In the op's audio, Caro says she and Bartlett chatted about the function last week and all was good.  The article I quoted was published over the weekend in The AGe.  Yesterday she gets a call from our marketing department to say not to attend.  That sounds like a knee-jerk reaction and churlish, especially after a near 20 year history.

We can't go banning journo's when they write something we don't like.  Not good for business.

Sir Alex did it all the time. Didn't hurt the brand much over there either. Here is a good example:

Yeah, I think Clarko could get away with this too, but not sure the MFC have the standing to do this... at this stage.

This is the same women who tried to expose us for tanking only a few more years agoand ended up paying $500k fine. Stuff her.

And ignores anything bad that happens at Richmond.

Should ban her from the next 20 functions too.

It seems Bartlett didn't want her there even tho she had been doing this gig for nearly 20 years.  Apparently, it was her passing reference to Pert's appointment and questioning the mfc due diligence in this article https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/the-storm-before-the-calm-at-melbourne-20180921-p50587.html was the reason for withdrawing her invitation.

It is Bartlett's prerogative to invite who he wants but I reckon it is churlish of him.

I didn't like the article but it went unnoticed and it is a shame it and the Pert appointment have now been brought into the spotlight.

Very thin-skinned if that article was the reason she got canned...

Is she gonna come camping next year?

My immediate reaction despite the many potential public relations ramifications: hehe

Bored of Board talk. Not a footy politics person? Don't blame ya

JD we have Jesse stories to blow up over, way more important than a self important journo blow up.

That's a well written informative and generally very positive article. There's no way that could cause offence.

If anything it's this previous article referenced in the recent article that is in play:

https://www.google.com.au/amp/s/amp.theage.com.au/sport/afl/gary-pert-s-resurrection-a-contentious-call-at-melbourne-20180629-p4zojn.html

It is critical but hardly ban worthy.   I think it's dangerous to declare war on such an influential journo who has been supportive of us recently. I'm not a Caro hater though.

Not good enough if true. A President of a footy club should be above this. Feel free to fine in private, but you don't go around banning journalists just because they don't agree with your appointment processes.

Does make a lot of sense from a business, marketing and media relations side of things. Shutting out the cheif football writer from the second largest print media in Melbourne is just asking for trouble.

Not the same situation at all.  Fergie is addressing a group, not a specific person .  And there is nothing in this to say Caro has lied.

Few AFL people would like how Caro goes about things.  Most President's and CEO's just let her rant!

For example:  Eddie was on FC last night.  He and Caro have the ultimate media love/hate relationship - just watch them go at each other.  He above all has good reason to ban Caro from everything at CFC but he has a thick skin and is very smart - Eddie strongly believes in the 'keep your enemies close' philosophy.

Bartlett could do well to take a leaf or two from Eddie's book.  Especially as it is a gig she has done for MFC as a volunteer for about 20 years.  She didn't need to give up her time to support our struggling club.  And he could have given her the courtesy of a call to withdraw the invitation rather than thru a media manager.

Bartlett has not done the club any favours here.  There will come a day when he needs her influential voice.  She would be in her rights to say 'sorry mate'!

Sorry LH, the Sir Alex example wasn't a great one, I'll admit that.

The point I was trying to make is that these things can happen and it doesn't mean a whole lot in the long run. Clearly, there are numerous media outlets clubs can use - banning one journalist, if that's Caro or someone just recently hired at The Australian, will mean little in the years to come.

I see this situation as similar to the cancelled camp from late last year. Many people absolutely lost it over it without knowing even close to the full details, and look where it got them. The camp meant nothing in the long run.

Same could be said of this. Do we know the full details? Not even close, yet we are happy to pass full judgement on Bartlett anyway. How do we know that Caro was told after the first article that she was wrong in some aspects and told not to run with the story again? How do we know if there hasn't been a few other issues at play? Again, we don't, so instead of saying Bartlett hasn't done us any favours and so forth, how about we give our own President the benefit of the doubt before we cast judgement?

It's a storm in a teacup if you ask me, much like the camp from last year.

Caro acknowledged that Barlett was not happy with an earlier article.  They discussed it last week and he said.   ‘I’m bigger than that, no big deal.’

You can raise all the questions you like but the facts we know:  Caro has been co-hosting this function for the club for 20 years.  She wrote an article over the weekend.  Bartlett withdrew the invitation a few days ago and did so thru our media department (who according to Caro cited the reference in the latest article, to diligence around the Pert appointment, as the reason).

As I've said in earlier posts, to me the ban is churlish and the communication thru the media dep't lacks courtesy by Barlett.  Other people on here might have different values to mine but my views on this do not equate to 'passing full judgement on Bartlett' in general.  He is an excellent President.

How is this news? Journos have such an inflated opinion of their contribution to society.

Maybe Pert has got out at the right time, and no correspondence will be entered into.........

In many things, she does need to be a little less contentious, headline-grabbing, controversial as her outbursts often lead to people in football looking behind rather than moving forward. I'd hate to be driving my Range Rover with her, as a backseat passenger, watching every inch of the road in order to comment unnecessarily just to be heard.

While I agree with your point, she's no longer the chief football writer at The Age. She retired from that role before the 2018 season began and now does some podcasts and other things for Fairfax (including appearing on Footy Classified, now that Fairfax and Nine have joined forces). Jake Niall is now their chief football writer. Even though Caro is no longer the chief, your point is still 100% correct. She remains a very influential figure within the football media.

Maybe they were sick of her drudging up the past with no new reporting.

Maybe the fact that Caro leaked that her invitation was pulled and why is proof enough her time is up.

She has been attending/co-hosting the function with other journo's for nigh on 20 years.  You don't think her absence would have been noticed and questions asked?

What do you expect her to do - leave it for another journo to 'break the news' with their own spin or for her to own the situation and speak to it directly?

I would normally think childish, but after Caro's comments on Jim Stynes and the statue a couple of weeks back, good on the club for banning her, she should hang her ugly head in shame.

MFC need to get a lot better at their media management.

Not the greatest week for the club on so many fronts.

This week should all be about the journey to 50,000 members and we get this, not to mention Saturday's performance which cost us hell knows how many members.

Agreed. Wilson’s disdain for many things MFC over the last 10 years have been well known.

I am quite happy for her to stay away.

She is not the Chief anymore

i am sure Bartlett has reasons we don’t know about

This is the kicker. If she was some scrub who was doing it for the first time then fine but it would have been nice to see some more courtesy shown.

I’m a little behind in my reading - what comments were these?

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
