Why do we still bomb long into the forward 50 after the last 2 years?

And to make it worse, we are still playing the extra player off the backline at centre bounces and only 5 in the forward line. Good coaching that, bomb the ball into our fwd 50 where the opposition has an extra player. ?

This says it all. It’s not a one off, it’s ingrained.

Would love to have have Hogan’s and Jones numbers that go with those games.

Why the hell did they bring in Hunt? '

I said on the DL podcast that he was out of form all year and off an injury had 1 quiet game in the 2's..... no surprises he had a shocker of a game

Boys did well to try and claw back in the last but once again inaccuracy costs us probably another finals berth

If players cannot perform consistently in the VFL, chances are they won't in the AFL. You were spot on if you called it.

It's no good have 2 or 3 key forwards if we cannot get them to catch the pill.

Weide will play deep, and Tmc roll around the front half.

We need more class,  and more agility inside Our 50.  The class needs to be between the arcs and on half-forward.

Hoges is next to useless when the ball is a highball.   He needs to play high, and TMc's best is in this area as well.

Hogan is 13th this year for marks (total). With a large proportion of those during a time when he hasn't been able to leave the turf cos he's jumping/landing on one leg. Of the players ahead of him, only Hawkins is a full time forward. The rest are waxing defenders. What EXACTLY more can he do to prove he can "catch" the ball?

Weed will play deep? Will he? How do you know? You're putting your faith in a player who's done absolutely nothing so far. He's shown in VFL he can take a mark on the lead and is tall. That's about it. Pedo has shown more than him. Hogan at the same age showed a truckload more, even close to goal. What you're effectively saying is Hogan is better than Weed at close to goal stuff, and has more strings to his bow further out, and you STILL want to move one in and trade the other out for picks.

Class? Not one supporter or expert would say he lacks ANY class. He's actually one of our best field kicks, once you take the blinkers off. His highball issues weren't there earlier this year. Was taking pack marks and cleaning up groups of players on the way to everyone's mid-year AA side. Since his ankle, like I've said, he's only been able to cover distance, and not been able to jump.

If you hate him, hate him. Be my guest. But your analysis is way off. He's a star of the competition... Only Lynch is more feared in his age group.

Infuriating.

Not just because of what is on the line for us in terms of finals.

But because we lost the same way we always do.

+17 inside 50s and +6 scoring shots should be a 20+ point win. Being up two men on the bench for 2.5 quarters (Hunt sat out most of the last quarter with a rolled ankle) should make that 30+ points.

Inexcusable number of passengers: Pedersen, Spargo, Garlett, Hunt, ANB and JKH all had little to no impact on the game. VDB kicked three goals but for 90% of the game was not just poor, but was a main reason for our struggles through his complete inability to compete with Aliir. Hogan and TMac missed critical shots at critical times. Jones was inept (though credit to him for his fourth quarter workrate).

We continued to kick the ball to poor places. We continued to play one off the back of the square which only resulted in them mopping up inside 50 after inside 50. And we killed our own momentum by missing easy set shots.

When Gawn doesn't dominate in the middle, we don't get anything from the one off the back of the square. We stopped doing it in the fourth and looked a little better with our ball movement.

ANB is a real problem. Too often goes to water when the pressure goes up but our game requires his input.

We're clearly struggling to cover Viney, Lever, Melksham and Hibberd. Fingers crossed the latter two come back next week.

The door is still open for us given North and Port's losses. We will finish next week in the 8 unless we lose by 100 and Geelong wins by 100. But if we lose and then need to beat GWS in the last game to make the finals, I do not like our chances at all.

great read titan.   agree with all you said.

next week or bust.

If I can quickly give my 'hindsight is 20 - 20 vision' take on today's game. As I was leaving the ground last week I turned to the bloke next to me and said that it was a flattering scoreline and some of the things we did would fall straight into the Swans hands. I said it after Petracca took a mark 30 - 40 out and, rather than take a set shot, put up a dinky kick to nowhere. So we went from playing against the most amateurish team in the comp to playing seasoned pros. In retrospect, Gold Coast was the worst team we could have played.

