*not merely as sexy as who we should target player wise.

It's easy to draw inferences on players skills sets, acumen and talent - harder to draw a line on coaches, particularly all the assistant ones from afar.

I stumbled across Brett Ratten leaving Hawthorn a few minutes ago - and thought to myself - that I've always rated him, as a person and as a coach, can't tell you why, just a sense... wouldn't mind getting him on board again at the Dee's.

But, in one - out another - and without character assassinating people/coaches I've never met - has anyone got a version of a champion data write up for our assistant coaches ;) - I hear from some Demonlanders that Troy Chaplin, shouldn't be retained etc etc...

Ratten did well with our midfield a number of years ago. Not sure he's had anything to do with a backline if your looking at removing Chaplin. Yze has worked his way up under Clarkson from part time goal kicking coach to defensive coach. Another option would be to poach Matthew Scarlett. Or perhaps myself.

Ratten was a great midfield coach for the Demons.

Wellman was a brilliant backline coach for the Demons, organised everything we currently struggle with doing:

- Don’t all go up for the punch

- someone stay near goalsquare

- backline hold back six structure rather than getting too high

- track the crumbing forwards around ballups & throwins in the forward line

He also did the same for Bombers under Hird.

Used to love watching & listening to him when he took the defensive group for training & drills. Was spewin' when he left.

Wellman was a massive loss - turned Frawley into an AA then after he left went back to being just a handy player

As a general rule clubs look to employ people that senior coaches have worked with previously, hence why we have Matt Egan as part of our set up and there was talk for a time that Scott ‘that traitorous so-and-so’ Thompson  may lob at the Dees

I would love Mitchell or Ratten but I’m expecting - like many - that the former will be at Hawks next year but I actually think the latter might head to Brisbane

I’m more interested in what we do re football manager if Mahoney was to leave

I wouldn't be putting any great amount of money on Mitchell to go back to Hawthorn. Don't be surprised if he comes to us and works with Goodwin. Would that it were truly so. How good would our midfield become with Mitchell's input.

Not sure where to put this article.  It is info only - not to remotely imply a need to target anyone.

16 of 18 coaches participated in survey.

Can't disagree with that rating.  Clarkson really worked us over earlier this year.  That is why I really hope they don't make or we don't meet them in the finals.

As an aside, I read today that Clarkson is waiting till end of year to progress his contract talks.  Would be very surprised if he leaves Hawks.

Mitchell has a very close relationship with Todd Viney & Jordan Lewis. I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up at Melbourne.

Interestingly at the airport Simpson was asked by media about the loss of mitchell to coaching team. He responded low key saying he was just finishing his first year - no big deal. My preference is for experience.  Rattan was brilliant and had the midfield firing when he was under daniher. When he left it was noticeable.

If I was Sam I would be going to another club then the hawks, he has all ready learnt enough from Alistair. If he goes  to the hawks maybe he takes over from Alistair, that would be a big mistake, the hardest thing in coaching any sport team is taking over from a master coach. Think of all the failed coaches at teams when they have taken charge after a super coach, after sir Alex Ferguson at man u fail, Mathew knights after Kevin seedy fail, Voss after Mathews fail,  why the rush to be head coach I think he should be a assistant for at least 5 years and coach a vfl side has well.

Rocket not a super coach no flags. Roos a good coach but 1 flag does not make a super coach. Scott at Geelong took over a great super side, anyone could have coached that side to a flag, no grand finals since, his not a fail but just ordinary, am talking about supersides who have won heaps of flags not non or 1 flag like roos and rocket, You are easy pleased to call rocket and roos as super coach, a bit like calling Robert Murphy  a great of the game, good players but great.
