But in my view, this hasn't been a personnel issue, it's been more a system issue.  We aren't not defending well enough through the middle of the ground, which then exposes individuals, as well as other parts of the ground.

Not just your view. Would have thought it was obvious to all and sundry, but there you go. Easier to go clamouring to bring in an untried player from the two's who has shown a bit to replace the untried player from the two's who had shown a bit.

Pretty sure the FD would realise that following Petty's debut.

Yes but they got away with it with Spargo even though he hadn't set the world on fire at Casey. It is hit or miss. I saw the game against Coburg and Petty did nothing all day and was then put in the seniors. My head is begining to spin with some of our selections.

Missed the saints game busy selling vinyl records but from reading this thread it seems we need a change to our game style in these next two games because we need to win them to restore some confidence or the last six games could crush us.

a lot of talk about the back six but if the opposition are running forward without any real pressure we are going to struggle so we have to quicken up both the forward and mid sixes.

forwards... for next two games TMac back and only two talls Hogan and Weed (or Frost or  TSmith ) and add both Spargo and Jeffy To Melksham and Fritsch

mids... Max and Jack are givens and I would with Oliver and Stretch on the wings and the other two inside the circle are difficult because none are quick but lets put Bernie in there in a run with role (if Fyffe is out then on Neale) and the last gig is Gus

back six...Nev OMac Hibbo and. Jones TMac Lewis

Bench... Harmes Salem

Team is ...

Jetta OMac Hibbo

Jones Tmac Lewis

Oliver Brayshaw Stretch

Melksham Weed Spargo

Garlett Hogan Fritsch

Gawn Viney Vince

I/c.. Harmes Salem JSmith ANB

IN Garlett Stretch Vince Spargo

OUT Petty Petracca Hannan Tyson

It's quite amazing, bing.  We've got everyone lamenting the fact we brought in an untried, first year player, only for this week to have more posters asking for... an untried, first year player.

Would it be fair to say he was better yesterday than previous weeks?

Maybe SF. His cameos probably totalled 7 or 8 minutes compared to the usual 5.

Apologies for the sarcasm but he has really gotten under my skin. He should be killing it but my wife’s 14 year old dachshund has more desperation for a tennis ball than Petracca has for a footy.

We had a lot more worse players than Petracca Petracca stays.

To me it's more about the restructuring.

The first area is that we need to fix is our forward entries - which way too often head to the goalsquare where we either are outmarked or fail to crumb. The situation has been made worse when we took out Spargo and didn't replace him with a fellow crumber - like Jeffy. We had success during our six-game win stretch with the three tall forwards, but I said at the time that it may not be sustainable at night and also in the winter when agility is almost everything. Having three talls is a luxury up in Darwin anyway, because it's at night it gets dewy/greasy - it's very different to Alice Springs. Clearly having another small helps our pace and mobility and forward pressure and maybe forces players to look lower. Telling players (namely Hoges) to lead up to the contest is also crucial.

The second area is our failure to cover opposition sides on the break. We no longer have Lever to intercept and save the fix a two-fold. 1) we need to make sure our mids aren't all downhill skiing - Viney and Jones definitely ain't ones, so the others need to lift as well and rotate quickly enough to maintain their ability to get back and pressure. More two-way runners are needed which to me means ANB needs to go in there at times and we need to add pace to our wings - Stretch is a must and Baker needs to be considered, even though I doubt his kicking ability at this stage. But Baker will certainly add run and the fans will love him.

2) We need to add more speed to our back line or play an extra down back (although we did do this on occasions against the Saints). The downside of the extra down back means you turn the game into a low-scoring close tussle, but it may be necessary if we can't get our mids right. And it might be necessary because whilst Jordy bring precision, he most certainly doesn't bring speedy defence.

In terms of players coming in, the following must be considered:

A crumber - Spargo is a given and there's a case for Jeffy as well, especially in Darwin. Kent will be ready again soon, but not yet based on his game in VFL last week.

More two-way runners, ideally with pace - Stretch is a given because of his VFL form, but there's a case for Baker, who is quicker, as well, although after what happened with Petty, I am not sure Goody will be so eager to trial that this week - once bitten, twice shy. There's also a case for Buggy because whilst he's not quick, he works his butt off and we may need him to tag/niggle in coming weeks. But with Fyfe out, do we really need Buggy to tag Neale this week? Maybe he has to wait for Toby the following week.

There's also a case for Frosty - some will argue Keilty but he's the same player as Petty - not mega quick, just more developed and more of a man. But you can't bring in Frosty unless the coach wants him and he has to be part of his restructure. Given it's going to be slippery in Darwin and Freo have lost Taberner and Nyhuis and Kersten are hardly big names, maybe it's the game to go small down back anyway. In which case you have to consider recalling Bernie, who is honest and will make a contest and is by and large a terrific kick. Or as I have stated before, we send Nat Jones back there to make our transition game more smooth and also because he's a hard nut and will put his life on the line. I'd have him play on Ballantyne with Jetta on Walters and Hibberd on Matera.

As to the outs, I have three certs.

1) Hannan - I still think he's critical come finals, but he may need a few weeks of dominating in the VFL again before a recall.

2) Tyson - unless we play him in the guts, then there's no point having him as that's his forte. he's not quick enough to be an outside mid.

3) Petty - I have made comment on another thread about this, but we don't want another Chris Lamb scenario - he needs to regain his confidence and the best place for that to happen will be in the VFL finals. We need to win this game.

