James Harmes  The smiling assassin chomps at the bit to beat his man for his beloved club he followed as  a kid. He has come leaps and bounds this year and he hasn't just improved dramatically over the last 7 weeks or so, he has been playing well all year. James has been given more responsibilities and has been successful at the task lately. However now he knows that he can take that next step and become an A grader , in my view he probably is recognized as one now. His game against the Cats in the Final was one of an All Australian standard. Well played James Harmes to me you are elite.

    Agree.  He has always had most of the wepons and has been steadily increasing his midfield time, duration and consistency of output over the last few years.  A few of the games over the journey that really stick out for me where he had a big impact are 2015 Vs Hawthorn, 2016 Vs Gold Coast at Metricon, 2017 Vs Gold Coast at Darwin.  In each of these games he demonstrated his characterisic ability to break tackles and break lines, hit up quality inside 50s and hit the score board.  Sorry, but those who thought he was fringe or wouldn't make it must have been watching a different game.

    All this from a guy off the rookie list.  What a great example of quality recruiting and development.

    Hype-central here, but well deserved.

    If he can shut down Mitchell and win his own ball like he has been, there's a massive chance we shut down Hawthorn's midfield and make them play counterattack on us. Pretty hard to do in a final. Given our likely clearance dominance, we'd win the game if we kick straight.

    Loved the look James gave Selwood after their initial scuffle on the boundary fence.

    It wasn't menace or hatred but some sort of emotionless fixation/concentration. 

    Like a Blue Heeler locked on a sheep. 

    Basically when I felt certain we had it in the bag.

    Spot on - the composed but intense stare that he gave Duckwood whilst Duckwood was doing his best to rile/provoke Harmes clearly worried the Cats skipper and of course led to the momentum killing free kick in the 3rd quarter

    Something to contemplate for a moment. All the pieces fall into place and it’s a Harmes V Martin match up on Grand Final day. The two number 4’s one on one. How good would that be!

    It is true; I was getting very tired of all forms of media exclaiming time and again just how 'talented', 'threatening', 'dominant', 'professional', 'skilled',  'league-leading' and 'masterful' the Geelong midfielders were relative to other teams in the competition whereas the Dees were merely a team with '...good clearance options...' in comparison. Well, the past tense of  were is now fully operational as far as the Geelong midfield holy trinity is concerned - the Dees have the best midfield of all and have again proven it in buckets.

    Harmes has even developed a neat little don’t argue. Could be a whole game of no. 4s not arguing.

    that's definitely been a slow work in progress over the years... reminded me of Jonesy early days with that too :)

    Harmsey was on triple m rush hour this afternoon. Spoke about being a dees fan growing up so was stoked when he got drafted. Said he idolised Travis Johnstone . 

    Also said he was stoked when Jonsey kicked that goal at the start of the final term and so happy after the game that they won.

    Are you suggesting that he did pick up something from Mark Neeld?

    Could we have the best #4 since John Lord, the last player to wear the number in a MFC Premiership team?

    and before John Lord, Norm Smith, and after Lordy, Tony Sullivan, a great half back flanker.

    I would play Harmes on O’Meara this week... Harmes has some toe and will  keep up. Then outrun him going the other way!

    Viney or Jones to take Mitchell and tackle him hard (pulverise) every time he goes near the ball. Aka Vince on Dangerfield. I like Viney here! Rattle Mitchell early and don’t think he will cope... ?

    I hope we don’t overthink this. Harmes to Mitchell and everyone else just hunts the footy. 

    Hard at the man and the ball, cause turnovers and get the ball moving forward.

    Don Scott gave him (Harmes) a great wrap this morning. Loved his game against Selwood.

    Likened him to Michael Tuck the way he can shut a player down, get his own ball and be damaging as an attacking option.

    I would have said O’meara but with him out you could probably give him first crack at Mitchell. Rough him up ala Selwood.

    We will need to free up a mid to get a clean run at Gawn's taps. I suspect Oliver will be heavily tagged. If we also use Harmes to tag Mitchell it probably leaves Viney as the go to mid this week. I expect he will have a big game. If O'Meara is his man then there is no point tagging O'Meara as he will be forced to go to Viney anyway. We hold all the cards because we have the best tap ruck in the league. Eventually people will come to realise good ruckman are actually very important (looking at you Leigh Matthews).

    Harmes is like a puppy we got from the dogs home. Not sure what breed but probably going to be big and powerful.

    At 6 months old he was growing into his body. Boisterous, up for anything, but clumsy.

    Now all of a sudden he's matured and we realise he's part doberman and not to be messed with. Fortunately he's good with the kids.

      Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

    • REPORT: West Coast

      On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
