It's not as bad as you make it out to be. He was recounting how in his first final last year he was "packing his dacks". He said that Melbourne players would be feeling nervous and he is right. But I think that will go away quite quickly.

Agree. I will be staggrted if viney plays a substantial midfield role. A few minutes and stoppages here and there. Its performing too well to disturb.

I'm starting to get the heebie-jeebies regarding the tactical build-up to this match and the respective coaching/playing experience. Geelong, even throughout their most dominant period, have been happy to concede the centre clearances - although they're capable if required (see last quarters v MFC 2017 and 2018).

Now they're preparing to play a three-game rookie against Max, far and away the best tap-ruck in the league, and are expecting a hard tag from Harmes on Selwood. I can see the hours of centre footage in my mind and I don't like what they're cooking up. The centre is so crucial to what we do.

Goodwin, however much I love him, has always been about playing the game on our terms (although I do think he tightened it up at crunch-time leading into the finals). I don't expect our message will change much leading into the game, and that leaves Scott to purely prep for us.

We talk a bit on here about who we need to stop, but how do we counter how they're likely going to attempt to counter us?

So, one of the clear plans for Geelong is to shark the ball in the contest...they back theirs...we back ours... (we've got better stoppers  who can damage going forward (Harmes on form, viney, I'd imagine ANB may go to Ablett, with his running power, and AVB and Trac with their bigger body.core strength to impede the Danger/Selwood/Ablett/Menegola getting the ball)).

 Also having Max drop into the backline, and the rebound from Hibberd/Salem, will be used to scythe through transition on the 45 for ANB, Trac to allow TMAC, Weid to mark the ball in the F50 and if they don't mark it,  Spargo to be front and centre at the fall to snaffle the crumbs and ANB to poach 3 goals running into the goal square...

Just on that... Spargo for a cool 5 goals

Didn't realise Geelong are just as bad if not worse than us at the G.

They have a 1-5 record (0.16) while we have a 5-6 record (0.45)

I'd like to rephrase that a little, just to reflect accuracy, as follows: Geelong beat the Demons at the MCG (with intense, continuously timely, critical positioning near-goalmouth free kicks from the helpful Green Snot Goblins (umpires) across a whole game to keep them in the game, and they also beat Collingwood, which was only fair.

Gawn can tap it anywhere and our contested ball is so clean that every team needs to look at ways to counteract us.   The predictable thing is for Geelong to drop one or more players back into our forward 50 to counter our centre clearances.  From Geelongs perspective they would be backing that they can crowd our i50 and kick their way out of defense.    If Scott does that then the game is totally on our terms and if our f50 stoppages are good and pressure is on and we run hard to close down rebound out of our f50 (like we did with GWS), then we would win.

The last quarter last time against Geelong was a shootout.  I suspect Geelong will not want to risk a shoot out unless they find themselves behind.  But if I was Scott, I think that is probably the best chance they would have to win.  I don't think he'll risk it though.  

 

 

Vital that Dees judge when its their role to go into contest and when its their role to stay out to be an attacking release option or defending Cats release option.

David King highlighted Gawn’s positioning in the defensive half on 360 last night. Labelled Max as our Jeremy McGovern. It’s been forcing teams to try high risk passes exiting their defensive 50 due to Max protecting the skinny side of the ground extremely well. 

Suggested move was to have some one run with Max all day to not allow him to play that role. I don’t know much about Abbott, Stanley is in serious doubt and Smith hasn’t been setting the world on fire from all reports. The logical option would be Blicavs if this was to happen but that could work in our favour if he’s taken out of defence. 

It will be interesting to see what Goody and Co come up with if the Cats place some one to run with Max.

Slobbo also believes Max is the best ruckman since Simon Madden.

We don't need to do anything. Geelong have beaten us by our own faults. Playing 3 out of 4 qtrs has cost us, but not taking our chances when ahead also hurt. Both times the cats beat not only did they dominate a single qtr, they just kicked better for the entire game. 

Our focus in my opinion would be similar to the eagles. Smash them hard and early. If we take our chances during this burst we could easily kick 4 or 5 goals ahead by qtr time. Geelong have their own hoodoo, they suck after a bye. All their fans are nervous about the game because of the bye. If we get on top of them early their fans will lose hope and their players will lose hope. After this it's all about cracking in (like we did against the eagles) and not let a run on. 

DO NOT play Viney as a tagger, start him in the middle with Oliver and Brayshaw. Harmes straight to Selwood and Frost to Hawkins. Our first 15 is crucial so have our best players on the pitch, pumped up and ready to go.

Psychology and nerves will play a massive part in this game.

I hope we don't let the occasion overwhelm us. We need to come out strong, make a statement in the first 10 minutes that we are not scared or worried about Geelong's experience, and that this is our final. 

They are dirty filthy pr*cks who enjoy cheating, just look at their coach, so no doubt will try to ruffle our feathers and hunt our younger players. This is where guys like Jones, Lewis, Gawn, Jetta and Tmac need to stand their ground and lead the way with their physicality. 

If we can settle those nerves and keep them in check until half time, I back us to come out with a big 3rd quarter and put them away.

Nibbler debut against cats in 2015 resulted in 3 goals. Hope he does it again!!

We have to kick straight to win. 

Last 3 losses to Geelong have totalled 50.23 to 40.49 (45%).

League average accuracy is 52% and ours is 54%.  Geelong are good at forcing inaccuracy  - they are 45% against - right on our average against them.

We kick 13.16 again - we lose.

FINALS ARE DIFFERENT

I'm going to be interested to see how Scott plays his talls (at both ends).  They have Hawkins, Henderson, Blicavs, Taylor and to some degree Henry.  If they play 3 tall defenders (likely to be Blicavs, Taylor and Henderson), then our forwards should be too quick for them.  Blicavs is the only one they have that can go with Tom, so we're going to need a huge game from Sammy Weid as I'm certain Henderson will go to him.  Playing him in that traditional lead-up CHF role, taking Henderson away from his comfort zone, will help open up the F50...

Pretty happy with a couple of my tactical suggestions here...
