Can't agree with that RJay (although I detect underlying sarcasm)

Bernie's (quite legal) shirtfront on Daisy is something to behold and something you'd never see our Dom do.

Hogan, Look closer please

Hogan underrated by most, or they just don’t see, he was involved in many of the goals, he’s a gun.......

Agreed he played a better than serviceable game today, but I wish he would stop playing for free kicks. Just suck it up princess and beat them next time, it's one flaw in his game that makes me cringe.

Just having a bit of a go at 'joeboy' 'small'...

He needs new a whipping boy.

Max Gawn

What did he do to cause the 50 metre penalty? Watched it several times on replay and I am none the wiser. What did I miss?

Umpire trying to even up the qtr time score!

Watching replay and reckon Hogan handpassed and passed to goalkickers at least 8 times, he played beautifully

He has been much improved with this and his body language this season, however, on 2 occasions he went back to his old ways.

The first was when he didn't get the free kick and stopped playing to complain to the umpires. It was a clear free kick but you have to play to the whistle.

The second was when Simpson was 1 on 2 or 1 on 3 and Hogan went to ground way too easily.

Hard to fault any players performance on a day like this. Very satisfying win.

Haven't seen it but on the radio broadcast (SEN) they thought the umpire had believed Gawn had stepped over the mark. The commentators talked about how Gawn took a couple of steps back and then came forward the same number of steps when McKay took the kick. However, they didn't confirm whether Gawn actually stepped over the mark or not.

PS: The SEN early Sunday game commentary team is not bad. Gerard Whately and Peter Donegan calling the action with Adam Cooney adding interesting comments from the boundary. They also have Danny Frawley but I don't see that he adds much value. My favourite Frawley-ism of the day was when he claimed during the game that all the Melbourne  forwards had kicked at least one goal. At that time Hogan, Smith and Spargo hadn't.

he didn't step forward, but he did jump forward just as mckay kicked. was about a foot or so. there is one video sequence (side on) that clearly shows this.

if he hadn't gone over mckay would still have kicked into him but

I actually think the 50 worked in our favour as it triggered a scuflle. And we came out at the start of tbe 2nd Q fired up.

I still think he was within the actual mark..his action made it look otherwise perhaps...ie.he moved forward....but for me it was from behind the mark.

All moot now.

Max was right . Umpire wrong.

McKay judged to kick where Max stood...NOT allowing where the mark was.

Max a little clever was denied by umpire error.

Add to the revelations this year that he is one of the best field kicks in the side.

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.

The Demons simply did not take their opportunities when they presented themselves and ultimately when down by 25 points effectively ending their finals chances. Goal kicking practice during the Bye?
