Good idea.

He has the knowledge of 280 games with Clarko to use.

Couldn’t agree more.

When May and Lever are back put Frost on a wing. Tall, can run and kick long into the forward 50.

When I saw Lewis and Jones line up on the wings for the first bounce I almost spewed.  Two slowest players in the true ‘outside mid’ positions.  Do not offer enough defensive capability from there, and certainly offer little offensively.  The barrel must be almost at empty if this is where we are at.

i hoped his leadership would add some value, but hard to lead when you can’t lead by example....

That is what is so worrying.

Having 2 slow, over 30's on the wings in a 6-6-6 scenario is suicide.

Saints had 6 players under 20 games and guess what, they are well drilled, know what to do and where to go and have pace and skill.

Lewis has one thing going for him, his leadership. I thought we would bring him back  to help organize the backline, which is made up of mostly young inexperienced players and out of form players.

Instead we bring him to play on the wing. He who can barely run, can no longer kick, refuses to tackle or run defensively.

He is underdone and they played him on the wing. I have no words for the stupidity.

He needs to retire but until that time he needs to play in a position where he can influence without hurting us with his lack of pace. The wing is NOT his position.

He's not going to add anything to the side playing on a wing. It's the backline, and with a rocket up him to put his body on the line, or it's VFL.

If I were Simon Goodwin/Josh Mahoney/Gary Pert or Glenn Bartlett it would be clean out your locker on Monday, thanks for the 2 years and good luck in the media.

Bruise free, treacle slow, mentally soft and physically weak players don't get to go around talking up their leadership and importance, not if I had anything to say about it.

Does he actually do this?

Suggest you ring the club, because they haven't worked it out.

It is actually funny that you pay these guys a sh-tload of money for their expertise and they can't see what the rest of the footy world does.

What do we do with him?

Saw him warming up with the midfield group pre game and thought maybe he will play in the middle in spurts. Then I saw him head to the wing and instantly thought he might line up closer to the defensive 50 so he can be the spare in defence after the bounce which is probably his most suitable role but no, he stayed on the wing and was on Newnes early from memory. As mind blowing as seeing Hibbo go to Membrey at the opening bounce.

Lewis came to the Club a greatly respected player. I, now sense he is losing that respect and the players are not listening to him as they should because his performances have slid. A smart Club would have altered his final year contract from player to assistant coach. It really was a no brainer.

Yep, saw a player in the last Q totally disregard a lead out the back from him.

Looked at him and said to himself no cheap kick for you sunshine.

Went back and had his kick to position...

Look, it is really sad how we have handled Lewis, he is or was a great get for the Club with the experience and knowledge he brought. And it is also sad that another ex Hawk, legend this time, Brereton  just casually turned up at St Kilda to coach their forwards. How did we miss that opportunity.

I think newly appointed coaches grow and learn on the job.  Bux, Hardwick, Richo???

But the decision to put 1.5 old slow players on the wing of a big ground, when our speed has been questioned (smart posters questioned this 3 years ago), was absolutely mind-boggling.

He is picking and placing on reputation rather than current capacity.

Then when the penny dropped he hides Lewis on the bench for the first 8-9 minutes of at least 2 quarters.  But he puts Fritch on the wing.  Treacle gets replaced by grace.  Goodwin wants slow perfection into our I50.  When a team ain’t perfect (at least 6 short easy 20 metre passes missed their target) GIVE ME bloody CHAOS.

The wings need blitzkreig chaos. Hibbo and Frost should have been tried when we needed the Hail Mary at 3/4 time.

Pathetic coaching by Goodwin.  He will learn, but the signs have been there.  Not reviewing the PF when it was a clear sign of what we band-aided, and what was to come?  Finals wins against Geelong and Hawthorn were against relatively slow back-half to front-half teams.  Saints beat us last year, who were THE fastest back-half to front-half team in the comp in 2018.

Maths doesn’t lie.

I said when we recruited Lewis, “he will make a slow team slower”.  He has, unquestionably.

I can’t think of a worse recruiting decision by a club in my memory.

It is laughable!  Just as laughable as when Goodwin played with no wingmen vs Hawks last year.

And he had Jones play as a tagger on Mitchell in that Hawks game, just as he had him tag Billings in the first half yesterday.  Jones is not a tagger, is not a wingman and is not a leader.

Let's get to the bye then play the kids.  Can't be any worse than playing retirees-to-be and VFL level players.

And on the MCG of all grounds!

No wonder we can only play well on smaller ovals.

Summary?

Basically he’s playing for his Superannuation

And he’s been more of a negative than positive in his time at Melbourne

That he’s doing his legacy damage by not retiring

The season is dead, give him a token assistant coach position until the end of the year and work on the future.

Our season is dead now...  not because of the ladder [position,  but because our gamestyle is cooked.  And what we lack to suit  '666'.

Put more kids into the team now...  and keep Lewis in,  to guide them.  No point becoming the new  "9thMond".

Make Lewis a decent offer to be an assistant from this mid season...  and stay playing til end of season.  Next season a VFL playing assistant coach to guide new kids coming in.

Keep Brendan McCartney as Player Coach-Performance Manager,  to oversee and to modify our development programs.

Pull the other slower legs out of the team now.  And look to trade out at seasons end.   Hit the draft up,  for skilled running Kids with Attitude.

Keep our better leaders in,  to set the tone for the new Kids.

Classic in-between'rs can go.

..................................................

Possible trade outs:

Hibbo 29+Yrs already,  He may want to go home ?

Garlett

Frost

Hunt

etc.

SO you want leg speed but your potential trades include 3 guys with genuine leg speed. I’m confused.

He can guide them in giving away petulant free kicks behind play.

Not just Jones and Lewis on the wing yesterday, but we had Tyson out there most of last year. It’s one of the main reasons I am struggling with Goodwin. It’s so obvious it’s an issue but we have seen no attempt to fix it.

So let us see for wednesday night. Can the selectors drop him ?????? I don't think so.?

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