The biggest disappointment for me is Jones.  He continually fails in big games.  His pace, decision making and skills were all net negatives for us today and sadly not for the first time.  I've read somewhere on here that Vince was dropped because Sexton kicked 5 on him last week.  Three of those goals were kicked when he was opposed to Jones on the wing in the first half.  Hanneberry took Jones to the cleaners off the wing in the first half.  He has been a loyal servant and I greatly admire his contribution to the club but time is rapidly passing him by.

Catch it in another jumper, so we can get more class in thru our midfield.

We have to improve thru the midfield and corridor with smarter players and ball use.

We lack agility with Hoges deep, doesn't aid us much defensively, and doesn't Jump well at the ball.

As I said, Weide will be better for us deep, and TMC is very effective for us around half-forward.

We've got to get better at using the ball offensively thru the middle.

Hogan, whilst a good key-tall, is not OUR answer...   But can help us acquire what we lack.

  - - - - - - -

I have no hate for Hogan.    You people using the word 'hate' are ridiculous.

I like Hogan,,, as a person,,, and as a player.  This is why he has value.  Because he can play, makes him valuable.  Garlett can play as well, but isn't what we need him to be.

So we need to trade to get in the pieces of the puzzle that we require.

We do't have many players which we can afford to trade out, that would be wanted by other clubs.

Hoges is one, IMO.

Concur. Great servant and player but today ran around by himself and never GUT ran to cover the Sydney players. Ran around in middle by himself looking for cheap kicks.

you shouldn't be disappointed or surprised. some here including myself have known him to be average for years. his lack of defensive accountability is on show in close games against top sides. we should have traded him in 2016 when he was at his peak.

Headline from the 'Hun... "TIME TO PUT A LINE THROUGH DEES"

Hard to argue tbh.

Oue tag is "Pretenders".

Until we consistently beat top 8 teams, you cant complain about that description.

Sunday night after a loss is one of the worst feelings, especially when we did it to ourselves. Few changes needed after today, JKH and Hunt (through injury or omission) have got to go. Boy do we need Melksham and Hibbo.

I think we're more of a chance to beat the Eagles away than GWS at home, so we gotta turn it on next week.

I'm still filthy about that effort so rather than try for a coherent post here's my rants

1. Momentum. We can't control it. We're either playing like millionaires or we drop our bundle (as per the 2nd quarter).   This isn't a recent development, it's been an issue for seasons.  To me that comes down to on-field leadership. We don't have anyone on-field who can refocus the group.

2. Skills (specifically goal kicking).  We are a disgrace. Wasting the footy and leaving the door open for teams to stay in the fight. How do we call Hogan a forward yet he can't kick further than 40? Even TMac has got the yips! Call me old fashioned but these jerks are getting paid to kick goals, it shouldn't be that hard.

3. Not good enoughs. JKH, ANB, VDB, Hunt - not up to it.  You could argue Pedo falls into this category but we've always known he's a good ordinary footballer who can be counted on to play his part.   Six weeks ago I had Harmes in this bucket and his improvement has been remarkable.  Here's hoping the others show half that much upside.

4. Show ponies.  Trac & Hogan.  Trac does not do enough. And Hogan should stick to sulking and surfing.

5. Leadership. We have no on-field leaders.  There's no General rallying the players.

6. Not enough mongrel.  Yes, there's the Vineys, Brayshaws and Olivers who are born with it, but the rest, it can be intermittent.  They have to be savages 120 mins a week, 23 weeks a year.

Final word - I hate watching these cunches.  Supporting Melbourne isn't fun. They let you down every time.

On what has been a very emotional day I have to admit for the first time this club has hurt me to the core.

Started at 9 am volunteering for BCNA day and honouring 3 close family and friends lost to breast cancer. You hope your team will put in and give you a lift, but no they just don't have it. They don't have the right stuff.

Sydney were 2 rotations down from early on and played with resilience, toughness and structure. We butcher it and find yet another way to lose a game we should win. It is not the loss that guts me it is the way we lose. Clearly we have talent but we are not a team. Individuals do flashy stuff but we find a way to lose and have done so against every top 8 team this year and this is why we are not a top 8 team. Sydney were out on their feet in the last 20 minutes yet still held on while we kicked it out on the full, couldn't kick 30 metres and continually hit opposition targets when streaming forward (Nathan Jones I am calling you out here).

I know you shouldn't write when upset but gees this club is hard to support..............

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie
