turned the ball over by foot & by hand which made us look "slow" but disposal at this time of year is nothing to worry about.

We do lack leg speed but people only bring this up when we don't play our way because the opposition doesn't let us not because we are slow.

Regardless, it’s really silly by May. No need to risk a possible suspension so late in the last practise game. His feet are almost off the ground.

Because of the height differential, he was:

1. Keeping hands and arms outta the contact and absorbing the impact moment, and

2. Protecting his knackers from the impact, elevating slightly from a front-on imminence.

Name one Tribunal member who would not do the same in the spirit of fair play. What's more, this is an example of elite impact cushioning for minimal risk to both players with the incoming transgressor really trying to get a head bump for the free - is it May's fault that he is so much larger, taller and intuitive than his 'unselected' opponent?

Watching the game live yesterday, for mine the only time we played “properly” with decent intensity was the second quarter in which we dominated. For the rest of the match the boys fiddled around and generally looked half interested, apart from Steven May who tried to kill everyone including his teammates a couple of times!

Vanders’ arms will need the fortnight to recover  for Round 1. Just saw he was credited with 16 tackles.

Onyer, Vanders. Rock of Gibraltar wherever and whenever he plays.

Im really surprised Hibberd has escaped DL wrath. I thought he looked like he didnt know or thought he can get away with having slowed down. Shades of Brian Wilson, when just losing that little bit of toe can be a problem.

May might be lucky and ‘get off’ but it was still a very unnecessary action and he is clearly a recidivist when it comes to things like this

P  l  e  a  s  e  . Play it at normal speed and the Brisbane player was watching the flight of the ball, did not see May standing directly in front of him and basically ran into May. Was May meant to tip toe out of the way? Remember he would have had a split second to decide to tip toe away and get branded a shirker or simply stand his ground. He did no more than brace himself for a collision caused by the lack of awareness of the Brisbane player. Had it been a road accident the Brisbane player would have copped a fine for taking his eyes off the traffic in front of him. It happened in front of umpires, commentators had no problem with it until it was replayed in slow motion. No free kick was awarded and only two Brisbane players made very belated attempts to tick May off.  Like I say, p  l  e  a  s  e, if you don't mind...

I should add to these comments that I said something very similar during the pre-season last year, and look how that turned out.  I still think our ball-movement into the forward 50 is the worst in the competition and we score through weight of numbers rather than good play, but it can't be denied that we DID score more than any other team in the competition last year.  Imagine what our scorelines would be if we attacked in a competent fashion.

It’s an unfortunate by-product of trying to play the game in our forward half.

A congested F50 is always going to cause a greater ratio of high balls.

It’s a worry no doubt. There’s only a few players who have the pin point accuracy to hit a leading forward and we all know who they are.

The rest just send it long and hope for the best.

What it was is a great conversation and space filler for comentators to talk about in an otherwise pretty meaningless game and sensational head line for the media to milk for a few days.

So........

A hitout against a team peaking at wrong end of season......

..playing with 2/3 to 3/4 of a preferred lineup ... 1/4 out of position ....playing for NO points..

....and we look about 5/8 our expected ??

Yes ..all those numbers are [censored] and mean nothing....just what you can expect from preseason fluff.

Wake when it really starts.

Carry on chaps

It was a practice match...the players got some k’s into the legs and a bit of conditioning. The rest is all fugazi, clearly saving something special for round 1.

I hope that is all it is  'ET'...  as I'm concerned about our level of teamwork and flowing form.

I don't care about not winning the game,  but our form over two JLT matches.

Agreed 'wwsw'... I'd like to see May change his blocking method.  so to not risk missing games in future.

We should be a  'little'  underdone in comparison to cellar dweller Lions...  We want to be running ontop of the ground come September.  The Lions have to be running ontop of the ground for Rnd1.

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
