I reckon it will be more than that. The shoulder surgery guys (Clarry, Harmes, Jetta?) probably won't be ready for contact and I doubt Viney will be full time training by then. Lever definitely not. Petracca possibly not either. Not sure where Melk is at but didn't do much running the day I was there and then there is the question mark over where Hannan has been the last two sessions.

It's not surprising we have more in rehab given we went deep into September.  We haven't seen this problem for years and we are not accustomed to it.

I think this is the issue 'george'...

Given the late start to training (and required surgery) and the extra long Christmas break this year I'm not overly concerned with the rehab list.

The club wouldn't want to push too many at this stage.

The real measure will be after the break.

I would expect the injury list to drop markedly after the first week back.

None of that has any relevance to what you were pulled up on. That being; what it is that determines an 'interrupted pre-season'.

I don't need to go and ask coaches at training to know that.

It remains to be seen whether or not the number of players we have in rehab/missing parts of the program will have an impact come the start of the season. Whilst I agree that the majority are at least able to do most of the running part of pre-season, you've cast a blind eye over pretty much every other component of fitness which at this level, are all extremely important given how competitive the game is.

Good post STMJ.

I think there is little doubt we will be impacted by the number of players we have who have had interrupted preseasons. History tells us as much. The question is how much (Note: to be clear i'm not suggesting you think otherwise - i'm sure you agree and were just being conciliatory)

Of course a mitigating factor will be that most in rehab have been able to keep their fitness levels up, but any disruption hurts to some degree and the issue we have is so many players are having some interruptions.

An issue for the dees is the 'Melbourne way' ie goody's way places a huge emphasis on fitness but also high intensity, high impact football that will expose any deficit cause by interrupted preparations.

With so few player's rehabbing last year we were able to make a fast start. But one huge positive (and at the risk of jinxing them) is unlike last year Tmac and Viney both seem to have had uninterrupted preseasons thus far. If that continues we will have both ready and raring to go round 1, which will go along way to offset the high impact of the number of players who have had interrupted preseasons

Nicely articulated @binman but we all knew what was happening.  STMJ was playing semantics with Saty as Saty was with STMJ. I used to get involved in this oneupmanship for which I now apologize.  It really is just plain boring.

On a topic related comment, Viney's situation is concerning given his history.  Reported as an ankle operation postseason and in the latest from Ben Guthrie it's now turned into a foot issue.  I'm hoping for the best but I'm not confident.  Waiting for Misso's injury report and looking forward to seeing how many in rehab return to full training post-Christmas.

Brendan McCartney believes how important pre-seasons were. Many players have still to do a full pre-season and how crucial it is to, not only fitness but interestingly, to skill. He said that it is only when the player is at their peak and have totally grown into their body, meaning height as well in Weids case, and actually undergoing a 1st preseason in Vand den and J Smths (I think) case, that the silky side of skills blossoms. I hadnt realised he was foreseeing a large percentage of our best players were going under the knife end of year.

It does make you gasp to see how Jack Viney and van den Burg came in at the end of season and took the bull by the horns so to speak.

In any case it seems to me the telling part of 2019 will be how we go in the 1st half dozen and the last few matches.

Its not uncommon to see the power clubs mid ladder up to 6 weeks into the new season... before they start to hit their form.

When playing into late September, we ought to structure our training time-frames to suit being as fresh as we can be, for the finals series.

Terrible thing to happen to Mitchell but I wouldn’t say that a key injury to such a major player for a rival team for a finals spot is “not MFC related”.

Let’s hope that we don’t suffer a similar setback to one of our players.

Saw an article on Robert Shaw and he described Salem as the most skillful of the players that he coached at Brighton Grammar and that he could turn a game in 15 minutes. Kelly and Watts were others he coached. Pretty big wrap on Salem and suggests he has improvement left in him.

I'd think we would all agree on that because of the plethora of skills that Salem has displayed in a mixed team that rarely involves him in all aspects of the game; what he has shown is a superlative consistency in his application (when the team time aspect of his game was involved). Skills? Most definitely 'YES'. More game involvement? I just wonder about his previous injuries, medical conditions, body build for the rough stuff; so far, he has been more than useful and at times, brilliant. Team maturation will bring out his best, I'm sure.

good update from Misso

especially regarding Gussy

only 8 left in Rehab is a big improvement

very positive report. hope its on the mark. I noticed Melksham was very restricted during the finals with his hamstring. he was still in such good form for us. amazing really. I think hes more important the Petracca on our forward line so hope we get him right. the other is Viney. amazes me he was in rehab due to his foot, then played finals then back to rehab. Doesn't that suggest we were rolling the dice a bit?. we need to get him right and if you ever going to rest him its now.

Misso is back at last with a Pre-season injury update and reports on the rehab list which consists of 8 players at the moment:-

Oskar Baker coming back from a hammy and “due to do some training on” the club's forthcoming camp.

Mitch Hannan doing some running after a “double knee scope”.

Nathan Jones is recovering slowly from some back and hamstring issues he had before Christmas.

Jake Lever (ACL) - over a few pre-Christmas issues and “starting to put in some really consistent training.”

Jake Melksham another one a hamstring issue and “taking a little bit more time with it.”

Clayton Oliver - both shoulders were operated on and expected to be in full training by “the end of camp.”

Jack Viney is going really well and will be back from his foot issues in full training after the camp.

Guy Walker had a procedure on his shoulder over the Christmas break “which is going to be a reasonably slow recovery.”

It feels like this preseason we've had way more guys starting slow and recovering from surgery, not to mention a few injuries thrown in. Anyone else concerned heading into the season? I've got a slightly uneasy feeling about it all. Hopefully I'm just being paranoid!

The Flip side is that they were all carrying these injuries into matches hence limiting performance in some way.

It may take 3-4? games to get our best team on the park but at least they may all be in a physically better place by the pointy end of the season. Go Dees!

"We may miss a few heading into round one, we're still working towards that but we'll have to wait and see." - Simon Goodwin, 14/02/2019.

I'm sure I read somewhere that apart from Lever, all payers have pretty much had an uninterrupted preseason?

Don't panic 'M'.  I think we are having an exceptional Pre season with very few real concerns.

Only minor niggles, that the club thankfully is treating patiently with kid gloves.  The club rightly knows that it will be a long season for us...  and we will warm into the season, so that we can be full flight by May.

If we are 2 & 2 in the 1st month of the season we wil be in great shape for the ladder.  If we better that, we are in prime territory.

There is absolutely no point going off prematurely, and fading away after the midway point.

 - - - - - - - - - - - - -

My take on all the preseason surgeries, especially  'Oli'  have two shoulders Reco'd,  is not just for 2019...  but looking at 2019, 2020, 2021...

We are just starting to open our window,  to let the autumn breeze blow through.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
