Eighteen coaches with intimate knowledge of who really impacts the matches versus the umps who year on year make huge blunders like the one you’ve highlighted. 

Unfortunately the vote givers, be they either the press or the umpires, have lost the ability to vote on who has the most impact in the game. They just look at the stats so it will remain a midfielder's award until something changes.

Well actually it wasn't, he was running at 51% DE.

I stopped watching or caring much about this year's ago. The once revered award has become alas a mockery and a travesty to just efforts.

Years ago though you may not have particularly agreed with umpires at games we invariably respected abilities in the main.

Now ?  No so much. Some seem to have a vested interest in imposing some perculiar accent upon a game. Some seem blatantly biased and favouring particular players.

This is a shame. Such glaring inconsistencies between how many well credentialed in the game see things as opposed the umpires needs addressing.

Well done to our lads. Well done to all that play as Chas would have you.

It needs looking in to. Some of last nights voting was shocking at best. Gone are the days of real class and match winners in Voss, Hird, Judd, Buckley, Cousins etc. It just isn't worth watching these days and if you speak to a few players they will quietly tell you they rate the AFLCA and AFLPA awards much higher.

There is definitely some strange Brownlow voting but I think the winner is almost always a legitimate result.

I value the Coaches award far more highly though and always look at the votes there.  They know what is really going on.

AFLPA MVP maybe not so much but likely to be produce a fair result too.

Some years the best player is clear cut e.g. 2017 Dusty, other years there's a number of great players.

The Brownlow has lacked credibility for years and years. (As an aside: I wonder how credible it would suddenly be if Clarry or Max had actually won?)

But the real story is: MFC: 93 votes, CFC 37 votes, GCS 32 votes. Take out Cripps and CFC got 17 votes with only 6 blokes scoring. StKFC similar. Not that long ago we were in the position of those clubs lamenting the poor state of our list.

Those 93 votes, whether accurately awarded or not, are a good indication of the depth of our squad and how far we have come.

Well done to Gus,  Max & Clarrie but especially Brayshaw.  A great comeback story.

Max should have received more votes given his stellar season but it is a midfielders medal because it is a midfielders game.

But a lot of the midfielders don't really have a direct opponent more so an opposite number where as Max needs to beat a direct opponent. And he does so to great effect and has great influence especially with his taps to advantage (at least 15 taps to advantage in 17 games ... comparable to clearance numbers)

The coaches award has more lustre in my opinion mainly because the coaches are probably the best people to judge who the best players are.

A few observations:

• that Brayshaw wasn't invited adds credibility to the whole thing. It shows that no-one, not even the AFL, knew what was in the umpires' minds or envelopes
• Brayshaw polling more than Oliver suggests two things. He kicks the ball more than Oliver, so perhaps umpires value that form of disposal more than handpassing. As it generally equates to more metres gained, that's understandable, even though it's often the first handpass that sets that train in motion. Secondly, Oliver has a habit of arguing with umpires when he gives away a free kick or doesn't receive what he believes he's earned. I suspect umpires don't respond well to that implied criticism
• that Oliver and Brayshaw polled as well as they did is partly because of the work of Gawn. That's probably why the coaches rewarded Max more than the umpires did
• it was great that Brayshaw, Gawn and Oliver polled as well as they did. I was somewhat surprised, however, that the next best only polled seven votes. Some of our other players still need to lift. (On the other hand, our 15 players polled 93 votes, which was second overall - perhaps I'm expecting too much)
• I'm amazed how much criticism is in this thread for Patrick Cripps. He got votes because he earned them. Given how appalling Carlton was all year, he deserves some sort of award for being so good in such an awful team
• I'm sure all the nominees for the Jim Stynes Award have done great things, but I was certainly pleased to see Jetta rewarded  
• Channel 7 as usual forgot that there were viewers interested in how their team went. Not once did the broadcast provide an update showing votes for each team. Overall, I would give the broadcast a C minus. Too much nonsense when there were plenty of opportunities for proper analysis 

How are umpires like panell and Nichols supposed to know who played well? They’re still struggling to get the rules right. 

Wow I was more happy with how Gus went. Gee imagine if he did play the first few games. He could have easily won it. I now hope he realises his potential and when he has the right mindset and puts in the hardwork in the pre season. The thing with Brayshaw not only does he raschk up the possessions he kicks goals as well. 

A shame Maxy didn't get more votes. I think the brownlow is just a midfielders award now.

One thing is obvious if Carlton get there crap together and win games, Cripps will definitely win a brownlow. 

But good on Jetta for winning the Jim Stynes award and it was really nice footage to see Stynes and Gawn who looked so different and Jim talking to Gawn and handing him his jumper. It's a shame he isn't around to see how well Gawn is playing.

At the same time, the votes accumulated by Brayshaw, Oliver and Gawn made it impossible for any one of them to take the chocolate Charlie at the top of the pile. It is, at the same time, a fine testament to quality within the MFC - and augers well for 2019 - moreso than any other club.

This.  I may be wrong but I don't recall us winning any Brownlows in the 50's/60's.   We may have led the total votes count however.

The top three teams to win Brownlow medals are Sydney with 14 medals, Western Bulldogs (10) and St Kilda (10). They've won 5, 2 and 1 premierships respectively.
