It did not warrant a free kick, the rule is if you don't make contact with ball, not if you don't attempt to mark it. It's normally a poorly adjudicated part of the game but this was the correct decision. "He had a chance early in the game to impose himself when Hannan skied the ball. He needed to launch at it and mark it in his hands. He tried to mark it on his chest and this allowed Webster to run back and spoil without giving away a free kick for not looking at the ball. Great spoil but an easy free kick to draw for a marking player". Thanks for the explanation. I did look it up though and actually there is no rule. Another AFL interpretation. The only front on rule concerns a player bending down to pick up the ball.. The rules say nothing at all about the situation above. I also remember a situation with Jack Watts playing against Port in the NT. Last line of defence, Watts ran front on to the player and punched the ball, then collided with the Port player. Free to Port for front on contact. Edited May 7, 2018 by jnrmac Quote
chook fowler 19,772 Posted May 7, 2018 Posted May 7, 2018 It was mentioned On the Couch that we are the number 1 in the competition for winning the contested ball - and that is without Viney. This means that possibly Salem will play more outside as a distributor when he comes back. Clarrie, Viney and Gus on the inside, augmented by Trac, Hoges and TMac makes a powerful unit and Melksham along with the newbies Spargo and Fritsch who are good ball users will be the beneficiaries of this dominance. Could be a special time ahead. 5 1 2 Quote

SFebes 4,884 Posted May 7, 2018 Posted May 7, 2018 Has the fab 5 ever played a game altogether? Can’t think of too many. Viney, Oliver, Brayshaw, Salem, Petracca? thats a mouthwatering midfield right there. I think Petracca needs more midfield time to build his tank but I’m sure the club is well over it. 1 Quote

Everyone talks about the comp being ridiculously even... But we have smashed some sides that looked appalling this year. Then got run ragged by some top sides. I still feel we're a ways off. That 4 quarter effort you talk about, that's all well and good, but it needs to become something you see more games than not. And so far this year, it's been rare. I can relate to that Dappa. Good teams are that way through repeat efforts. We need more evidence for sure 1 Quote

The only downer is letting late goals in when game over. 3 for Bombers and 2 for Saints. This will be a close season and every little bit of percentage required. Maybe nit-picking but must go hard till final siren. Next 2 games very important for us. I agree with the late bleeding. The annoying part is the last 2 to 3 minutes of some quarters there's just the occasional major blunder / skill error where we fail to hit an open target, handball straight to an opponent in corridor etc just when we looked like putting the game beyond reach and smacking the opposition. Probably just a reflection of where we are at really. Going well against ordinary opposition but not able to smash them just yet. We have come a fair way from a few years ago though where we were normally discussing how we could be smashed so badly by ordinary teams like the Saints. 1 Quote

I’m not sure if this has anything to do with it but as we get to most games early we notice Trac during the warm-up miss a lot of shots at goal. Most of his practice consists of bad angle and snap shots. One of the Fox Footy shows last night made a mention that Breust has the same pre-game routine. 30 metres out and directly in front when practising his goal kicking, keeping it simple. 3 Quote
DeeZone 10,590 Posted May 8, 2018 Posted May 8, 2018 Loved the game and we have certainly improved our kicking-in this year, some of the long kicks to a player floating out back were great to watch and set up quick goals, i thought overall kicking for goal was pretty poor from both sides. we had some bad luck as well as we were flowing forward a poor handball or kick into the man cost us a number of scoring opportunities and handed the saints a lot of scoring involvements and we continually gift sides "Junk Time" goals. However that all aside I was able to watch and enjoy the majority of the last two weeks games. We have a really top group here and if they come on as we all expect, we have a lot to look forward to. Go Dee's........................!!!!!!!!!! 3 Quote

Martins playing credentials were better than HWSNBN. Unfortunately Martins life was a little 'Dusty' some say and many clubs , Mfc included , gave him a wide berth. Sorry We need to get over this one, as both the GWS player and JT were clearly rated ahead of Dusty by every club. Port even offered us 2 picks under 10 for JT and we refused. Kelly in reverse. But back to Dusty, he was offered to all clubs by his manager about 3 years ago and the Tigers were prepared to deal, but not one club stepped up. That is after he had played about 5 years with the Tigers and had been seen by every club. So how can you go back and criticise his not being taken as an untried 18 year old, in front of the 2 highest ranked players in the draft? The two I can't get over and I know we need to move on, are Jimmy instead of Ollie and Lucas Cook instead of anyone else. Edited May 8, 2018 by Redleg 2 1 Quote

Well you were at odds with nearly every club at that time. BTW, until being screwed by the club, by being made captain at 21 of a shambles of a side and then copping a few foot injuries, JT was a good player for us who looked headed to playing 200 games with us. 2 Quote
