1, Maxy's kick off the ground in the last quarter was huge. It covered a remakable distance.  I guess he used his long leverage very well on this occasion..

2. Petracca's brilliant pass to Melksham to seal the game. Reminded me of the Jack Watts pass to Dom Tyson in the Queens Birthday match last season. Can we safely add Christian's name to our elite kicks in the team?

    Trac, Gus, Harmes, Salem, Oliver... the skills of these younger set are phenomenal (beyond elite)

    Salem’s little squeeze kick after Jones managed to win that crucial contest had to be millimetre perfect and it was. That released us up the line to get it to Melksham in the square. 

    Salem’s kicking this year has been elite.

    Petracca’s kicking elite? Not even close. His kicking really needs to improve a lot, especially his goal kicking. One cameo a game doesn’t put you in the same category as Salem, Melksham.

    He was very good in the last 15 minutes. It's why we drafted him. Those performances win games. He, Oliver, Harmes, Salem and Gawn all went to another level when the Eagles hit the front.

    Agree, but I was talking about his kicking in general, not a one off. We drafted him as a mid too, which is where I hope he ends up, so explosive and good in close.

    I agree re his kicking. It’s sometimes exceptional and sometimes v average. Eg his goal kicking. Also I still see him slipping  over or fumbling at critical times....and sense a mind set in him that , in the main, isn’t quite owning the moments . At least not in ways I sense he could. I feel Like he hasn’t quite taken the next step up mentally. I also agree he’s excellent in close... but I don’t see him as explosive. He doesn’t have that much real pace imo. Not slow, but I don’t see explosive. Degoey, martin, Garlett are a few “explosive” players that come to mind.

    Agree, I should've said strong around the hips instead of explosive, he definitely isn't quick. I really do hope he becomes the player we all thought he'd become, I haven't seen it yet.

    And Jones' toepoke kick at the centre bounce that resulted in a goal to  put us back in front in the dying stages of the match.  Not pretty but damn important!

    There was a lot to like, the Harmes pass to Kent in the last few minutes for the goal was a beauty also. Wasn’t a long kick so to speak, the outstanding part was the composure and vision in such a pressure cooker moment by Harmes.

    What was good about that pass, and many of the others, is that it wasn't rushed.  In that instance you could forgive Harmes for just getting it back inside 50.  But he took a few steps, assessed his options and took the right one.  It was a smart and mature decision that, coupled with so many others, helped us win that game of footy.

    Just shows how important good deliver is in the modern game.

    Oh for repeats in a few earlier games this season and we would be sitting in second place right now.

    The story of lost chances I guess.

    I agree Wise.  In fact, if there was one thing that really struck me on the weekend, it was our composure in tight / pressure plays.  I thought it was as good as I have seen from our team in a very long time.  I was particularly impressed that it didn't fall apart in the last quarter when things got really tight.  Hopefully it's a sign that we are maturing as a group, and it will increasingly become the norm.  It makes a huge difference.

    Trac one of the most penetrating kicks at the Demons  in the AFL.

    Harmes off the outside of the boot to centre to Kent was kick of the day.

    These were really noticeable observations from a handful of committed players.

    Really? Then why not keep him in the bench until the last 15mins and then release him?

    Petracca's kicking could be amazing but it is actually pretty poor most of the time. He gets too close to the man on the mark so often it makes me want to scream.

    In a game called 'football', it's delivery like this that can turn a game. Every kick in that passage, from the Jones toe poke to the kick over the top to Milkshake, was centimeter perfect.

    Harmes now has a real weapon - he gets the ball and like the Dangerfield's of the world he runs to get clear, all the while assessing his options. He then delivers exceptionally well. Not so long ago he, like a lot of others, would instantly dish the ball off to a stationary target. That change comes from confidence in yourself and your team mates to make position. Its a terrific development.

    Seems to me his action accelerates at the last moment before striking the ball.  Whether that is good for penetration and bad for accuracy, I have no idea.

      A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

      Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

    • NON-MFC: Round 08

      Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form.     • REPORT: Richmond

      The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.