The other outs - possibly

4) Petracca - I said last week that it was imperative that Goody shows him some tough love for his long-term development. Please bite the bullet with him Goody - if you don't we all lose as he is imperative as a weapon in the run home against the good sides. He needs to be playing in the middle for Casey for two weeks and working his butt off. The time to do it is now, not in Rd 21 when we are out of it.

5) Weid - I actually feel that with Petty out and with Frost unlikely to be recalled, we can rejig by sending T-Mac and Hoges back to help out for part of the game. That could leave Weid to play the outlet role down the line again but as I said earlier, three tall forwards is not an option at night against a quick young side. But my gut feel is we'll give Weid another go. He's ready. He just needs to show it.

6) Lewis - The big call if Goody has the courage to make it. Clearly he gets caught out on transition defensively and clearly we need his smarts and precise ball movement offensively. Can we keep playing him and if we ain't a chance to win the flag, how can we justify playing him?

So:

Forward 7 - Spargo, Weid, T-Mac/Hoges, Fritsch, Melky, Garlett, ANB

Mids 8 - Gawn, Oliver, Viney, Brayshaw, Harmes, Baker, Stretch, Jones

Defenders 7 - Lewis, O-Mac, J.Smith, Salem, Jetta, Hibberd, Hoges/T-Mac

Or, in simpler terms:

In: Stretch, Spargo, Baker and Garlett

Out: Petty, Hannan, Tyson and Petracca

I like it. Good effort.

But does goody have the class to admit the change is needed?

Posting on this topic hours after a demoralising loss is never a good idea but whatever:

In: Frost, Garlett, Spargo, Stretch

Out: Tyson, ANB, Hannan, Petty

Petty never should have played, so I don't buy the argument that he should get a second crack. Just accept we got it wrong and get him out. I don't like Frost and I doubt I ever will but that change just has to be made.

Tyson is adding nothing to the side, complete waste of a spot. Give Stretch a go on that wing. Another player I don't like but deserves a chance.

I'd then drop ANB and Hannan for Garlett and Spargo. Get some smaller, pacier forwards in. Let Hogan, TMac, Weideman and Fritsch contest in the air, and have Garlett and Spargo at their feet. But both Garlett and Spargo have to work their butts off defensively. Run, chase, tackle, pressure. We're not getting enough of any of that from ANB and Hannan and ANB in particular deserves to be dropped and to have the heat put on him.

More so Hannan he had 75% game time & only had 2 kicks & 2 handballs & one of them didn't go 2 our advantage. We can't carry him 4 the occasional x factor moment that certainly didn't come on Sat.

I say give Keilty a go over Petty. Dec is a mature age recruit who has been playing VFL for 4 years now and has been in good form. I don't think he would've looked anywhere near as lost as Petts did out there today.

Agree, he has been on a list for 2 years now and it’s worth giving him a chance to see how he goes.

I saw he was in the best again last weekend.

I would pick a team for the conditions. Stretch comes in as he is fit and a good runner. I wouldn’t debut a guy in Darwin as many are suggesting. Tyson should come out for Stretch and Petty out with Tom Mac going back. Hannan out for Garlett

His decision making should improve with more games at AFL level and he has the athleticism we so desperately need. Aside from getting caught under the ball at one stage I though his defensive positioning was quite good.

He couldn't quite execute the kicks or decisions needed but his athleticism stood out when the game opened up in the last quarter, he was running the ball and getting it forward.

Stick with him because he has some special tricks that we'll start to see if he gets confidence at the level.

In Spargo,Garlett,Vince,Frost,Baker and left field Keity or Dion J........... out Petty,ANB,Hannah,Tyson,Petracca and Jones or Lewis.

Garlett doesn't do much in the two's,but has class. Cannot afford Jones and Lewis in the same side both are sloppy and slow. Frosty is another revolving door player,we must find his niche position. Dion J needs his chance, also same for Keilty.

ANB won’t get dropped no matter how many times you type it

Genuine question: why?

How is he impacting games at the moment?

When was the last time he played well in a game we lost or didn't win by a massive margin?

When Jetta and OMac have bad days, as they did, our backline is a mess. OMac having too many bad days of late. If he doesn’t mark the ball, I panic. J Smith worth giving more game time. He will be worth it I believe (not much alternative any way). Petty nowhere near AFL level yet, and it showed. He may well get another go, but it will be his last for the season if he doesn’t lift his game. Frost the most likely to be selected if Petty goes. From reports he has played reasonably well in the 2’s. He has always been a heart in your mouth player, but again, not much alternative to him.

ANB and Tyson make too many basic skill errors to be left in the side. Lewis makes errors as well but he gets so much more of the ball than ANB and Tyson, due to good positioning, and more often than not hits his mark. He should stay, the other 2 need to go and improve their skills elsewhere. While I have never been a great fan, Stretch has earned is way back into the team, and I think Spargo needs to return. While not a high disposal player, he, like Fritsch, makes the most of each and every one of them.

As a last change, I’d like to see Hannan get a spell in the 2’s. His output has been no where near what we require up forward. Given our 3 talls, I’d go with Garlett to replace him.

But the biggest changes have got to be a smarter game plan going into F50, and considerably better disposal from 90% of our players. It’s these 2 areas that allow opposition teams such easy access into their forward line.

We can all but hope.

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
