Would be the first time against decent opposition.

Just think for a moment.

MFC want May....not Hogan.

Load ... repeat....load.... repeat.

May will make Hogan sook.

I was hoping it would be MFC May....Freo Hogan when that happens.

May sooked it up good against us when he was whinging to the umpire and got done for illegal contact if you recall.

Think I'll support our player (assuming he does stay: this has lost me) instead of carrying on with cryptic jargon in an attempt to appear super intelligent....

I’m not sure how the trade period works but I’d be very happy for Mahoney to refuse to sit down with Freo after today. Remove any possibility of them getting Hogan now.

There are 3 logical possibilities:

1. Freo are idiots

2. Freo is holding out for a last minute deal with us

3. There is something about Hogan that is not public; injury or whatever.

I'm not sure 1. is proved yet and it's a mistake to assume your opponent is an idiot.  No 2. seems most likely.

You're correct

So thread page 300 is still on the cards!

Good for you.

Doesn't answer the question as to why MFC wants May....not so much Hogan.

You blindly support without thinking ?

Let's be super positive. Maybe 6/6/6 and the hands in the back rule being withdrawn will turn defenders into pedestrians that get scored heavily on no matter how good they are. Having a jacked forward line might be the best bet next year.

Freo are an absolute rabble. Cannot believe that, after how many years of chasing a genuine star key forward, they finally convince one to join them and then pull this. Whether it is a negotiating tactic or not, it is completely baffling. They have no idea what they are doing.

If it's a negotiating tactic, it's the kind you come up with after asking for advice on Yahoo Answers. "I'm chasing a star forward that I desperately need, what should I do?"

Congrats on Hogan staying a demon let's hope he can repay us and have a fantastic year.

Great outcome! Didn't want this to happen. Fantastic result. Watch Hogan kick 50+ goals and sign a new contract with us next year.

Errr..or is this real? I mean is that the end of it...really?

Not at all the club wants the best deal possible as they fear Hogan won't stay at the end of his current contract and May in their eyes is the best player available to fit our needs. I believe if Jesse was willing to commit long term that would be the priority ahead of getting May.

The club would be planning what the list would ideally look like over the next 1 - 5 years to try to get the maximum return out of what's currently a pretty strong position

Perhaps it's as simple as

1) the club had an expectation that Jesse would request a trade at the end of his current contract

2) they had been tracking May with a view to getting him at the end of his current contract (which Mahoney has confirmed)

3) they saw an opportunity to advance those changes by 12 months

And perhaps you're reading too much into it old chap.

Perhaps

It just doesn’t sit with me that they’d

chase Jesse for the last 6 years including before he was at Melbourne

offer him a truckload if cash

get him over there for the tour for four hours

get his hopes up, finally convince him to join them.

And then only low ball us but make an offer they know we won’t accept and refuse to budge. It’s insulting to us and especially to Jesse.

This is absolute amateur hour from the freo people.

They've change tack. midstream.

Melbourne want Hogan we have offered him a 5 year contract.

The person who said Melbourne don’t want Hogan and Fremantle are cooling on him was Tom Brown on mmm and he said he formed that opinion through the language of both footy clubs. It is a load of [censored].

Where is he going?  Surely the Freo bridge is burnt now.

I get that this saga has pi55ed you off, but there's an opportunity to get around him and make him feel at home.

We’ve gotten around him and made him feel at home since the day he arrived. Thru the death of his dad, thru his cancer battle. We are not the issue. He clearly wants to go home.

Next year he’s out of contract. Maybe WCE join the race and up his price. He will leave one way or another. Unless something drastically changes in his attitude or his personal life.

Alarm bells went off when Bell initially used the phrase 'feather in my cap'. In other words, it's quickly become all about him and not the outcome. Now Hogan's worth significantly more than pick 11 (even taking into account my obvious bias) but the problem is that Bell is more interested in being seen as the smartest guy in the room. The deal won't get done because of an over -inflated ego and whilst in may or may not be a setback for us short term, it's a problem for Freo in the longer term.

Hogan is in the situation of someone who for years has never quite been able to let go of an ex, with that ex constantly trying to convince you to leave your partner.

Finally you have the heart-to-heart with your partner, the 'I love you but I can't let go of my ex and I need to see this through' and then the ex says 'oh, no, not really, I was just saying that, I don't actually want to be with you for real, too much responsibility'.

Now Hogan is left where? In the situation of begging his ex to take him, going back to his old partner who still loves him, or trying to start out all over again with someone else?

Whatever the case, it is hard to imagine any of Hogan's family being happy about this. The harder Freo have pushed in the past, the more Hogan's family will be angry about the bizarre behaviour now.

The 5 year contract was a put up or shut up deal designed to force his/their hand. That's all.

As a side note I am so pleased with Melbourne's professionalism in these situations! Can't see there being a backflip now that Melbourne have responded publicly.

Very straight bat from Mahoney, now I want to see us table a 3+ year deal to him. Say to him, “let’s win the premiership together”.

As for Bell and Fremantle, I hope Jesse kicks 10 on you flogs next year.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
