I'm nor sure that it could be garnered that Lyon was actually questioning the selection from those quotes.

So if he's ready, we're a professional club?  With 3 wins on the trot I highly doubt we feel the need to 'rush him back' into the side.  He played most of the VFL game on the weekend and clearly got through unscathed, so to me that says he will be ready to play AFL footy on the weekend.

Take a quote out of context and look what happens..

It was Tim who was questioning whether or not we’ll play him. Gary was simply saying they’ll pick him when his ready.

Wow. What a news grab.

Given his importance to the team and the history of his injury, I would err on the side of caution.

It could be said that the club has been cautious by delaying his return for as long as it has, but it would surely give both the player and also all those involved in his rehab, more confidence if he was eased back with a few more games at Casey.

Viney's importance to the Club cannot be measured by one game or a handful of games, but the next 5-10 years.

perfect way to ease him in:

  • Casey last week
  • Carlton this Sunday
  • Proper AFL team the week after   :-)

If he played at Casey this week, he'll as least be playing against some AFL standard players...

Scrap that - just looked at the VFL fixture and saw who we are playing.  Perhaps we can organise a game for him in the EDFL to give him one last (in comparison) decent hit out before an AFL return?

He's in ... end of story if there ever was one.

The only way he misses if his body readings or whatever they use to measure fitness etc were out of kilter after the VFL game and that is low.

Not sure we can expect him to tear it up first game back though. Tag or no tag he was only reasonable last week at Casey but what else do we expect after 9 months or so out of the game.

Didn’t hear the exact quote.

But if Gary questions the selectors’ judgement, maybe we could question his selection of our ante penultimate coach.

Well if you have watched Viney play he goes at it at 100 miles an hour as the saying goes. He played 4 quarters and came through unscathed that said, if  he plays again for Casey he will be at it at 100 miles an hour. He is a competitive  Beast.

Take the chains off and let him loose.  The co skipper is ready to go.

Correct.

Lyon wasn't questioning the selection at all.  He said if he's ready he'll be selected and if he's not he won't be.

He said if he plays he's obviously ready.

It's a non story.

Something tells me if he played VFL this week again, we'd be without him for at least 3-4 more weeks due to suspension.  They've kept him back from games for a few weeks already.  A good run around in VFL.  No chance Viney would have wanted to have a 2nd in the VFL.

Agree with Garry..... for once.   9 months out of game, not sure why you'd rush him back -  build games time and confidence in 2's

Please explain how he is being 'rushed back'? This could be an infinite problem as in essence every week is potentially one week too early and can be seen as rushed back. Trust the medico's decision making.

You agree with Garry even though Garry doesn't think he's being rushed.

Genius.

Is he right or wrong?

From 58:55

I understand why he might question the selection, as last year we came unstuck X 2...

As long as they are conservative, (don't you hate that word),,, with his amount of time per Qtr...  that's the main thing, IMO.

Wwe need him in.  But I only want him going about at 85% to 90% intensity, tomorrow!

It's the following game I want him Fully-Fit for, and he can go at 95% intensity, in that game against the Crows.  Easing into full match fitness by half-season.

I don't think so.

Viney plays.

He played in the 2’s last week.

It needs to be stated that Lyon IS NOT questioning the decision.

If you listen to the bloody audio all will be revealed.

I would expect Viney plays AFL at 100% intensity while he is on the ground with his minutes managed as he regains AFL match fitness. Playing v Carlton will help sharpen him up in terms of reacclimatising to the pace/intensity.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
