Yes, this is also about May and the club working towards improving the list.

It's one thing to say that we can play Hogan as a defender and another for the proud forward to actually want to play as a defender.

McDonald, Hogan and Weideman in the same forward half simply doesn't work, whereas May coming into our defence is significant to our fortunes.  Weideman's progression is key in all of this.  The club has always rated him highly and his ability to take contested marks and be BOG in a final would give the club confidence that we can make the best of an unwanted situation.

I don't think we win the flag in 2019 with a defence that includes Frost and McDonald.  A defence that includes May and McDonald is much better equipped to take that next level.  And with Lever back Gawn will be able to push forward more next year rather than drift back to intercept mark.

The club will be doing everything to ensure Hogan leaving actually makes us better.  May is worth one first rounder and Hogan should yield two.  Does the club take the other pick to the draft or use it for more immediate gains.

I'm a Hogan fan, but it is possible we improve from his leaving.

I fully agree with this ^^ BUT i was hoping Jesse would play one more year with us.

That’s the sad bit. We are close...

But that’s up to Hogan.

For him to miss this years Final series was so sad considering what he has been through, and i am sure the MFC have always been there for him. :(

Whatever the compensation may be, it’s clear to me from Jones’ comments that Hogan is leaving.

I have full trust in the club to maximise the compensation, but I hope we don’t cough-up too much for May.  Any compensation pick we send to Fold Coast will hopefully net is May and KK at least.

Okay I will say it but this whole thing stinks.

I’d love the trade to be:

neale to bris for pick 4

pick 4 and freo future 1st to us for hogan

pick 4 to port for 9 and 10

10 and our future 1st to gc for may and kk.

Will leave us with pick 9, freos future 1st, may and kk for hogan and a pick in the late teens next year

Worst moment as a demons supporter in my lifetime. Two firsts isn't enough. 9 and 10 is a joke of a trade for a player of his quality. We have been smashed again. Worse than the Scully trade.

I hate football.

ummmm......no trade details have been confirmed or settled yet......in fact neither has a trade

patience grasshopper............it will still take quite a few weeks

I wanted Jesse to leave with a Flag...

I more concerned with me seeing a flag, the club seeing flags, than Jesse. He can look after himself.

Actually only 2 and a half weeks at most. Might know the full deal in 9 days.

I think they have described themselves more as being realists rather than shrewd which is how they dealt with the charge that giving away two draft picks early to get Jake Lever might have been “overs”.  They are now in the exact opposite situation where they hold all of the cards and the Dockers want to snare a big fish. Let’s see how shrewd they are now.

Why do posters continue to perpetuate the myth that the Lever trade was for 2 first rounders only?  We got a 2nd back and late 4th to mid 3rd round upgrade.  Do you always say keep the change when you hand over a $50?

It was actually a better deal than the originally mooted 1st + 2nd.  Particularly because we finished high in 2018 and this year's first was devalued.

It was a good deal IMO.

Overreaction or what. You have no idea whay the details are. Get a grip man.

Read the thread. I've been across it the whole time. Come back to me in 8 years when we see what he's like when his career comes full term. I stick with my assessment. He's been a star since his first game he's not gonna somehow turn crap as soon as he goes to Dockers.

Gutted Jesse is leaving? I wish him all the best for the future.

I hope we don't give two first round picks just for May? Sorry i don't think he is worth it, maybe a early second pick?

If true, then it's a very disappointing decision from Jesse. I feel as though the club has shown him tremendous support throughout a variety of things and there is a small part of me that hoped he would return that support.

However, it's hard to get your back up about it when clubs sometimes show little loyalty to players as well. This is the current landscape of football, and while it's a tough pill to swallow, I trust the FD to get the right deal, to get it done quick and to ensure it makes us better in the long run.

The one solace we can take is that Weideman is starting to really come on and we may be shoring up our degence further with May and possibly KK. If we get two first rounders then we may also hold on to it to add a quality young player to our list as well, or move that on to improve us even further.

At the end of the day it sucks to potentially lose Jesse, but if he does go home then I'm comfortable that we can still come out of it looking great on the other side.

Reliably told Jesse has

A. Formally asked to be traded to Fremantle.

B. The dockers have agreed in principal to 2 first round picks this year for hogan

will be either 6 &10 or 9&10 and an exchange of later picks. Some haggling to go on there.

Steven may looking all but certain to join in exchange for one of those picks. I suspect kk will be involved in that deal.

apologies if this news is already known, I haven’t been able to keep track on this thread.

kk?

Outside of that, not with standing this has potential to be really positive for us in pick/player, I’m really disappointed to see him go. Was really hoping he was going to see some enjoyable footy at the Dees after his tough run let along feel like he could be a 70 goal fwd.

OK lets say we could trade Hogan for Kelly who is a superstar, who does Kelly kick to up forward? Where do we get 50+ goals a season from?

If we trade Hogan, we have to at the very least replace his output like for like, if not better it.

If you can find me a KPF Hogan's age who will kick 50+ goals a season, every season, then I'm super open to discuss a trade.

Who is this ready made player, who is actually available, that will improve us going forward?

Who is going to cover the 50 odd goals that Hogan has kicked for us this year?

I look forward to your suggestions.  Remember, I'd like to see players who will actually be available and that we need to trade for.  Gaff doesn't count because we can get him without trading.

We're about to find out I reckon.

If Hogan goes what do we get in return? You have no idea. This could be the best deal for the MFC ever. Yes Hogan may go on to be the best player ever, but if we win 4 flags in a row who wins?

Because no-one cares about the points system. The only way it's relevant is if we're GWS or Sydney or a club that needs good academy players and we need to cash in for the bidding system. Some demons supporters (not necessarily you) are desperate to say we didn't get smashed in that deal, and the only evidence is the points... and the fact we have Taylor hitting home runs with later picks like Hunt, Fritta and Spargo (a 2nd/3rd round pick in his hands is worth much more)...

The second 1st rounder is still a serious piece of draft capital, especially in a superdraft. And so far, because of Lever's knee, we've had almost no return on it. Don't get me wrong, I'm still confident it'll work out... But don't kid yoruself into thinking we somehow pulled the wool over the crows eyes because we did well this season and because the picks are worth more points. Noone gives a stuff about that.

And before long it will be 2 years out as it is in all the major sports all over the world.  We're just catching up here in Oz but people are the same all over.

It has been described as the true free agency

Free agency opened up the thinking

Those rallying against change are wasting their time.  The club's best strategy is to bypass the 'If you can't beat them, join them' angle and to get to the forefront of change.

I reckon that's what we're actually doing but we're not being very loud about it.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
